Description

P. L. E. DEL FUNGO-GIERA.
GUN moum.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.2B, I916.
1,290,830. Patented Jan. 7,1919.
" ATTORNEY with top to screw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIPPO L. E. DEL FUNGO-GIERA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Application filed August 28, 1916. Serial No. 117,197.
7 '0 all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, PHILIPPO L. E. on FUNoo-GInRA, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gun-Mount, of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description.
My invention relates to gun mounts, utilizing a ball and a socket joint whereby the gun may be adjusted or swung in any direction desired and whereby the gun may be held in either a horizontal plane in any Specification of Letters latent.
adjustment, or in a vertical plane in any adjustment.
My invention is fully described in the fol lowing specification, of Which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view showing a ball on to the gun;
Fig. 2 1s a cross-section showing the ball in its socket and method of. securing the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross section showing the method of holding the ball so as to cause the same to act vertically or horizontally;
Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the holding ring showing a clearance cut therein.
Referring to' the drawings, 1 represents the ball seated in body 2 conforming thereto, said ball being held in place by means of a detachable ring 3 secured to the body 2 by means of screws 4, or the equivalent.
Passing upwardly through the bottom of the body 2 is a threaded bolt 5 supporting a head 6 of anti-friction material at the inner end thereof and a pad of felt 7 interposed between said head and the ball 1. The ball has on its rear side or next to the operator a slot 8 arranged vertically and a slot 9 arranged horizontally, and the body 2 carries a plunger 10 normally forced inwardly by merns of a spring 11 to engage either slot in said ball when permitted to do so, said plunger 10 being provided with an oil'set, or pin 12 adapted to enter a suitable recess to hold the plunger out of engagement with the ball 1, or if desired, to hold the same in engagement with the same. The axis of the plunger is indicated as substantially horizontal and parallel to the axis of the 'gun in normal ormid horizontal position. and in order to make the device most Patented Jan. 7, 191 9.
efl'ective for the purposes set forth herein the plunger should be square or rectangular in cross section where it fits into either of the grooves, whereby rotation of the ball around the axis of the plunger is prevented.
When an operator desires to maintain the gun in a horizontal plane, and yet provide for lateral deflection, he permits the plunger 10 to enter the groove 9, and when he desires to elevate the gun, after he has carried the vertical groove 8 into position whereby the plunger 10 may enter the same, he may elevate the gun to any degree without horizontal adjustment.
The body 2 carries'a ring 3, as heretofore stated, to embrace the ball 1, and said' ring is provided with a recess 13, as heretofore stated, which is adapted to receive the neck 14 of the gun mount proper arranged upon the ball 1 whereby the degree of elevation is increased.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A gun mount comprising a support having a hemispherical recess therein, a ball held in said recess and having a groove lying in a horizontal plane when the ball is in normal position, a member carried by said ball adapted to receive a gun and having an axis perpendicular to said plane, and coacting means between for maintaining the ball with said groove in the horizontal plane while permitting the desired rotary movement around the axis of said member. 2. A gun mount comprising a support having a hemispherical recess therein, a ball seated in said recess and having vertical and transverse grooves, a bolt threaded in said support and the ballv said support and provided with exterior manually operative means, a felt covered.
member actuated by the inner end of said bolt adapted to bear against said ball to operate as a shoe to lock the ball in desired relationship with said support, and a radial plunger cooperating with' either of said grooves in alternation and serving to perm1t rotation of the ball around an axis per-
