Description
Sept. 9, 1930. E. w. HEDLUND ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT I Filed Aug. 2. 1926 Figlf Irfiverwtor'f Erik W. Hecllunci,
H is Attorney Patented Sept. 9,
UNITED STATES nmxw. HEDLUND, onLYNN, ivrAsseo nu tud AS IG Q o COMPANY, AooRroRA'rIoN,ortmnwmoax p Application filed August a, 19st; "seiiai "nausea My invention relates to an adjustable holder, or support. In particular, the invention relates to a support especially adaptedjfor holding a light source subject to being adjusted, for example, with respect to a reflector or to its focal point. p
Theinvention is hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig.1 is a view in sectionand inelevation of a light projector equipped with my invention; Figs. 2,
' and 4 show the invention in detail- Referring to Fig. l of the drawing, it will be seen that the projector is provided with a casing 2, within which is mounted the usual reflector 3- and light source 4. The light source is held by the socket 5, which is suitably secured to the arm 6. This arm is secured to one end of a shaft 7, which latter passes through a ball 8 which is in the form of a resilient ring, which is held in a socket formed by the bearing elements 9 and 10, Fig; 2. It
will be observed that the ball is out completely through on one side, the cut 11 being shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Furthermore, the ball is partly cut throughat two different places.-
These cuts 12 and 13 are shown in Fig. 4. It will be seen, by referring to the drawing, that the ball is hollow. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 7 passes through the hollow center of the ball and the ball is held in position by the spring 14. The device is provided With a looking bolt 15 provided with threads 16which extend part way along the stem of the bolt and which are in threaded engagement with the yoke 17 of the ball and socket frame, the latter comprising the yoke 17 and the U-shaped member 18. The yoke 17 is provided with a recess within the collar 19 for receiving one end of thespring 14. It will be seen, by referring to Figs. 1 and 2,'that the ball 8 may be clamped in position by means of, the bolt 15 inasmuch as thebolt is provided with a stem 20, which extends through the spring 14, and which is adapted to engage the ball 8. Inasmuch as the ball 8 is slotted, it may be tightened about the rod 7 andagainst the socket elements 9 and 10. The object of the spring 14, Fig. 2, is to prevent the ball 8 leaving its 7 seat in the bearing 9 when the bolt 15 is withdrawn from engagement with the ball. Otherwise the ballwould fall through the lower opening in the frame, which opening is larger than the ball, to permit the ball being inserted in place as shown. While thus disengaged fromthe ball, any movement of the boltdoes not affect the tension of the spring 14. The latter therefore is independent of the bolt.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the U-shaped member 18 is secured to the yoke 17 byany suitable means, such as machine screws 21. The yoke, furthermore, may be-secured to the casing 2 in any suitable manner, as for example, by means of screws, for which purpose the holes 22 are provided.
Obviously therefore, with my invention the lamp 4 may be adjusted to any position desired inasmuch as the ball can be rotated in any direction in its bearing, and inasmuch as the shaft 7 can beraised and lowered through the ball itself.
It will be understood that While I have elected to describe my invention in connection with the specific construction shown in the drawings, I do'not Wish to be limited'to any specific construction inasmuch as, in View of er than said element and said bearing being smaller than the said element whereby the latter may be lifted in said cavity from its bearing along one axis against the force of said resilient' means and thereafter removed from said cavity along a different axis, and means independent of said resilient means for lock-- ing said element in an adjusted position.
2. In an adjustable device, a frame, a cavity in said frame, an adjustable supporting element and a bearing therefor, both being located in said cavity, resilient means in said cavity interposed and compressed between said element and said frame for maintaining said element in its bearing whereby said element may be adjusted, means for locking said element in its adjusted position, said resilient means being independent of said locking means whereby the tension of the resilient means is not affected by the locking means While the supporting element is unlocked.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this th day of July, 1926.
ERIK W HEDLUND.
