To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SEYMER E. `MAYABB, a citizen ofthe United States residing at Nebraska City, in the countyl of Otoe and State of Nebraska, have invented certain newv and useful Improvements in Music- Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to music leaf turners, and more particularly to a mechanically operated device for turning the leaves of sheet music during the execution of a composition on a musical instrument.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a manually operated mechanism embodying a music leaf support and associated with the piano or other musical instrument in a manner that will permit the player to turn the leaves of' music with a very slight pressure on an operating lever provided for the purpose, and'in convenient reach of the player. a
yA further object of the. invention is toprovide a device of this character having means for manually operatingthe same, disposed in close proximity to the keys of the piano, whereby the player may reach and press the operating finger in a minimum space ofV time thus causing practically no interference with the proper execution of the musical composition.
The invention has forr another object to combine a support for the sheets. of music with a suitable retaining case having operating mechanism mounted therein, so that an unsightly mechanical structure willv be hidden from view; the parts being so associated as to permit them to be easily mounted upon and disengaged from the front of` the musical instrument.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the preferred embodiment and in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which;

Disposed in the. front ofthe panel 3 isfa pair of operating rods 10,- andiV these are disposed substantially vertically on-the vface of the panel and their upper ends Vare j ournaled in a bearingll carried at the ,top edge ofthe panel 3. Above the bearing 11, the rods 10 are bent at right `angles to provide the turning arms 12, the terminals of which carry suitable clips 13, engageable with the upper marginal edges of the sheets of music. The clips 13 are slidably mounted upon the turning arm 12 to permit the clips to slide when the pages are swung, thereby preventing tearing of the pages or leaves from the binding.
Each rod 10 projects downwardly through a suitable yopening in the shelf and is rotatably mounted in a bearing 14, within thecasing 1. Each rod 10 carries a rack gear, one of which is designated at 15, and the otherat 16, in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Rotatably mounted in suitable bearings carried by theV ends of the casing is a shaft 17, theV upper end of which carries a gear wheel 18 engageable with the teeth 19 formed on'a double rack bar 20. This rack bar is slidably mounted in the guide 21, the terminals of which receive the shaft 17. The double Y rack gear 16 has, therefore,
rack bar 20 is formed by bifurcating a portionof its length and providing the teeth 19 on one outer edge and also forming teeth 22 on the inner edge of one of the legs lformed b-y the bifurcated, portion.` The teeth 19 are engageable with both the gear wheel 18, and the rack gear 15, while the teeth 22 are engageable with the rack gear 16.
f In the lower end of the casing is a bracket 23 for bracing the lower end of the shaft 17, and for receiving a stud shaft 24, projecting outwardly from the front of the casing and having a crank 25 mounted thereon. The inner end Iof the stud shaft 24 extends through the bracket 23 and carries a bevel gear 26 meshing with a bevel pinion 27 carried by the shaft 17. The end of the crank 25 yis provided with an operating nger 28 upon which the player may press when he desires to actuate the operating mechanism.
'It will be noted, by referring to Fig. of`
the drawing, that a rotary movement 1mparted to the gear 1S will reciprocate the rack bar 20. In this figure, the mechanism is shown as in the position it will assume after one -of the'turning arms 12 has been swung over to turn one of the leaves of music. For 'this reason, the rack gear 15 is shown in the position after completing the operation for turning the linger 12. The just begun its engagement with the teeth 22, and a continued pressure on the operating Enger will cause the rack bar to move farther toward the right to turn the rack gear 16, thus rotating the corresponding rod 10.

it to be understood, however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A music leaf turner comprising a plurality of operating rods, a gear attached to each rod, a guide member supporting the gears, a rack bar formed of a bifurcated member providing parallel legs, each having one edge provided with teeth in mesh with one of the said gears, the teeth on one leg terminating at a point directly opposite a point on the other leg where the teeth thereon begin so that one of the said gears will be out of mesh when the other gear is moving into mesh.
2. A music leaf turner comprising a casing, a plurality of rods extending into the casing, rack gears mounted upon the ends of the rods within the casing and disposed in the same plane, a guide member supporting 'the said rack gears, a double rack bar disposed in the same plane as the said rack gears yand including a bifurcated portion forming a pair of legs one having teeth on its inner edge and thc other having teeth on its outer edge, each set of teeth being engageable with one of the said rack gears when the double rack bar is actuated, and a gear wheel engage'able with the said teeth on'the outer edge of one of the said legs, and means for manually actuating the said gear wheel. 2 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
