a citizen of the United States, residing at. the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certainv new and useful Improvements in Guards for Rotary Fans and the clear,

My invention relates to guards for rotary fans and the like. An ob1ect of my invention is to provide a guard which will be light and of simple construction and convenient to assemble and will be strong and durable and able to withstand the rough usage to which guards are subjected. 'Another object isconvenience in attaching aname or cover plate to give a finished appearance to the structure'.- Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear from the following description.
' In accordance with my invention, I secure the radlatin w1re spokes of such a guard to a centre. attaching late which affords a support for the spo es at two points, the outer support being designed-to clamp a considerable length of the spoke and the inner support being a perforation engaged b the inner 'end of the spoke, which pre erably passes through the per foration and has a substantial length bent back against the face of the plate. An extremely rigid structure is thereby obtained. The outer clamp may conveniently be an integral ear of substantial length perforated near its inner end for the reception of the spoke and bent down upon the spoke.

My improvedguard is preferably -composed of wire and comprises a number of radial spoke members which'are suitably secured at their outer ends and are secured ing plate which provides a two-point bear- .ing for the spokes, one a clamp which em-.
braces and extends along the spoke for some distance, and the other aperforation through which the spoke passes. In' the specific illustrated embodiment of my guard, eight radiating wirespoke members 4 are provided of any usual or suitable shape, the outer ends of which are bent at an angle so that thelcomponent members together at their inner endsby an attach-- together form a cage or protective device of usual shape. The outer ends of the spoke members 4 are secured in any suitable way to a connecting ring 5, which is attached to the motor casing 1 by supporting arms 6.
Also at the front of the guard near its periphery the spokes 4 are coiled around an intermediate stifi'ening ring 7 which also serves to properly space the spokes. T01 this end the intermediate ring 7 is provided with a bend 8 (see Fig. 3) for each spoke, "and the spokes encircle the intermediate ring at these bends 8 and are thereby prevented from traveling around the ring, and are hence kept properly spaced.
At their inner ends the spokes are secured by an attaching plate 9 which provides two points of attachment for each spoke. The outer attachment comprises a perforated, flexible clamping car 10, of which there are eight provided about the periphery of the attaching disk 9 properly spaced for the reception of the spokes, and which initially extend rearwardly at right angles to the plane of the attaching disk 9. Radially inward :from these'ears 10, the disk 9 is provided with a corresponding number of spoke-receiving holes or perforations 11, and the wire spokes are passed through the perforations in the ears 10 and their inner ends are then 4O joining the outer ends 'of the spoke members, and an attachin plate for the inner ends of passed outwardly through the perforations 11 and then bent down along the'front of the attachlng disk 9, as shown in Fig. 2..
The clamping ears are: bent down upon the wire spokes, .4 and are of sufiicient length to extend a substantial distance along the spokes. A two-point bearing is thus provided for the inner end of each spoke memher, and the ears 10, by reasonzof their length, constitute extremely eflicient clamps and lend great rigidity to the structure. The guard is thus made strong and durable, while the simplicity of the attaching means renders the device very easy to assemble.
