Description

I H. 1. STUART. HOSE SUPPORTER BUTTON.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 25,1916- Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
UNITED STATES; PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J'. STUART, OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT N. BASSETT COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF SHELTON, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
HOSE-SUPPORTER BUTTON.
Patented Jan. '7, 1919.
Application filed April 25, 1916. Serial No. 93,438. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, haveinvented acertain new and useful Improvement in Hose-Supporter Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to loop and button clasps of the style which employ a button having slotted base plate threaded w th tape and its principal object is to provide a button of this character in which the tape is secured to that portion of the base plate between the slots whereby the front of the base plate has its body portion concealed and either the front or back of the base plate, or
both, is covered with tape; Another object of my invention is to provide a novel means for securing both extremities of a folded or double-ply tape to the base plate after the tape has been passed over a supporting member on the clasp. a
I attain these and other objects of my invention in the device set forth in the following description and accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of a button clasp to which my invention is applied;
Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section taken on line mw in Fig. 1 but showing the button loop swung forwardly out of engagement with the. button;
Fig. 3, detail views of parts ofthe button;-
Figs. 4:, 5 and 6, detail views showing the manner in which the tape isthreaded, and
Figs. 7 to 9, detail views of modifications.
The button clasp generally consists of an attaching link A,- a button loop B and a button tape 0 which carries a button D at its lower extremity. The button loop B, which is connected to the lower side of the attaching link A by a lip E projecting from the upper side thereof, is provided with a bridge F and has the sides of its lower extremity contracted to engage the shank of the button D. With the exception of the button D and the manner of attaching the same to the tape C the device thus far described is one of the common forms of button clasps well known in the art and is merely disclosed herein for the purpose of showing how my invention is applied. The button D consists of a slotted sheet metal base 2.
Projecting outwardly and riveted to the base 2 is a wire stud 3. The stud 3 is headed to form a convex head 4, which is preferably.
provided .with a downwardly pro ecting pe ripheral biting edge 5. The elastic rubber cap or collet 6 is shapedto form a head 7 {and a shank 8. The collet 6 is provided with a central aperture 9 having an inside cylindrical wall 10 flared outwardly at its upper extremity. The diameter of the wall 10 is less than that of the head 4 and preferably less than that of the shank of the stud 8. The base 2 of the button is provided with elongated openings 11 and 12. The tape C is slit adjacent to one of its extremities 13 to form an aperture 14. In assembling the parts the extremity 13 of the tape is threaded rearwardly and forwardly through the slots 11 and 12 in the base. Thetapeis then folded over so that the stud 3 passes through the aperture 14 as shown in Fig. 4; The end 15 of the tape is then passed forwardly through the link A and reanwardly through the loop B and then threaded through the slot 11 as shown in Fig. 5. The end 15 is then passed forwardly through the slot '12 in back of the extremity 13 as shown in Fig. 6. Then the tape is drawn taut and the collet slip dover the stud which passes through the aperture 9 therein, filling the space between the under side of the head of the stud and the front face of the base, and
securely holds the apertured extremity of the tape, against the base as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this manner both extremities of the tape are secured to the button after it has been folded around its supporting memberion the clasp, thereby eliminating the employment of any outside fastening means,
both to the supporting member of the clasp and the button, by hand. It should be observed that the apertured extremity of the tape is anchored to the stud during the process of manipulating the opposite end, thereby making the threading of both ends practicable. It should be further observed that in threading the base in the manner above described its entire front and back faces are lined with tape and that the button is finally assembled after the threading operation is completed.
In the modification shown in Fig. 7 I utilize the so called three -slotbase. The tape is first passed over its supporting member on the clasp and its two extremities brought together. These extremities are then threaded simultaneously through the three slots, as shown, and the stud then passed through the aperture in the tape.
My invention, however, is not confined to a double ply tape since I may utilize a single ply tape, a particular instance being shown in Fig. 8 in which the apertured extremity of the tape is passed rearwardly through the lower slot and the stud passed through the aperture. The tape is then threaded rearwardly through the upper slot and forwardly again through the lower slot around the lower edge of the base, then forwardly again through the upper slot and its upper extremity attached to the supporting member of the clasp or other part of the hose supporter in any suitable'manner. In this modification it should be noticed that the front'of the base is entirely covered with tape;
Another instance of the use of a single ply tape is shown in Fig. 9 in which the a ertured extremity of the tape is first tireaded forwardly through thelower slot and the stud passedthrough the aperture. The tape is then threaded rearwardly through the upper slot and around the lower end of the base and the stud passed through a second aperture. The tape is then passed rearwardly again through the upper slot and its upper extremity secured to the hose supporter in any suitable manner.
While the device above described embodies the preferred form of my invention yet the same is susceptibleto such modification as I may fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a button clasp a base plate provided with slots and a projecting stud, an apertured tape having one of its extremities slipped over said stud and its other extremelastic member pressed over the stud in front of thetape, whereby both extremities of the tape are secured to the base plate and the front portion of the base plate between the slots is lined with tape. 7
2. In a device of the character described a slotted base plate having its front and rear faces lined with tape, the said tape being folded over a support and having its extremities threaded through said base plate.
3. In a button clasp a slotted base plate having its front face portion between the slots lined with tape, the said tape being folded-over a. support and having its extremities threaded through said base plate, and a button shank mounted on said base plate in front of said tape. I
4. In a button clasp a slotted base plate ity passed through said slots, and a recessed having its front face portion between the slots lined with tape, the said tape being threaded, through said plate, a member mounted on said base plate in front of said tape and means'for causing said member .to co-act with said plate to fasten said tape.
5. In a button clasp a base plateprovided with a slot, a support and a tape folded over said support, the said tape having both of its extremities passed in the'same direction through said slot, and the said base plate being strung so that its front face portion between the slots is lined with tape.
' 6. In a button clasp a slottedbase plate having a stud mounted thereon between the slots, an apertured tapeslipped over said stud and passed through said slots, and a recessed elastic member pressed over said stud and against the front of said tape, whereby the tape is secured to that portion of the base plate between the slots.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of March, 1916.
' HENRY, J. STUART.
