Description
I W. WPSODEN. Improvement in Barn-Door Hangers.
No.129,065. Patented July 16, 18 72.

IMPROVEMENT IN BARN-DOOR HANGERS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,065, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Door and Gate Hanger and Roller, invented by WILLIAM W. SODEN, of Unadilla, in the county of Otsego and State of New York.
The invention relates to improvement in door and gate hangers, and consists of a grooved rail forthe beveled or oval-faced rollers, with the side walls cut out or notched down to the bottom of the groove at suitable intervals along the rail, and, preferably, on the opposite sides alternately, to allow the water or other matters collecting in the groove, to escape and not obstruct the rollers.
The grooved rails with oval or beveled headrollers, are used in preference to the oval rails with grooved wheels, to save the expense of forming the grooves in said wheels, as the rails can be cast with the grooves without any cost for the groove beyond the cost of the simplest form of casting.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hanger, roller, and rail. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the "line .00 w also a section of the door or gate and the beam for supporting the rail, shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a top view of the rail.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-. sponding parts.
The hanger-plate A is provided with ribs a to give it the requisite strength; and near the upper end said plate is divided at B into two branches, 0, which connect with a top frame consisting of two bars, D, arranged parallel with each other a sufficient distance apart to aiford room for a beveled or oval-faced roller,
E, and bent together and united at the ends F, forming a kind of yoke with bearings G on the under sides at the center for the trunnions or journals H of the oval or beveled head= roller E. The inside of the bar D, which is joined to the branches 0, and the said branches for a short distance below the junction, are made plain and flat to facilitate the use of a green-sand core in the mold for casting. At the lower end of said plate, and at suitable points above said end, ears K, with holes, are provided for holding the screws or bolts used for fastening the plate to the gate or door. The strengthening-ribs aupon the concave side of the plate, terminate at their outer edges in the same plane with the extreme edges of said plate, so as to bear upon the door or gate, as the said edges of the plate do. L represents the grooved rail to be placed on the beam M for the rollers to run on, and N represents the notches in the side walls to allow the water and other matters to escape or be forced out by the wheel.
I propose to cast the wheel journals and the bearings therefor in the hanger in chill molds, for hardening them for wearing longer than they would if not hardened.
Having thus described my invention, I clai as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The beveled or oval-faced wheel, in combination with a grooved and notchedrail, substantially as shown and described.
' WILLIAM W. SODEN.
