PIANO-BENCH.
Application filedJulyfl, 191.8 Serial-No. 243,050.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, lvl'a'r'rnnw EDWARD CorLEY', a. subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Birch Grove,- Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Piano-Benches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,' and exact description of the invention, such as will 'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in piano benches having means for slidably supporting a seat thereon.
An important object of this invention is to provide a piano bench of the character described having a reciprocatory seat arranged therein, and one which may be concealed from view when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a piano bench of the character described having a slidably arranged seat therein and a music supporting stand arranged therebelow.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bench of the character described, which is neat in appearance, of highly simplified construction, and one which is possessed of great utility.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a piano bench embodying my invention, parts thereof being shown in section,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the same, and
Fig. 4 is a. detail transverse section through one of the hinges embodied in my invention. 7
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 generically designates my improved bench, which in manufacture may be made principally of wood. The bench is supported by legs 6, arranged at the four corners of a cross member 7. Transversely extending supports 8 are arranged on the longitudinally extending member 7. Longitudinally extending parallel rails, designated by the numeral 9, are arranged on the transversely Specification of Letters Patent.

extending supports 8. A seat is slidably arranged "On the rails 9, and is generically designated by the numeral 10. A frame 11 is provided with apertures at its end portions adapted for the reception of axles 12. Wheels 13 are rotatably arranged onthe axles l2, and are adapted to engage with the rails 9. A cushionl l is arranged in the "seat 10. The rear side of the bench 5 is provided with a vertically arranged longitudinally extending back 15. Leaf hinges 16 are arranged on the upper surface of the back 15, and are connected with a top 17 The top of the back 15 extends in a horizontal plane with the top of the seat 10. The front side of the bench 5 is provided with a vertically arranged longitudinally extend mg front piece 18. A section 19 is hingedly secured to the front 18 by hinges 20. ,Wi'th reference to Fig. 3 it will be apparent that when it is desired to close the seat, the hinged section 19 may be arranged above the front piece 18. The top 17 is arranged horizontally above the seat 10 and engaged with the front section 19, the section 19 ex- .tending into a longitudinal groove 21 in the top 17.
It will be obvious that when it is desired to use the seat 10, the sections 19 and 17 are lowered, thus exposing the seat 10. By virtue of the front piece of the bench being sectional, the same will not interfere with a person moving along the seat whilesitting on the cushion 14.
lNhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement of parts, as will remain within the spiritof the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: g
1. A bench comprising, supporting legs; a
I body portion connecting the legs; parallel supporting members; a seat slidably arranged 0n the tracks; a vertical back arranged on the body portion; a top hinged to the :back; and a vertically arranged longitudinally extending front, said front being sectional; and sides connecting the back and front.
3. A bench comprising, supporting legs; a body portion arranged on the legs; a plurality of spaced transversely extending supporting members arranged on the body portion; parallel tracks arranged on the body portion; a seat slidably rranged on the tracks; a vertical back arranged on the body por tion and having its upper edge in a hori- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for zontal plane with the top of the seat; a top secured to the back; hinges connecting the top and the back; said top having a longitudinally extending groove adjacent one edge thereof; a vertically arranged longitudinally extending front, said front being sectional and adapted to extend into the longitudinally extending groove of the top; and sides connecting the back and front.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
