ATTACHMENT FOR OUTSIDE CALIPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
1 Patented J an. '7, 1919.
Application filed June 24, 1918. Serial No. 241,579.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Roy LYNN. MOSSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Gibson, State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Outside Calipers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable other skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of measuring instruments, particularly a pair of calipers, and more especially to an attachment for the caliper.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient, improved and practical attachment of this kind, which may be manufactured at a small cost and sold at a reasonable profit.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for a pair of outside calipers, adapted to be manipulated as the jaws of the calipers are adjusted for measuring the diameter of a bolt, so as to determine the size of opening to be drilled for tapping, to receive the threaded bolt.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pair of calipers showing the attachment as applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the implement.
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation showing the opposite edge of the implement.
Fig. 41 is a view in side elevation of the pair of calipers showing the jaws adjusted and the attachment manipulated for determining the size of drill or die to be used for pipe threading.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 and 2 designate the jaws of the caliper, the extremities 3 of the curved ends of which being adapted to be spaced apart, by adjusting the jaws 1 and 2, for measuring the diameter of a bolt. The jaws l and 2 are pivotally united by means of the double headed pin 4;. The pivoted ends of the jaws of the calipers have integrally formed on their outer faces circular or disk shaped enlargements 5, through which the pivot pin also passes. The jaw 2 on one face thereof is provided with spaced pins 6 and 7. The attachment 8 is pivoted by means of a pin 9 to one face of the jaw 1. The attachment comprises a pair of sub stantially right angularly disposed arms 11 and 12. The arm 11 is curved and is designed to cooperate with the spaced pins 6 and 7, while the arm 12 has its lower portion 13 curved in the direction of the jaw 2. in order to determine the size of drill for drilling a hole or an opening to be tapped to receive a certain size bolt, the jaws 1 and 2 are set, whereby their extremities are spaced apart, for measuring the diameter of bolt. In setting the jaws 1 and 2, so that the extremity 3 will engage diametric opposite portions of the bolt the curved edge 14: of the arm 11 is held in contact with the pin 6, in which case the extremity 15 of the curved portion of the arm 12 will become spaced from the inner edge of the jaw 2, thereby determining the diameter of drill to be employed. In order to determine the size of drill or die for pipe threading, the extremities 3 are set to engage diametrically opposite portions of the pipe. In this case the outer edge 16 of the arm 11 is held in contact with the pin 7, and as a result thereof the extremity 15 will become spaced from the inner edge of the jaw 2 to determine the size of drill or die to be used for pipe threading.
The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a pair of calipers, of a drill determining tool pivotally mounted upon one of the jaws of the calipers, said tool comprising a pair of substantially right angularly disposed arms, one extending downwardly and curved toward the other jaw of the calipers and the other being arcuately curved toward said other jaw, and spaced means on said other jaw, with either one of which the arcuate arm cooperates for spacing the extremity of the other arm from one of the jaws correspond ing with the measurement made by the caliper jaws.
2. A drill determining tool for a pair of outside calipers, comprising in combination with a pair of pivoted caliper jaws, a member comprising a pair of arms and be- 10 the first arm from the inner edge of said other jaw according to the measurement made by the caliper jaws.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
