E. S. CARLSEN.
SPRINKLER.
APPLICATION FILED AUGJZ, 1918.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
EUGENE S. CARZSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPRINKLER.
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a nozzle or sprinkler to be used in connection with a water supplying hose for causing the water expelled therefrom 'inafter more fully to be discharged in the form of a solid or continuous stream or a shower or spray, as may be desired, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof as will be hereset forthand specifically claimed. p w
The principal object of the invention, is to provide a device of the above mentioned general character, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable and efficient in operation, and so made that it can be used for throwing a solid or continuous stream of water in a desired volume, for laying the dust in for other purposes, or for discharging water in the form of a shower or spray, for watering delicate plants or lawns.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that it can be used as a stationary sprinkler or fountain, or in other words, can be located on the ground in a fixed and upright position, to the end, that a. given area of a lawn or garden can be sprayed for a desired length of time or until it becomes thoroughly saturated or moistened. Still another object is to provide means for discharging spray in the form of concentric circles. A still further object is to furnish means for regulating the volume of water discharged through the sprinkler. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the following description and explanation.
In the accompanying drawing which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the invention-- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional.
view of the sprinkler showing a portion of a hose or coupling connected thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

33 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows, show ng the adjustable member of the body portion of the-device detached, and
Fig. 4: is a fragmental sectional view of a portion of the body of the sprinkler showmg a modification in the construction of and the means for packing the combined regulatmg valve stem and support.
Like numerals of reference refer to cor-v responding parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
he'reference numeral 6 designates, as a portion of the sprinkler, which as will be understood from the drawing is elongated in shape and has its'upper or front portion cylindrical and partly screw threaded. The lower'or rear portion of the body 6 is cut away to provide a flat wall or surface which is provided at about its middle portion with a screw threaded rod 8 which is extended at a right angle to the face of the body. The upper or outer end of the body 6 is provided centrally thereon with a reduced portion or neck 9 on which is fitted a thimble or cap 10 which is contracted at its upper or front end and provided at said end with an opening 11 which is by preference outwardly flared as shown. Extending centrally and longitudinally from the rear or lower end of the body 6 into the same, is a screw threaded opening 12 for the reception and operation of the screw threaded portion of a valve stem 13 which has its lower or rear portion pointed so as to pierce the ground and to enable it to act as a support for the sprinkler. The upper portion of the valve stem 13 is reduced as at 14 and is without screw threads. This reduced portion is extended throughthe reduced portion 15 of the opening 12 which reduced opening communicates at its inner end with the opening 12 and at its front or upper end with the thimble or cap' 10. The front or upper end of the reduced portion 14 of the valve stem has detachably mounted thereon a head or valve 17 which, as is shown, is enlarged from each of its ends toward its middle portion and is of sufiicient size to close the opening 11 in the thimble or cap 10 when adjusted by means of the valve stem.
Mounted on the lower or rear portion of the circles around the upper front portion of the member 20.
The body 6 is provided with a palr of longitudinally extended channels 22 and 23 the former of which communlcates at lts upper or front end with the space between the thimbles or caps 10 and and opens at its lower or rear end in the flat face 7 of the body 6 at one side of the rod 8 on said body. The channel 23 communicates at 1ts upper end with the cavity of the thimble or cap 10 and opens at its lower or rear end in the face 7 of the body on the opposlte slde of the rod 8 from the opening of the channel 22 as 18 clearly shown in Fi 2 of the drawing. The face 7 of the b0 y is provided around each of the openings 22 and 23 therein with an annular boss 2 1 which are for the purpose of engaging suitable open ngs in a gasket 25 of leather or other sultable material, so as to prevent said gasket turning. This gasket is fitted around the rod 8 and 1s interposed between the fiat surface 7 of the body portion 6 and the flat surface 26 of the adjustable member of the body, which member is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 27 and is provided with a channeled extension 28, which extension is by preference internally screw threaded at its rear or lower portion to engage. screw threads on a hose or coupling 29 which has communication with a supply of water not shown. The channel 30 of the extension 28 extends or opens through the fiat face of the adjustable member 27 in the form of a segmental opening or slot 31, see Fig. 3 of the drawing, so that the desired end of the slot or opening 31 can be placed in communication with either of the openings 22 or 23 in the body of the sprinkler. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing, the adjustable member 27 is provided with a central opening 32 for the reception of the rod 8 on which it is rotatably mounted and can be fixed in the desired position by means of a thumb nut 33 mounted on the outer portion of said screw threaded rod.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the opening 12 in the body 6 is provided with an annular enlargement 34 for the reception of packing 35 Which can be inserted through an opening 36 extended from the enlarged opening 34 through thewall of the body 6 at a suitable point above the lower or rear end of said body. Located in the opening 36 is a set screw 37 which impinges at its inner end against the packing 35 and is used for firmly holding the valve stem 13 in its adjusted position.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown a modification in the construction of the valv stem 13 and in the construction of the opening 12 therefor which consists in omittmg the enlargement 34 of said opening and in forming the valve stem with an unthreaded and reduced portion 38 which construction will provide a space for packing 35 which can be inserted through the opening 36 in the wall of the body 6 in which the set screw 37 is located. The packing used in either of the constructions is for the purpose of preventing leakage b back pressure.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawing, it will be readily understood and clearly seen, that, assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the channel 30 in the extension 28 of the adjustable member 27 will through its mouth or opening 31 communicate with the opening or channel 23 thus causing water to be discharged through the opening 11 of the thimble or cap 10 in the form of a solid or continuous stream, it being understood that the valve or head 17 can be adjusted so as to regulate the volume of the water discharged. If it is desired to use the device for the purpose of spraying, all that is necessary is to turn the adjustable member 27 to a position to bring the mouth 31 of the channel 30 of said adjustableirnember into communication with the opening or channel 22 when it is apparent that water will be discharged through the perforations 21 in the cap or thimble 20 or spraying mem- Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina sprinkler, the combination with a body having a flat faced cut-away portionand provided with an opening centrally and longitudinally located in sald 'body, said body also having a pair of longitudinally disposed openings extending from the front end thereof to said flat face, of a cap or thimble mounted on the front end of the body and around said central opening and one of the other openings and having an opemn in its front end, a perforated cap or thim le mounted on the body around the first named thim'ble, a stem adjustably located In said central opening, a valve or head mounted on the front end of said stem, and an adjustable member rotatably mounted on the fiat faced portion of the body and having means to connect it to a hos and a passage way for water disposed for alternatlve communlcation with said pair of opemngs.
2. In a sprinkler, the combination with a body having a flat faced cut-away portion provided with a screw rod extended therefrom, said body also having a central and longitudinal opening extended therethrough and a pair of openings extended from the front end thereof to said flat face, of a cap or thimble mounted on the front end of' the body around the central opening therein and having an opening in its front end, a perforated cap or thimble mounted on the body around the first named thimble and spaced at its inner portion therefrom, one of the openings of said pair communicating with the cavity of the first named thimble and the other of said openings with the space between said thimbles, a stem adjustsaid screw rod and having means to connect it to a hose and a passage way for Water dlsposed for alternatlve communication with said pair of openings.
