WILLIE A. MORGAN, OF MARSI-IVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
AIVIBULANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed November 16, 1917. Serial No. 202,409.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WUJLIE A. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshville, in the county of Union and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ambulances', of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carriages and wagons, and more especially to ambulances; and the object of the same is to produce a military ambulance capable of being mounted upon a horse or other draft animal and of sustaining a stretcher so as to carry the patient over the animals back.
Itis well known that in some regions it is impossible to move a vehicle, and pack animals such as horses and mules are needed to transport supplies and munitions and to carry the wounded from the front; and the object of my invention is to produce an ambulance in the form of a stretcher capable of being mounted on the back of a horse or mule so that the patient may lie prone thereon and be moved with comparative ease.
Details are set forth in the following specilication, and reference is made to the drawings wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of this device strapped onto a mule.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed from the animal.
My ambulance as a whole comprises a stretcher broadly designated by the numeral l and herein shown of a size to receive but a single patient.
The support comprises two side bars 2 from which uprights 3 rise to and are connected with the side bars of the stretcher, and appropriate braces 4 are employed to hold the parts rigid. Straps 5 and buckles 6 may be used to hold the patient on the stretcher, especially if the bridle path is very steep or rough. Connected with the front ends of the side bars are haines 'T which are to be fastened to the horses collar C, and a belly band 8 is also connected with the side bars at about their mid-length, its sides being connected with their rear ends by bracing straps 9 and its bottom being connected with the collar by a breast strap l0. I lay no claim to the features of the harness, excepting as they are attached to and connected with the supporting structure for the stretcher.
The use of the device is obvious. It can be quickly applied to or removed from a horse or mule. The patient will be lifted onto the stretcher and perhaps strapped in place with the straps 5 and the buckles and he can be as quickly removed when he reaches the first hospital or place of treatment.
Vhat is claimed is:
In an animal-carried ambulance, bars secured to the belly-band and to the hames of the harness for the animal, brace straps be tween said bars and belly-band, a connecting strap between the belly-band andl haines, uprights on the bars, transverse braces between each pair of oppositely disposed uprights, and a stretcher supported on said uprights.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIE A. MORGAN.
