Be it known that we, WILLIAM GOULD and HERBERT WILLIAM GoULD, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at 1 All -Souls avenue, Willesden, London, N. W.,
England, have invented new and useful Improvements in 'Hot-WaterHeating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic systems of heating and circulating hot water, the ob]- ect being to permit a heating system to bc installed without regard to the position of the boiler or heating means and to siniplify and reduce the cost of installation and accelerate and maintain an automatic and continuous circulation.
In carrying this invention into practice, instead of conveying the pipe from the boiler or heating means up through atank to a point above the level of the water in the system, we subdivide the tank into two or more compartments by partitions or walls. These partitions are arranged or constructed so that the compartments communicate, the one with the other alternately, at` a point above the level of the water 1n the' system and below the level of the water.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and easily carried into practice we have appended the accompanying draw- In s.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, A rep* resents the hot water distributing tank and B the cold water feed tank which may be separate (as shown) or suitably combined with tank A. through the radiators. The tank B may be fitted with the usual supply pipe Z), the supply of water from the tank B to tank A passing through a pipe 1), preferably connected to the underside ofthe tanks.
The tank A is subdivided into two or more compartments of the requisite size by dividing walls or partitions. The pipe al, through which the hot water passes from the boiler L to the tank A, communicates, as shown best in Fig. l, with the compartment in the said tank A formed by the wall or partition a2, which wall or partition either extends a certain distance above thc level of the water in the System. Or the partition may extend to the full height of the interior of said tank A, and in the latter case a perforation or perforations P2 is or are made in the said wall or partition a2 at a point above the level of the water in the system, as shown in Fig. 5. The partition or wall a3 in said tank A extends from the upperinner wall to within a short distance of the bottom or lower wall. Or this partition or wall 0&3 may extend the full depth of the tank A, in which case a perforation or perforations p3 is or are formed in said wall or partition a3 near the ylower part, as likewise shown in Fig. 5.
There may be a number of these walls or partitions, each alternate one communicating with the succeeding compartment near the upper part and the intermediate ones communicating with the succeeding compartment near the lower part.
The operation of the system is as follows When the system is iilled with cold water, the level in all compartments of the tank A is at the point indicated by the dot and dash line W L in Fig. 1. The boiler L is then started up, and the water heated thereby rises in the pipe al due to its lower density. When the water reaches the top of the partition a2 it flows over into the space between the partitions a2 and a3, and as this passage is somewhat restricted, when the iiow is sutlicient the entire space above the original water level in the iirst two compartments becomes lled with water, the air which originally filled this vspace having been carried over by the water into the compartments beyond the partition a3. From these latter compartments the water liows through the distributing pipes D to the radiators and thence back to the boiler, where either side.

An arrangement of this kind is shown by Fig. 6.
It will also be evident that pipe al may communicate with an independent tank E, as shown by Fig. 7, such independent tank communicating, at a point above the level of thev water in the system, with a distributing tank either with or without a dividing wall or partition or partitions. Or the independent tank may communicate with the pipes circulating the water throughout the system, at a point above the level of the water in the system. We are aware vthe use of the upper portion of the pipe leading from the boiler has been suggestedfor this purpose.
Having thu's fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a hot water circulating system, the combination of a distributing tank formed with a plurality of vertical partitions dividing said'tank into a plurality of compart- In this way ments, said partitions having openings providing communication between said compartments alternatelyat the top and'bot- Y tom of the tank, a supply pipe communicating with 'one of said compartments, and a plurality of distributing pipes leading. from the bottoms of other of said compartments, there being only. one. distributing pipe leading from any one compartment. In a hot water circulating system, the combination of a distributing tank formed with a plurality of: v'erticalLpartitions dividing said tank Yinto a Yplurality of compartments, .certain-of saidpartitions being secured *tol the upper wallv of said tank and terminating labovel the Vlower wallV thereof, and the remaining. partitions being secured to the lower wall of said'tank and terminating below the upperv wallvthereof, and arranged in alternaterelation to the partitions secured'to the upperl wall, a-'supply pipe communicating lwith Vone outermosty compartment, and a* plurality of distributing pipes leading from the bottoms of all of the other compartments, except that compartment adjacent to the lcompartment with which the. supply` pipe communicates.
