Be it known that I, ALBERT E. HoLADAY,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Naugatuck, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Bars .for Clothes-Wringers, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had therein to be accompanying drawlng.

This invention relates to bearing plates for the pressure bar of a clothes wringer, and is especially adapted to be used in connection with a clothes wringer having an automatic pressure release as disclosed in my application filed January 18, 1917, Serial No. 143,090, the object being to provide a bearing plate which is so constructed that the same can be placed in position on the pressure bar without the use of fastening means such as screws and the like.

Another object of my invention is to pro vide a bearing plate which is provided with an attaching member in the form of a spike having spurs for holding the spike in position within the pressure bar in such a man.- ner that after the same has been once placed in position it will be securely held so as to support the bearing plate in position to be engaged by the pressure screw of the wringer.

Another object of my invention is to provide a bearing plate which is preferably formed of a casting having at one end an attaching spike, and at the other end an apertured boss to receive a releasing bar, said boss forming means for positioning the pressure spring.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

In the drawing. '1 indicates a movably mounted top bar of a clothes wringer which is provided with a pivoted latch 2 adapted to engage a keeper 3 carried by the side bars 4: of a wringer frame, said latch being adapted to be engaged by a releasing bar 5. The movably mounted top bar 1 carries a pressure screw 6 adapted to cooperate with thepressure bar 7 for adjusting the pressure on the pressure sprin s 8 of the wringer, the above description eing given so that the application of my improved construction of bearing plate to a clothes wringer can be readily understood.

My invention consists in providing a pressure bar 7 with a bearing plate at each end for the pressure screws 6 formed of a casting comprising a body portion 9 having a groove 1.0 to receive the pressure screw 6, and an apertured boss 11 through which the releasing rod 5 passes over which is arranged the pressure spring 8 so as to hold the pressure spring in position to be adjusted by the pressure bar and to guide the releasing bar 5 in its vertical movement by the movement of the pressure roll which is clearly described in my application above referred to.

One end of the body portion 9 is provided with an obliquely extending spike 12 which is preferably formed with longitudinally disposed ribs 13 serrated to form spurs 14;. In placing the bearing plate 9 in position upon the end of the pressure bar 7 a hole 15 is bored obliquely into the end of the pressure bar 7 and the spike 12 is forced into the bore thus formed, the spurs embedding themselves in thewalls of the bore so as to securely fasten the bearing plate on the end of the pressure bar, with the end of the bearing plate in contact with the end of the pressure bar in such a manner that the bearing plate will be securely fas' tened to the pressure bar. The bore in the pressure bar 7 has a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the spike so that when the spike is forced into the bore, the longitudinally disposed ribs out their own passages so that the spurs embed themselves in the wood of the pressure bar in such a manner that the bearing plate is attached rigidly to the pressure bar so that it will withstand the pressure exerted thereon by 'the pressure springs and pressure screws.

. to produce an abutting surface which strengthens the bearing and relieves the pressure bar from the pressure of the pressure screw so as to prevent the spike from. splitting the pressure bar when in operation. By this construction it will be seen that the bore in the pressure bar 7 extends into the end thereof from a point spaced from the top of the pressure bar, while in the preferred form the spike of the pressure plate extends from the end of the plate.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a bearing plate for a clothes wringer which is provided with an attaching spike serrated for the purpose of embedding itself within the wood of the pressure bar for attaching the bearing plate securely to the pressure bar.

I claim:

I 1. As a new article of manufacture, a

bearing plate for a pressure bar comprising a body portion having an integral serrated spike extending obliquely from one end thereof.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a bearing plate for a pressure bar, comprising a body portion having a groove to re nesses.
