To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. METTLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ames, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Liquid-Hydrocarbon Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in liquid hydro-carbon burners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a plumbers melting pot and it is an object of the invention to rovide a novel and improved burner of this kind which permits the use of low gravity oil as a fuel and which burner operates without smoke irrespective of the grade or gravity of the oil.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved burner of this type which produces greater heat with less fuel when considered in connection with burners of a similar type now generally employed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved burner of this general character which includes a metallic member having a socket or pocket therein with the inner end thereof enlarged to aiford a mixing chamber and wherein openings are in communication with the miXing chamber substantially tangential to the circumference thereof whereby a rotary movement is imparted to the fuel or vapor resulting in a thorough mixture of the air and vapor.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a metallic block having a socket or pocket therein with the lower portion enlarged to afford a mixing chamber together with air vents in communication with the mixing chamber and wherein said block has disposed therethrough a series of connected ducts discharging within the mixing chamber and adapted for communication with a source of fuel supply, said ducts affording an effective means for vaporizing the fuel before entering within the mixing chamber.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved liquid hydro-carbon burner whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth,
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a burner constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken diagonally of the burner as disclosed in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line L- i of Fig. 2.
My improved burner as herein disclosed comprises a metallic body or block B and fording means whereby air may be admitted within the chamber M to mix with the vaporized hydro-carbon fuel delivered within said chamber M. The openings or ports 2 are substantially tangential to the peripheral wall of the chamber M so that the air entering into the chamber M through said openings 2 produces a rotary motion within said chamber and thereby more thoroughly mixes with the fuel vapor before the igmtion of the vapor within the outer end portiOn of the socket or pocket 1 and wh ch outer end portion constitutes a COIIlbllSiZlOn chamber C. The duct 5 has one end opening through a second face of the block or body B. In communication with the open end of the duct 3 is the conduit or pipe 6 which leads from a suitable source of fuel supply. The open ends of the ducts 4: and 5 are normally closed by the removable plugs 7. It will be self-evident that upon removing the plugs 7 and the conduit or pipe 6, the ducts 3, 41 and 5 may be cleansed when the occasions of practice may require.
In communication with the duct 4: adj acent its open end is the duct 8 extending through the body or block B in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the socket or pocket 1. The top or outer end of the duct 8 1s open and is normally closed by the removable plug 7. The lower end of the duct 8 is in communication with the duct 9 extending inwardly of the block at a point below the pocket or socket l and the outer end of the duct 9 is open but normally closed by the removable plug 7 Disposed through the lower face of the body or block B at substantially the axial center of the chamber M and in communication with said chamber is a needle valve N and the inner end portion of the duct 9 is in communication with the exit end of the needle valve N. The valve element or stem 10 comprised in the needle valve N may be adjusted into open'or closed position in any manner desired. The liquid fuel as it passes through the ducts 3, 5, 4, 8 and 9 is vaporized when delivered within the chamber M through the needle valve N and which vaporization is'eflected by the heat generated within the combustion chamber G and contained within the body or block B. It has been fully demonstrated in actual practice that my improved burner as herein described and illustrated can be employed with an oil of law gravityto generate a flame free of smoke and which can be burned without danger or attention.
From the I foregoing description, it is thought to be'obvious that-a liquid hydrocarbon burner constructed in accordance with my invention is "particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A burner of the class described consisting of a block of heat conducting material provided wvith a pocket open at aface of the block and closed at its inner end, said block having communicating ducts therein leading from a face of the block to the inner end portion of the pocket, and air openings disposed through the block and in communication with the inner end portion of the pocket.
2. A burner of the class described consisting of a block of heat conducting material provided with a pocket open at a face of the block, said block having communicating ducts therein leading from "a face of the blockto the inner end portion of the pocket, and a 1r openings disposed through the block and in communication with the inner end portion of the pocket, said air openings being substantially tangential to the pocket.
3.
