ATENT @Fil ANGER C. CARLSON, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latented Dec. 2d, i918.
Application filed December 6, 1915. Serial No. 65,291.
To ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Arens C. CARLSON, a citizen 0f the United States of America, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The primary obj ect of my invention is to provide means whereby the water used in a washing machine may be conveniently kept at a temperature which shall facilitate and improve the work usually done by such machines. As such a device l provide water heating means that is simple in construction, may be easily attached to the machine and may be kept in operation without continued attention on the part of the operator.
l will now describe my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may understand and construct the same, it being premised however that changes may be made in the structures shown and described without departing from the invention claimed.
Figure l is a fragmentary view of a rotatable wash tub and its support, showing my invention applied thereto:
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing a modified form of heating means, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the inside of the tub bottom showing the tank connection with the tub bottom.
Referring t0 the drawing, the reference numeral 2 indicates the tub portion of an ordinary washing machine of the type in which the tub itself is rotatable, as for instance, for coperation with a stationary dasher. Communicating with the tub through the bottom wall 3, is a water tank i4. This tank, which is preferably constructed of thin sheet metal to obtain the maximum conductivity of heat, and is relatively small and drum-like in appearance, has .its connection with the bottom of the tub by means 0f a pipe 5 carrying a flange or head 6 which abuis against the under face of the tub body and cooperates with a top plate 7 through connecting bolts or fastening means 8 to effect a proper seal. The plate member 7 is preferably provided with a plurality of perforations 7a, which, while allowing for communication between the tub chamber and tank, are of such size as to prevent small articles in the tub, from working down into the mouth of the pipe 5. The tank is also provided with a capped drain outlet 9.
ln order not to interfere with the action of the rotating tub, the pipe 5 passes through an opening 14 in the stationary support or housing l5 of the washing machine; the opening 14 being of ample size t0 allow the pipe 5 to rotate freely with movement of the tub 2 upon the ball-bearing 16.
Disposed. beneath the tank 4 is a gas burner 10 supported by a standard or bracket ll that is carried on a suitable base board l2 mounted across the foot rods or braces 13, as clearly shown.
lt will of course be understood that with water in the tub, a portion of it will pass to the tank. Any air that may be imprisoned in the tank, incident to sudden charging of the water in the tank may be freed by opening the drain 9 or it will be released upon agitation of the water set up in the washing of the clothes. Vhen the tank has thus been filled with water, the gas burner l0 or oil burner 17 (Fig. 3) disposed beneath the tank, may be lighted. The heat thus generated quickly penetrates the thin metal of the tank and brings the temperature of the water therein to a high point. municates its heat to the larger bodv of water in the tub, and the steam thus generated greatly facilitates and improves the work done by the washing machine.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a rotatable wash tub and its support, a heater comprising a tank disposed below the bottom of said tub and below the top of said support, and a vertical pipe connected and communicating with said tank centrally of the top thereof and connected and communicating with said tub centrally of its bottom wall, said support being provided with a hole permitting the passage of said pipe, said tank being rotatable with said tub, and a burner disposed below said tank and stationary in respect to said support.
This wat-er in turn quickly com- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set y my hand. ANGER C. CARLSON.
