Be it known that I, J OAOHIM BoLLIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mon: roe, in the county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a saw clamp designed to permit the component parts thereof to be quickly disassembled for a convenient arrangement of the clamp in a tool chest or the like, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clamp constructed in accordance with my invention;

The clamp constructed in accordance with my invention consists of a pair of identically constructed members 10, each formed with apertured lugs 11 disposed in overlapping relation and through which a bolt 12 is passed constituting a pivot about which members may be moved singly or in unison. While the members 10 may be constructed from any suitable material and configuration, they are preferably formed from metal and are given a substantially U-shaped formation. Frojecting from the parallel portion of one of the members 10 is a block 13 disposed adjacent the end of said member, and this block is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the member. A block 14 is arranged in a similar manner and secured to the member 10 and at an appropriate point above the pivot thereof. Projecting from the block 13 is a plate 15 formed at its outer extremity to provide an interiorly threaded sleeve 16 to accommodate an adjusting screw 17. The screw has a swivel connection as at 18 with a relatively broad member 19 which is adapted to engage the bench or other support shown in dotted lines to which the clamp is attached. member 19 is a pointed spur 20 which is embedded in the bench or other support when the member 19 is brought into contact therewith as will be readily understood. Projecting from the block 1 1 in the same direction of the plate 15 is a pair of spaced wings 21 which are disposed above the plate 15 and lying in a plane at the opposite sides of the latter, and cooperating with the screw 17 and the member 19 to maintain the clamp fixed relatively upon a bench. or other suitable support. The wings are divergently disposed as shown to space the forward extremities thereof the requisite distance to ob tain an effective purchase upon the bench or other suitable support with which the clamp is used. In the further accomplishment of this end the forward extremity of the wings are curved downwardly to provide the pointed spurs as 22 which embed themselves in the bench or other support as will be readily understood. In practice, the edge of a bench, shelf or other suitable support is pd sitioned between the plate 15 and wings 21, subsequent to which arrangement the screw 17 is adjusted to bring the member 19 into engagement with said support thereby clamping the latter between the member 19 and the wings 21. When thus positioned upon the bench or support the member 10 carrying the attaching means is held stationary, while the other of said members 10 may be moved upon its pivot into gripping relation with the stationary members. After the saw to be treated is placed between the members 10, and the movable member moved into gripping relation with the stationary member the thumb screw 23 carried by the movable member is brought into engagement with the fixed member 10 for the purpose of holding said members in gripping relation. A block 24 is positioned between the parallel portion of the movable member and riveted or otherwise suitably secured thereto, the block having a threaded bore through which the screw 23 passes.
Associated with each of the members 10 is a substantially V-shaped jaw the shank of which is indicated at 25 to fit endwise between the parallel portion of the members while the cross pieces 26 of the respective jaws are disposed in confronting relation as shown. The cross pieces 26 rest upon the upper extremities of the members 10 and have their adjacent faces extended a slight distance beneath the ends of the members to provide relatively broad surfaces 27 between which the saw is effectively clamped. The shank of each jaw is proand having a locking element 30 pivoted between the separated portion defined by the bifurcation. When the bolts are passed through their associated parts, the locking element is swung upon its pivot to lie in a plane with the bolt, but subsequent to the proper positioning of the bolt the locking element is swung upon itspivot to lie transversely to the longitudinal center of the bolt to prevent the casual separation of its associated parts. Coil springs 31 encircle the bolts adjacent the head portion thereof, and when the bolt is placed in position the spring is placed under tension operating to hold the locking element 30 effectively engaged beneath the adjacent side of the member through which it is passed, to prevent loss of the bolt as will be readily understood. Manifestly by reason of this construction the gripping jaws may be separated from the members 10 by simply extracting the bolt 29, and the members 10 in turn separated by extracting the pivot bolt 12. This disassemblage of the parts is de sirable to permit the clampto be conveniently arranged in a tool chest or the like, and occupy a minimum amount of space therein. In addition to the device being extremely simple in its construction, it possesses maximum strength and may be conveniently handled for the purpose intended.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advan tages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that What is herein shown and described is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the'invention, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall with in the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is 1. In a clamp of the character described, a pair of pivoted members, means for hold- I ings, a locking element pivotally associated with each bolt and adapted to be arranged at'right angles thereto, and a spring encircling said bolt and arranged to exert pressure in a direction to hold 'the locking element in effective engagement with the adjacent side of said member with which it is associated.
