Description

D. STANFORD.
REFHIGEBATOR ATTACHMENT,
APPLICATION FILED AUG.3. 19th'.
LSSQYS Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
UNT 1 REFRIGERATOR ATTACHMENT.
Application led August 3,1918.
To all 'whoml t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID STANFORD, a subject of the Government of Finland, residing at New York, in the county of New York'and State of New York, have inventedv new and useful Improvements in Refrigerator Attachments. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to traps for refrigerators and has for its primary object the provision of a device of this character which may be conveniently connected with an ordinary drip pipe to receive the drippings therefrom. and to form a water-seal at the base of the pipe outside of the refrigerator and thereby close the pipe against a direct admission of warm atmospheric air thereto.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an attachment for refrigerators functioning as a preservative of the refrigerant by closing the lower .end of the drip pipe by a water-seal wherein the cold drippings from the refrigerant chamber will be permitted to accumulate and then overflow into a suitable waste receptacle.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character which will be adjustable upon the drip pipe so that relative separation of the parts can be effected to permit the device to be readily cleaned when desired.
With the alcove and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, has been illustrated, a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modiiications, within the scope of the claims may be resorted towhen desired.
Figure 1 is a front view of a refrigerator with parts broken away and parts in section, illustrating the application of the invention thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the attachment and a port-ion of the drip pipe.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section therethrough,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the sealing cup.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
Serial No. 248,158.
The invention is designed principally for use in connection with refrigerators of the type conventionally illustrated at 5 wherein 1s included a chamber 6 for the refrigerant and drip pipe 7 leading from the chamber and extending through the bottom of the refrigerator in the customary manner so that the waste drippings can be conducted to a suitable pan or receptacle when placed beneath the refrigerator.
Beneath the lower end of the drip pipe 7 is a sealing cup 8 which is provided upon its base wall with up-struck radial ribs 9. The side walls of the cup are spaced from the lower end of the drip pipe 7 and incident to the radial arrangement of the ribs 9, it will be observed that intervening discharge spaces 10 are formed between said ribs so as to provide for a proper discharge of the ldrippings from the pipe 7. Rising from the center of the cup is a vertical stem 11 which is arranged to enter the drip pipe 7 and as shown, said stem is provided with an eye 12, which has detachable connection with a snap fastening 13 on the lower end of a suspending and adjusting connection-14. The suspending and adjusting connection is preferably in the form of a chain, the same eX- tending through the drip pipe and terminating in a free end 15 adapted to be disposed in the refrigerating chamber beneath the tray 16. This free end is provided with a pin 17 which is adapted for interchangeable connection with the links of the chain and said pin is of a length appreciably greater than the maximum diameter of the drip pipe whereby it may be passed over the upper end of the drip pipe to rest thereon and thereby hold the cup against the lower end of the drip pipe and actively suspend the same therefrom.. The arrangement is such that when it is desired to clean the cup 8, the pin 17 can be removed from its link of the chain and the cup lowered until the snap fastening 13 at the lower end of the chain is exposed. 1When this is accomplished the cup can be entirely removed at the convenience of the operator and cleansed or sterilized and thereby always maintained in a highly sanitary condition. When the cup is in its normal position the drippings from the refrigerating chamber accumulate in the cup and form a waterseal for the drip pipe and the pipe is in this manner satisfactorily closed against the admission of Warm outside air to the refrigerating chamber. It is found that With the device in use the refrigerant is preservedl 5 against undue Wastage. What is claimed as new is 1. A trap for refrigerators comprising a cup,v a chain connected With the cup and adapted to pass through the drip pipe, and
10 means adapted to coact With the chain and With the drip pipe to hold the cup suspended from said drip pipe.
2. A trap for refrigerators comprising, a cup, a chain carried by the cup, and a pin interchangeably connected with the chain 15 and adapted to engage With a Xed support to hold the cup in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
DAVID STANFORD.
