IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-DESKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,871, dated July 9, 18%.

Specification of an Improvement in School- Desks, invented by WILLIAM N. FosTER, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, State of Indiana.

The nature of the invention will be fully understood from the following general description:

Figure 1 is a front view of the device; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a top view, and Fig. 4 a back view, of the same.

Two strips of wood bent into segments of a circle, represented by d and d, are used for the support of the desk. Fastened to these are two other strips of equal breadth and thickness,represented byz'andi. These are notched into the curved legs d at k, where they are secured by irons represented by k, and their lower ends rest against the curved leg (1 at n. They are to be constructed and arranged as represented in the drawing. Upon one side of bent wooden strip 43 is fastened the back a by means of the an gle'iron h, and upon the other side is fastened the desk f, which is supported in proper position by the rods 1, the strip 0', and the iron h. On the top of the desk is a cylindrical groove, 0, for holding pens, pencils, and the like. An inkstand, p, is also provided, which is fastened in the desk. n is a rail in the back of the desk, fastened between the bent wooden strips 13 and curved legs d, as represented, for the children to rest their feet on. b, the seat of the desk, is fastened to the iron b, which hinges on the castings m and c, as represented in the drawing. I c is a casting which hinges on the iron b at one end, and at the other end is provided with a mortise to accommodate the curved leg d, as represented.

When the seat is drawn up the casting b turns around its pivot on the iron casting m,

'and the iron casting a slips upward on the curved leg d until the back a and the seat I) come together. When the seat is let down the casting 0 slips down on the curved leg d until it rests on the stop 0, which will support it securely.

These desks are to be set one before the other in the usual way. The child sits on, the seat 11, with its back leaning on the back a,

I claim as new- 1. The combination and arrangement of the two pieces of bent wood (1 and i and the irons k, for the purpose and in the way substantially as set forth.

2. The combination and arrangement of the seat b, the casting b, the casting m, the casting 0, and the stop 0 with the curved leg (1, for the purpose and in the way substantially as set forth.
