To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MARrNUs FEDER FEDER- soN, a subject of the King of Denmark, having made application for United States citizenship, and a resident of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to spinning machines in general, and more particularly to machines adapted for the manipulation of hair, and has especial reference broadly to the provision of an improved machine for both twisting and kinking a sliver of fibrous material during the process of such sliver through the machine.
As the said operations of Erst twisting and then kinking the sliver of hair are ordinarily practised in rope-walks in the manner at present known to me, preparatory to boiling the hair in order to set the abrupt twisted curl or kink given the sliver by the kinking operation, as is the custom in preparing curled hair for use, 4as stuliing for cushions, mattresses and like articles, a consiflerable amount of manual labor is involved, especially in attaining a maximum amount of kinking in the twisted sliver.
I am aware that various arrangements of machinery have heretofore been proposed for the purposes contemplated by me, but in my experience, no type of arrangement which has come under my observation has proven satisfactory in operation under practical working conditions, the principal difficulty being the attainment of a suiiiciently tight kink to meet manufacturing requirements.
I he principal objects of my present invention are the provision of an improved unitary machine adapted for simultaneously performing both entire operations-that is, as the sliver is drawn through the machine, not only twisting but also kinking the sliver to the greatest extent permitted bv the nature of the liber manipulated'and performing such kinking operation in a most thorough and highly efficient manner; a machine so characterized which will successively impart the highest degree of twist and immediately thereafter the maximum amount of kink to the sliver as it moves through the machine; the provision of a machine wherein the twisting flier carries a kinking dcvice movable therewith; one which will perform said operations with certainty and expedition, one which will be of low cost of construction, maintenance and operation and one which will require a minimum of attendance, care and repair.
To gain the twofold object of the largest obtainable amount of twisting and the highest possible kink, I iind it highly expedient and desirable and to a marked degree necessary to mount the kinking device on the twisting flier so that it will revolvetherewith, to the end that the vsliver will be kinked immediately it is twisted, since thereby any bending of the sliver to untwist or unkink as it moves from the twisting iiier to the flying reel or bobbin is thereby avoided. This construction is materially more efficient in operation than a similar machine, such as the one forming the subjects-matter of my copending application Serial Number 551924, wherein the kinking device stands stationary between the twisting flier and the revolving bobbin.
In the accomplishment of the foregoing, as well as such other objects as may hereinafter appear, I have provided the machine illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figures l and 2 are respectively a side elevation and a plan view of a machine embodying my invention in preferred form;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, illustrative of the self-adjusting condenser used by me part of the machine of Figs. 1 and 2 ;y and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are respectively an enlarged side view partly in section, a transverse sectional view, and a lperspective view of a fragment of the horn used by me in the operation of kinking the sliver, Fig. 5 being a view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig.
4,- and Fig. 6 one at the side opposite to that v shown in Fig. 4.
The machine consists, broadly speaking,`
is prepared for manipulation; (b) the horn by means of which a small portion of the sliver is first momentarily partially untwisted, second, then {iat-tened,l and third finally kinked; and (e) the secondary twisting mechanism whereby the kinked sliver is tightly twisted and wound upon a reel for further treatment, is desired.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. lfand 2 of the drawings, it will be observed that in carrying outmy invention, 1 make use of a main frame, 10, carrying` at its eXtreme end a trumpet mouth, 11, through which the sliver, 12, passesy as it is drawn through the machine, said trumpet mouth v being .provided kto straighten out the sliver 'and prevent the passage of' knots and to give a'primary condensation to the sliver as it comes prepared from the vcording machine. Adjacent the trumpet mouth, 11, is an endless gill-sheet 13 (driven in a manner to be below described) by which the sliver 12 is combed and from which it is delivered to the condenser 14.
This condenser, as is clearly to be seen on an inspection of Figs. 1 and 3, comprises a pair of oppositely disposed presser members, 15 and 16, having tapering grooves as indicatedat 17 and 18 for the reception 0f the sliver 12the lowerv member 16 being carried by an extension 19 ofthe framing 10 and the 4upper member l5 pivotally supported by a link 20fin turn carried between the ends of a lever arm 21 which is pivoted at one end 22 to a vertical support 23 and has inserted at the other end, 24, a weight 25, the purpose of this construction being that of regulating v the draft or passage of the sliver 12 through the machine by maintaining a constant pressure or nip on the moving sliver, the condenser 14 automatically enlarging `or contracting agreeably with the diameter and density of the sliver.
For the purpose of twisting the sliver 12 as it comes from the condenser 14, 1 utilize a twist tube 26, carried in extensions 27 and 28 of the casing and itsel-f carrying a gear wheel 29 byv which it is rotated through the intermediate gears 30 driven from a pinion 3l on the main drive shaft 32.
To move the twisted sliver forward, impart further twist thereto, and then kink it, 1 place in suitable bearings formedin eXtensions 28 and 33 ofthe casing10, a flyer 34 mounting removably within it a conical bobbin 35, the trunnion 36 of the flier 34 encircling one end of thetwist tube 26 and the trunnion 37 thereof being apertured longitudinally for the passage of the twisted and kink'ed sliver, it being observed .that for the purpose of kinking thetwisted sliver 12 as it comes from the bobbin .35 vof fthe flier 34,1 have 'provided a kinking device, preferably a horn 44 supported within' thev flier 34'adjacent the aperture 43 in the trunnion 37, such kinking horn to be below more particularly described in connection with Figs., 4, 5 and 6.
In order to maintain the kink in the twisted sliver 12 as it emerges from the aperture 43 and gather such sliver into convenient form for such further treatment as may be desired, as boiling to set the kink, required in order to permanently give to thevhair the abrupt twisted curl or kink, 1 make use of a flier 45 carrying a removable reel 46 from which the kinked sliver is wound. The trunnions 47 and 48 of the flier are journaled respectively in' extensions 49 and 50 of the framing 10, the trunnion 47 being apertured at 51 for the passage of the kinked sliver and carrying a inion 52 by which the iier is revolved by t e main shaft 32 through a pinion 53 thereon and an intermediate gear .54, and the trunnion 48 being apertured at 55 for the passage of a drive shaft 56 supported at the opposite end by the frame eX- tension 57.
The shaft 56 is revolved by the stepped pulleys 58 and 59, (belt not shown), the latter mounted on the drive shaft 32, said shaft 56l carrying a gear 60 within the flier 45, driving a gear 61 on a counter-shaft 62, at the outer end of which countershaft is a pinion 63 driving la gear 64 on the 'shaft 65 of the reel 46. The gearing is so vproportioned that the reel 46 rotates at a lower speed than the capstan 35 to allow for reduction in length of strand due to the kinking.
For the purpose of warping the kinked sliver back and forth on the reel 46, I use a traveling block 66 mounted on a rod 67 and engaging and driven by an endless double worm 68 having at one end a pinion 69 driven from ya pinion 70-on the shaft 65 through an intermediate gear 71.
1t will thus be noted' that all the moving elements of the machine are driven from the main shaft 32 as abovedescribed, including the horn 44, and the gill plate 13 which 1s carried upon rollers 72 and 73, the lat-l ter having mounted at one end 'thereof a pulley wheel 74 driven through the belt 75 from the pulley 76, which is in turn mounted on a shaft 77 carrying a gear 78 driven by a pinion 79 on said shaft 32.

point, to-wit: the downwardly projecting portion 81. The concavo-convex portion 82 of the horn is provided for the reception of the twisted sliver 12 to the end that as it rounds such portion as is indicated in dotted lines at 83, the sliver becomes somewhat flattened as the result 0f its being drawn under very considerable tension across the edge of the horn, and in consequence of this flattening becomes partially untwisted so that as it passes over the smooth notch 84 in the margin 85, it immediately becomes tightly kinked as is clearl to be seen at 86 in Fig. 4, and is then rea y for winding on the reel 46.
By the term kink as used by me I mean not the ordinary curl, twist or spiral, but the compound curl or abrupt twisted bend formed by recurling upon itself, as it were, peripherally around a cylinder or line of minimum diameter, a filament which has been tightly twisted as in a straight line without substantial lateral displacement. I am aware that machines have heretofore been proposed for twisting fibers, and also other machines for kinking the twisted sliver or filament thusl formed, but in no machine thus far proposed, as known to me, has it been possible to carry out simultaneously and in a single machine both the preliminary twisting and the kinking operations, and at the same time so dispose said kinked sliver as to maintain and set the kink therein until it is disposed of for further treatment.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following:
1. In a spinning machine provided with a pluralityY of revolving twisting members, a curved horn intermediate said twisting members and revolving with one thereof for kinking a sliver as it is drawn from one twisting device to the other.
2. A unitary spinning machine comprising in combination a trumpet mouth, a gillplate, a condenser, a twist-sleeve, a flier and bobbin for twisting` a moving sliver, and means for kinking the twisted sliver carried by said flier and moving therewith.
3. A spinning machine comprising in combination a trumpet mouth, a gill-plate, a condenser, a twist-sleeve, a pair of fliers and bobbins or reels for twisting a moving sliver, and means carried by one of said fliers for kinking the twisted sliver as it comes from one of said bobbins or reels and is wound upon the other thereof.
4. A spinning machine comprising in combination a trumpet mouth, a gill-plate, a condenser, a twist-sleeve, a pair of fliers and bobbins or reels, for twisting a moving sliver` means for imparting motion to said gill-plate, twist-sleeve, fliers and bobbins, and means carried by one of said fliers for kinking the twisted sliver as it comes from one of said bobbins and is wound upon the other thereof.
5. In a spinning machine, in combination with a plurality of movable twisting members, a curved horn intermediate said twisting members for kinking a sliver as it is drawn from one twisting device to the other, said horn being arranged for movement with one of said twisting means.
6. In a spinning machine provided with a plurality of revolving twisting members, a curved horn intermediate said twisting members, and revolving with one thereof for kinking a sliver as it is drawn from one twisting device to the other, and auxiliary means for the other of said revolving members for reeling said kinked sliver, said twisting, kinking and reeling means being driven in unison.
'7. In a spinning machine, in combination a plurality of movable twisting members, a curved horn intermediate said twisting members for kinking a sliver as it is drawn from one twisting device to the other, said horn being arranged for movement with one of said twisting members, and connections whereby said twisting members may be driven in unison.
8. A spinning machine comprising, in combination, a trumpet mouth, a gill-plate, a condenser, a twist-sleeve, a flier and bobbin for twisting a moving sliver, and means for kinking the twisted sliver carried by said flier and moving therewith, and connections whereby the gill-plate, twist sleeve, flier and bobbin may be driven in unison.
9. A spinning machine comprising, in combination, a trumpet mouth, a gill-plate, a condenser, a twist-sleeve, a pair of fliers and bobbins or reels for twisting a moving sliver, and means carried by one of said fliers for kinking the twisted sliver as it comes from one of said bobbins or reels and is wound upon the other thereof, and connections whereby the gill-plate, twist sleeve, fliers and bobbins may be driven in unison.
10. A spinning machine comprising, in combination, a trumpet mouth, a gill-plate, a condenser, a twist-sleeve, a pair of fliers and .bobbins or reels, for twisting a moving sliver, means for imparting motion to said gill-plate, twist-sleeve, fliers and bobbins, and means carried by one of said fliers for kinking the twisted sliver as it comes from one of said bobbins and is mounted upon the other thereof, and connections whereby the gill-plate, twist sleeve, fliers and bobbins may be driven in unison.
11. A spinning machine comprising, in combination, a rotating horn having an edge being arranged obliquely with respect to its axis of rotation, means for drawing the signed my name in the presenceof the two sliver under tension over said edge and subscribed Witnesses.
