Indiana: avenue, 'Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State `of Pennsylvania, have invented new andl useful .Improvements in Card-Holders for Jacquard Looms, of which the following isa specification.
The invention relates vto Jacquard looms and has for an object to provide a card holder therefor. I
The invention comprehends among-- other features, the provision of a device for use in connection With-.the cylinder ofy Jacquard loom, on which the usual cards are arranged, and-which Vwill' serve as a stop t-o arrest and retain the cylinder in successive card-presenting-positions, and particularly aid in holding the cards in position on the cylinder to prevent them from slipping or sliding out of their proper position thereon.
I am aware that various forms of cardholding devices have been used heretofore, and that the usual method is to employ leather strap, which, bearing against the uppermost card on the cylinder, tends to hold the same firmly thereon. The straps. however, are subject to Wear, and also mutilate the cards, thus causing the loss of valuable time until the damage can be repaired. My device. coinprehends a simple arrangement that Will not mutilate or harm the cards, and Which will effectively perform the function for Which it is designed.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying' drawing, constituting a part of this specification1 in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, and in Which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of the cylinder of a Jacquard loom in operating position to secure the card upon the cylinder.

A plurality of brackets 17` are secured upon lthe needleboard, and journaled on said brackets is a horizontal rod 18 disposed immediately above the needle board, the rod 18v having suitably secured thereto a plurality of horizontally disposed fingers 19 which extend forwardly over the cylinder to rest upon the uppermost card on the upper face of the cylinder, With free ends of said fingers being slightly turned out as at 20. A suitable coil spring 21 encircles the rod 18 adjacent an end thereof, and has one end bearing against o-ne of the fingers 19, and the other end secured in one of the brackets 17, said spring exerting a torsion on the rod 18, so as to hold the fingers 19 against the upper face of the uppermost card 13, as shown in Fig. 3. 1t will be understood that by Winding' the spring around the rod a number of times, and then having the free end thereof bear against one of the fingers, the torsional effect vof the rod 18 can be increased as desired.
.-Vth this construction it will be seen that the fingers bearing down against the uppermost card, will hold the cylinder in its proper stationary position until it is turned to bring the next card in position, and referring to Fig. 2 it Will be seen that in the moment of turning the cylinder, Whereas, ordinarily the cards tend to jump up or slip off of the face of the cylinder upon Which they rest, that with the provision of the pins 15, the said fingers will not only bear against the card that is being moved out of uppermost position, but will immediately grip the edge of the card Which is being moved into uppermost position, thus preventing slippage of the card coming into the uppermost position, and serving to hold the card against the face of the cylinder.
In Figs. 4: and 5 I disclose a modied forni of my invention and in which the spring is indicated by the numeral 21a, and has one end thereof passed through a suitable opening 2lb in the rod 18, the other end of the spring being secured in an element 22 mounted to turn loosely on an end of the rod 18 and which element is shaped so that it can be readily gripped, the element being in the nature of a tensioning device, so that after the spring has 'been mounted as mentioned, the element can be turned to increase the tension of the spring, and then a pin 23 passed through an opening 24 in one ci the brackets 17, and one of a plurality of openings 25 in the element 92 will serve to hold the element 2Q in rigid and locked position on the rod 1S. lWith this construct-ion it Will be seen that the torsional effect of the spring 21 on the rod 18, can be increased or decreased as desired, and it will be clear that this will be of great advantage not only in mounting a device of the character described on a Jacquard loom, but also in the continued use of a device of this character where the spring might get Weak and will Lesafiio either have to be renewed or tightened up in order to insure proper and accurate results.
It will be seen that I do not limit myself to the particular construction set forth herein; that various slight changes may be made from the form of device illustrated, without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is deiined in the appended claim.
I claim- In a card holder for Jacquard looms, the combination with the cylinder and the traine of the loom with brackets on the frame, a rod j ournaled on the brackets, fingers projecting from the rod to extend over and above the cylinder and repose upon a card thereon, and a spring encircling the rod with one end of the spring connected to one of the brackets and the other end of the spring connected to one of the fingers, Whereby said spring will exert a torsional strain on the rod and hold the fingers against the face of the card.
