WlTNESSES INVENTR ATTORNEV FFlQ.
OTIS J, WISE. OF CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
application filed .Tune 29.1917.
lle it known that l. Oris J'. lv'isn. a citizen of the United States. residiingr at Charleston. iu the countv of Kanawha and State ot `West Virginia. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Brushes. oi. which the following is a specification.
M V invention relates to `new and useful improvements in a tooth brush and has for its principalv object. the eonstructionof the brush in such a manner that it may be easily cleaned.
Another object of the invention is the construction ot the brush in sections where-- by the bristles ma;v be separated for oleaningz.
A .further object of the invention is the provision of means for Separating;r the sections and means for returning the sections into their original position after being cleaned.
Withv these and other objects in view. the invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be vmore rlearl)v understood from vthe following description and drawing. in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 a bottom plan partly in longitu dinal section,
' Fig. 3 an end view of the sliding rod for separating the sections, and
Fig. 4 a top plan. partly in longitudinal section, showingir the sections open for cleaning.
'In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a casingr closed at, each end by means oi` plates Q and 2', each of said plates having a square opening in the center and a round opening' on either Side thereof for the purpose as will be presently described. Round rods 3 and 3f are rotatably mf untcd in the round openings in the end plates 2 and .2' and each of said round rods is provided with an extension 4 and 4t provided `with bristlesv 5. The, extensions extend beyond the end of the casingr and each of the rods 3 and 3 is provided with a spiral groove 6 and respectively.l which is housed entirelyhwithin the casing. A square rod 7 is received in the square openings in the end plates and 2 and is provided with an extension 8 which lies between the extensions 4 and 4 as is more particularly illustrated in Figs. Z and 4 of the drawings. The extension 8 is provided with bristles 9 which act with the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Der'. if?, im 8.
Serial No. 177,745.
bristles 5 on the eXtensions et and t to malte up a brush substantiall)Y of the `same shape .is tooth brushes now commonly in use. The extensions l are also round and, as is shown in the drawings. are of less diameter than the rods 23 and il wherebyY a .shoulder is formed. as indicated at lll and l0', for engaging the inner tace of the plate 2. The opposite ends of the rods 3 and 3 are reduced as indicated at 11 and 11' and are oi such diameter that the rods ma)Y freely re late within the casing".
A square sleeve '12 is adapted to pass through the square opening' in the end plate L and over the end otthe square rod 7 and said sleeve carries a cross bar 13 having pins Il and 14 depending` troni the under side lxercoli. fl`hese pins are adapted to enter lthe spiral grooves (i and G formed in the round rods 3 and 3 so that when the sleeve 1;) is moi'ed longitudinally ot the rod 7 the rods will be rotated. coiled spring 15 surrounds the rod 7 between the end of the sleeve and the plate l and when the sleeve l2 is moved longitudinally ot' the rod l the spring is compressed and when the sie ve is released it. will be forced back to its original position.
When the brush is to be used for cleaning the teeth the several parts Will be in the position indicated in Figs. 1 and Q of the drawings. Vifhen it is desired to clean the brush the end of the sleeve 12 is engaged and the sleeve pushed longitudinally of the square rod 7 and the pins operating in the spiral `grooves 6 and 6 will rotate the rods 3 and 3 and throw the extensions 4 and Li into the position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings whereby,7 the bristles will be separated. The bristles may then be cleaned and when the sleeve is released the coil spring 15, which has been compressed by the movement of the sleeve, will expand and return the Sleeve into its original position and the rods will be r0- tated to bring' the bristles adjacent the bristles 9.
Having fully described nl v invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A tooth brush comprising' a casing', av stationary rodY extending longitudinally of the casing' and beyond one end thereof, rods rotatablvimounted in the casing' on each side of the stationary rod and one end of the r0- tatable rods extending beyond one end 0f said casing parallel with the extended end of the stationary rod, bristles connected to each of the rods at the ends of the extended portions, and means carried by the stationary rod for rotating the rotatable rods.
2. A tooth brush comprising a casing, a
stationary rod extending longitudinally of' the casing, and beyond the end thereof, rotatable rods mounted on either side of the stationary rod and extending beyond the end of the casing, said rotatable rods being both provided with spiral grooves, bristles connected to the rods, a bar slidable on they stationary rod, and projections carried by the bar and engaging the spiral grooves of the rotatable rods-for rotating the same.
3. A tooth brush comprising a casing, a stationary rod extending longitudinally of the casing and beyond the end thereof, rods rotatably mounted in the casing on either side of the stationary rod, said rotatable rods having spiral grooves therein, bristles l secured to the ends of the rods, a sleeve carried by the stationary rod and slidable longitudinally thereof, a cross bar connected to the sleeve, and projections carried bythe cross bar and engaging the grooves in the rotatable rods for causing rotation thereof when the sleeve is actuated.
4. A tooth brush comprising a casing, a stationary rod extending longitudinally of the casing and beyond the end thereof, a rotatable rod mounted in the casing on either side of the stationary rod and extending beyond the end of the casing, Said rotatable rods being provided .with spiral grooves,
bristles connected to the rods, a sleeve lonrod Iand disposed in parallelism therewith,
said rotatablerods being provided with spiral grooves, a cross bar slidable lon said fixed rod and provided with projections engaging into the grooves of said rotatable rods so as to cause rotation thereof in opposite direction when the cross bar is actuated, means for normally forcing the cross bar toward one end of said casing, and means operable lexteriorly of the casing for forcing the cross bar toward the other end of said casing so as to cause predetermined rotary movement of the rotatable rods, the distance of rotation in either direction being limited by the projectons on the cross bar engaging the endsl of the grooves.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
