, OVEN, BOILER, RADIATOR, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application filed October 13, 1917. Serial No. 196,424.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM BELL WHITE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 16 Haverholt, Colne, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ovens, Boilers, Radiators, and the like, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to ovens and other similar heating or drying devices; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully de scribed and claimed. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one unit used in constructing an oven according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of a complete oven. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one oven unit, but shows a modification.
The oven is formed of a series of oven units arranged one above another. The units between the top and bottom units are preferably all alike, and are constructed as shown in Fig. 1. Each unit has a front wall 1, a back wall 2, and side walls 3 and a. The top of the oven unit is a flat plate 5, and its bottom is a similar flat plate. The side walls 3 and a have flue openings 6 and 7, and the front wall 1 has a sliding door 8 or other suitable means for cleaning out the soot which accumulates inside the flue chamber formed between the walls of the unit. The side portions 3 and 1 project above the top 5, and the back wall 2 also preferably projects above the top 5, but this is not essential in carrying out the invention.
The projecting side portions of the walls 2 and a support the flue chamber or unit next above in the series, and a heating chamber or oven is thereby formed between the two flue chambers. 1
Each oven or oven chamber 5, (Z, 7, has an opening or door which communicates with the atmosphere, so that articles may be placed in it to be cooked, heated or dried. A fire-box 10 of any approved construction is arranged under the bottom unit, and has an outlet 11 for the heated products of com bustion, which communicates with a similar opening in the bottom of the flue chamber a of the lowest unit. A tile or thick metallic plate 10 is arranged at the top of the firebox under the bottom unit. The superposed flue chambers a, (Z, 7, are connected together by lines 12, which are preferably channelshaped in cross section, and which have openings 6 and 6 at their end portions.
These openings are secured over the open ings in the flue chambers, as shown in Fig. 2. The flues 12 are arranged alternately on opposite sides of the units, the lowest flue con necting the openings 6 of the flue chambers a and o, and the flue 12 next above in the series connecting the openings 7 of the flue chambers c and e, and so on in the series, so that the heated products of combustion. take the course of the arrows shown in Fig. 2.
The flue chamber 13 of the top unit is provided with a suitable chimney 1%. The form of the flues 12 may be variously modifled in carrying out this invention, and the openings 6 and 7 may be located in various positions in the walls of the flue chambers as they are not necessarily placed midway between the back and front as shown.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the flue inlet 7 and the flue outlet 6 are arranged out of line wit-h each other, and battle plates or partitions 15 are provided in the flue chamber, to form a tortuous passage in it for the products of combustion, in order that the ovens or heating chambers may be heated more eflectivelv.
I claim as my invention 1. A heater constructed of a series of superposed units, each unit being formed separately and the units intermediate of the top and bottom units being similar to each other, each intermediate unit comprising a rectangular flue chamber having side portions which project above its top and which support the flue chamber next above it, an oven being formed by the said side portions between the two flue chambers, each said oven having a separate door opening com municating with the atmosphere, each said flue chamber having also an inlet opening and an outlet opening, and connecting flues secured to the said flue chambers and connecting the outlet opening of each flue ch amber with the inlet opening of the flue chamber next above it.
2. A heater constructed of a series of superposed units, each unit being formed separately and the units intermediate of the top and bottom units being similar to each other, each intermediate unit comprising a flue chamber having side portions which proj ect above its top and which support the flue chamber next above it, an oven being formed by the said side portions between the two flue chambers and having a door opening which chamber with the inlet opening of the flue communicates With the atmosphere, each said chamber neXt above it. 10 fine chamber having also an inlet opening L1 testimony whereof I aflix my signature and an outlet opening and having also baflie in the presence'of tWo Witnesses.
plates which form a tortuous passage in it WILLIAM BELL WHITE. between its said openings, and connecting \Vitnesses:
fines secured tothe saicl flue chambers and H. B. CRnnKE,
connecting the outlet opening of each fine ELsIE L. SPELLMAN.
