To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES O. Tow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of Boone and State'of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Speed-Governors for Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to speed governors for engines, and more particularly to the class of speed control valve reversing governors for turbine engines. I
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a governor of this character wherein, on the speed of the turbine exceeding a predetermined rate, the governor automatically operates to reverse the valve mechanism of the turbine, thereby regulating the speed of the latter during the working of the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a governor of this character where in the construction thereof is novel in form so that any possibility of the raising of the turbine above a predetermined ratio of speed is eliminated and also should the speed drop below a predetermined ratio the governor will become active, thereby maintaining the speed of rotation of the turbine at substan tially a predetermined rate. A further object 'ofthe invention is the provision of a governor of this character 1 wherein the construction thereof assures the positive operation of the same with accuracy so as to automatically control the valve mechanism of a turbine for regulating the speed of the latter.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a governor of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View through a governor constructed in accordance with the invention for operating the valve rod of a turbine;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a portion of a governor shaft which is operatively connected with a turbine to be driven thereby and B a valve controlling rod for the valve mechanism of the turbine, the governor shaft being enveloped within a tubi-form column 5 which is fast to or integral with the turbine casing as usual, and this governor shaft is journaled in a bushing 6 which is fitted within the upper end of the column 5, the latter being formed with a substantially pear shaped housing or casing 7 which, at its smaller end, has rising therefrom spaced bearings 8 supporting a worm shaft 9 for a purpose presently described.
Formed on the governor shaft A at its upper end are pivot ears 10 to which are pivoted governor arms 11 formed with weighted spherical free ends 12, while at the pivoted ends of the arms 11 are formed integrally therewith clutch jaws 13 for a purpose presently described. Journaled in the smaller end of the housing or casing '7 are the hollow outer stud shafts and inner solid stud shaft 14 and 15, the latter shaft being journaled within the shaft 141 and is formed at its lower end with a clutch disk 16 working within a cup shaped clutch head 17 formed on the outer shaft 1%, the latter at its opposite end being formed with a large pinion 18, while the shaft 15 is formed with a small pinion 19, and these pinions engage with the respective large and small gears 20 and 21 respectively on the worm shaft 9 which, at one end, is formed with a worm thread 22 meshing with a worm segment or gear 23 fixed to a crank arm 24 journaled in a bracket 25 on one of the bearings 8, and this crank arm 2st has pivoted thereto the valve rod B, as shown, so that on the rotation of the worm gear 23 the rod B will be moved in one direction to shift the valve gear mechanism of the turbine and on the reverse rotation of the worm gear 23 the valve rod B will be moved in the opposite direction for the reversing of the valve mechanism of said turbine.
The clutch jaws, 13 protrude into the clutch head 17 so as to alternately engage with the clutch surface of. the head 17 or the clutch surface of the clutch disk 16, and in this manner reversing the rotation of the Worm shaft 9, the jaws 13 being automatically shifted into such engagement through the movement of the governor arms 11 which are controlled by the speed of rotation of the governor shaft A operated by the turbine so that the latter can be maintained at a substantially predetermined speed in its operation as will be clearly obvious.

A governor of the character described comprising a rotary driven governor shaft, reversibly driven gear trains, governor arms supported on the shaft and controlled by the speed of the latter, clutch jaws on the arms, companion clutch members alternately engagedby the jaws and connectedwith the gear trains, and a shaft operated by the gear trains for reverse rotation of said shaft.

6. A governor of the character described comprising a rotary driven governor shaft, reversibly driven gea trains, governor arms supported on the shaft and controlled by the speed of the latter, clutch jaws on the arms,
companion clutch members alternately e11 gaged by the jaws and connected with the gear trains, a shaft operated by the gear trains for reverserotation j of said, shaft, a valve rod operating gear actuated by the last. named shaft, worm threads on the gear and last named shaft for meshing engagement with each other, a housing for the gov ernor shaft and arms, and a support for the gear trains and last named shaft.
