To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARmsA. SI-IERWIN, citizen-of the United States, residing at Muskogee, in the county of Muskogee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Locks, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had the-rein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvement in door locks, and more particularly to a lock ofthe type that is placed in a'mortise or cutout portion inthe edgeof a door.
The object of the invention is to produce a comparatively simple and eflicient lock that is positive in action and durable in construction.
With this and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

-A weight 13, provided with a lower fiat edge 14:, is pivotally mounted, at 15, within the casing 1, so that this weight will always cause the latch-bolt 11 to be extended as shown in Fig. 1 to retain the door upon which my lock is positioned in a locked position within the frame although aperson can easily grasp either one of the knobs 3 and move the latch-bolt into the casing 1 to permit the door to be opened, providedthe swinging latch 16 is not moved into theslot 17 of the latch-bolt and into the socket 18 of weight 13, as shown in dotted lines in'Fig. 1 for locking'the latch-bolt from being moved through the medium of the' knobs 3; this swinging latch 16 is pivotally mounted, at 19, within-the casing 1, and is engaged by the rotatable sleeve 20, which sleeve 20 is provided with lug 21, which lug 21 is adapted to engage and'be positioned directly under the swinging latch, as shown in Fig. 12, when the latch is moved into a locked position for causing the latch-bolt to be held in a locked position for preventing the door from being opened through the operation of the 'knobs 3.
The sleeve 20'is provided with a squared hollow body, and in this squared body is permanently mounted the stationary key 22; by rotating key 22 thatv has its outer end placed in'the room, the lug 21 can be caused to engagethe swinging latch (see Fig. '12) andforce-the outer hookedor angle end of the swinging-latch up through aperture 17 ofthe latchsbolt 11. holding the latch-bolt in the locked position as aforesaid; by rotating the sleeve "20 to the position shown in Fig. 1,
the swinging latch 16 will be released, permitting the latch-bolt to be freely operated through the action of the operator rotating one of the knobs 3.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 12, l eliminate the use of weight 13 and in place thereof, 1 mount, at 23, a spring 24, which spring 24 is provided with an angle end 25 that extends through an elongated slot 26 in the latch-bolt 27 of this embodiment, the spring, by reason of being passed over the securing means 23, will at all times exert an outward stress upon the latch-bolt 27, caus ing the same to be projected, as shown, suflioiently to lock the door upon which my lock is positioned. Other than the spring 2%, this embodiment is similarly constructed to the embodiments illustrated in 1 and 2.
The lock-bolt device of my lock comprises the sliding lock-bolt.- 28 that is provided with an elongated, horizontal apertur 29, near its front end, and through this aperture 29 extends a fastening pin 30. Near the inner or rear end of the lock-bolt 28 is a key receiving slot 31, and on the upper edge of the lock-bolt 28, at is formed a lug. A socket 33 is formed on the inner end of the lock-bolt, and this socket is adapted to receive the fixed horizontal pin or bar 34, which bar 84 is at all times positioned in the socket 35 on the inner end of the stationary bolt-plate 36, which bolt-plate 36 has an aperture 37, and through which aperture 37, pin 30 extends for holding the boltplate 36 in a fixed position. i
A pivotally mounted bolt-plate or tumbler 38 is positioned parallel to the lock-bolt 28 (Figs. 1 and and the pin 30 extends through the aperture 39 to tumbler 38. The tumbler 38 is pro -ided upon its upper edge with a horizontal laterall -extending lug or finger 40, which lug or finger 40 is normally placed in front of the lug 32 on the lock bolt 28. The stationary bolt-plate 36 is positioned between the pivotally rnounted tum-- bler 38 and the lock-plate 28. as clearlv shown in Figs. 2 and 13. l
The detachable and portable key &1 is positioned in the apertures 42 oi? the casing'l. and this key is pr vided with a l'shaped socket 43. The operation of the lock-bolt device is as follows: The key 41 having been placed in the apertures 4-2 (see Figs. 2 and 13), the key is turned to place the laterally extending lug 4st of bolt-plate in the T- shaped aperture e3 of the key (Fig. 13) one side of the key riding over the sides of the lock-bolt 28 forming the socket 81, and the other side of the key riding under the lower edge of the pivotally-gnounted bolt plate 38. raising the bolt-plate (Fig. 18) so as to cause the extension 40 to be placed above the lug 32 on the lock-bolt 28, and as rotarv movement is continued to be imparted key 41, he keywill force the lock-bolt outwardly, and when the key has assiuned the 1 ,eaaeea position shown in Fig. 2, the extension 4L0 on bolt-plate 38 will drop behind the lug 32 and thereby securely retain the lock-bolt 28 in its extended position, until the portable key 411 is again inserted in the apertures 42 and the key is rotated in the reverse direction for reversing the action returning the lock-bolt into the casing, so to speak, as shown in Fig. l, for unlocking the lock so far as the lock-bolt device is concerned.
In Fig. 10, I have shown the face-plate L5 that is usually placed on the inside of a door; the aperture l6 receiving the pintle Z; the aperture 47 receiving the fixed key 22, and the aperture .8 receiving the key d1.
The keeper shown in Fig. 1 is of the ordinary structure, and since it is common to the art, it needs no specific description.
A transverse pin as is formed upon the casing 1 for supporting the sliding lock-bolt in an operable position.
I reserve the right to make such alterations and changes to my invention as will be obvious to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates and as shall fairly fall within the scope of the append ed claims.
What I claim is:
1. In av lock of the class described, the combination with a casing, of a latch-bolt slidably mounted upon said casing, means for normally holding said latch-bolt in an extended position, a pintle extending through said casin a sleeve mounted upon said pintle, a link pivot-ally mounted within said casin said link provided with a cut-out portion formed upon its upper endand with a. laterally-extending lug projecting from one side thereof, and means pivotally connecting the lower end of said link to the inner end of said latch-bolt, said sleeve on the pintle provided with a depending primary finger engaging said log of the link, said sleeve also provided with an auxiliary, depending finger positioned in the, cut-out portion of said link and normally engaging said link. 2. In a lock of the class described, the
combination with a casing, of a. latch-bolt s'lidably mounted upon said casing, said latch-bolt provided with an aperture, means for normally retaining said latch-bolt an extended POSlll-l011,-II18ZLI1S for drawing said latch-bolt into said casing, a swinging-latch pivotally mounted in said casing and provided with an angle end adapted to be positioned in the aperture of the latch-bolt for locking the latch-bolt upon said casing, and means for pivoting said swinging latch for in oving the same to a locked position.
3. In a lock of the class described, the 7 combination with a casing, of a sliding latch-bolt carried by said casing, means for retaining said latch-bolt in an extended position upon said casing, means for moving said latch-boltinwardly upon said casing, a
swinging latch cooperating with said lat-chbolt and adapted to hold said latch-bolt in a locked position upon the casing, a sleeve provided .with a hollow body pivotally mounted upon said casing, said sleeve provided with a lug adapted to engage said swinging latch and hold the latch in a locked position, and a key positioned in said hollow sleeve for operating the same for actuating the swinging latch.
4:. In a lock of the class described, the combination with a casing, Of a lock-bolt slidably mounted upon said casing, a pivotally-mounted bolt-plate positioned parallel to said lock-bolt, said lock-bolt provided with a lug, said pivotally-mounted boltplate provided on its upper edge with a laterally-extending lug adapted to fit in front of the lug on the lock-bolt, a stationary boltplate provided with a laterally-extending 'lug positioned between said lock-bolt and said pivotally-mounted bolt-plate, and akey adapted to pass by the lug on said stationary bolt-plate and engage the lower edge of said pivotally-mounted bolt-plate for re ceiving the same and removing the laterallyextending lug thereof from engagement with the lug on the lock-bolt, for releasing the lock-bolt and permitting the key to slide the lock-bolt upon the casing.
5. In a lock of the class described, the combination with a casing, of a lock-bolt device in said casing, said lock-bolt device comprising a sliding bolt, a pivotally mounted plate and a stationary plate positioned between said bolt and pivotallymounted plate, said stationary plate provided with a laterally-extending lug for preventing fraudulent operation of the bolt device, said pivotally-mounted plate and said bolt provided with means for normally preventing the bolt from sliding upon the casing, and said bolt provided with a socket for receiving a proper key for permitting the key to adjust the bolt upon the casing and at the same time operate the pivoted plate for allowing of the releasing of the bolt for permitting the operation thereof.
6. In a lock of the class described, the combination with a casing, of a lock-bolt device carried by said casing, said lock-bolt device comprising a slidable lock-bolt, said slidable lock-bolt provided near its forward end, lwith an elongated aperture, and at its rear end with a socket, and with a key re ceiving socket in its lower edge, a stationary plate positioned parallel to said bolt, said stationary plate provided with an aperture registering with the elongated aperture of said bolt and also provided, at its rear end, with a socket, a pin carried by said casing and positioned in the socket of said stationary plate and normally positioned in the socket on the end of the bolt, a pivoted boltplate provided at its forward end with an aperture registering with the elongated aperture in the bolt, fastening means extending through the forward registering aper tures of the bolt, stationary plate and pivoted plate, means on the stationary plate for preventing a fraudulent key from operating the bolt device, and means on the bolt and the pivoted plate cooperating for normally preventing sliding movement of the bolt.
