SOLDIERS PROTECTOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BLAZEJ JEzowsKI, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Midland, in the county of Midland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldiers Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a bullet guard adapted for flatly folding when not in use and taking up but little room is easily transported, while the device may be quickly set up for use to protect soldiers while firing upon the enemy from the field of action.

A further object of the device is to provide a folding shield of bullet proof material adapted to be carried and readily set up for warding 0H bullets, the device presenting bullet deflecting surfaces toward the line of fire of the enemy and adapted for supporting a soldier above the ground for readily firing through the device at the enemys lines.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device set up for use;

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the parts illustrated in slightly different positions;

My device being designed as a bullet shield broadly consists of bullet proof or armor plates 10 and 11 connected together by hinges 12, each plate having V-shaped excisions 12 at the forward hinged edge of the device adapted for forming firing ports.

The plate 11 is larger than the plate 10 and is positioned uppermost when the de vice is in use. A leg 14 is provided at each forward corner of the device being in the form of a strip of the same material from which the armor plates are constructed, the said legs being hinged as at 15 to the for- Specification of Letters Patent.

ward edge ofv the upper plate 11 and being substantially of a width corresponding to the reduction in size between the plates 10 and 11 at the adjacent end of the device. The legs 14 are adapted to swing downwardly for positioning upon the ground such as 16, in a. substantially vertical position when the device is set up for use with the bottom plate 10 forwardly and upwardly inclined and with its rear edge 17 resting upon the ground.

Rear legs 18 of the same width as the front legs 14, but of much greater length, are foldably connected by means of hinged plates 19 with the opposite rear corners of the plate 11. Each hin ed plate 19 is rectangular and connected Ty a hinge 20 with the plate 11 with an adjacent side connected by means of a hinge 21 with an end of one of the rear legs 18.

The device is readily folded in its closed formation with the plates 10 and 11 flatly engaging each other and at which time the legs 14 are folded up against the plate 11, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, while the hinged plates 19 and legs 18 will be inwardly folded for contacting the inner face of the plate 11 and overlying the closed legs 14 as indicated in Fig. 6. When the device is desired for use, the rear legs 18 are swung downwardly and resting upon the ground 16 and supporting the upper plate 11 downwardly forwardly inclined while the lower plate 10 will be positioned at the opposite inclination supported by the front legs 14 as heretofore described. The hinged plates 19 flatly engage beneath the plate 11 forming a support for the legs 18 and it will be evident that a soldier may rest upon the lower plate 10 beneath the upper plate 11 and fire through the ports 13 upon the enemy while oncoming bullets which hit the inclined armor plates 10 and 11 will be defiected without injuring the soldier in charge of the device.

The hinged plates 19 may be unfolded as well as the rear legs 18 when desired for bringing the said hinged plate and rear legs in the same plane as the armor plate 11, the said hinged plates 19 providing an easy manner of hingedly connecting the rear legs to the plate 11 for permitting the employment of the device in the manner noted. A great number of these devices may be packed together when folded without taking up a great amount of room and it will be seen that the inclining of the lower plate 10 elevates the soldiers body above the ground when firing through the ports 13 which is often, advantageous in operating a rifle or machine gun.

What I claim as new is 1. A protector comprising armor plates hinged together at their forward edges with excisions in the plates forming firing ports positioned above the ground when the device is set up for use, legs hinged to one of said plates adjacent the forward corners of the device adapted for resting upon the ground in substantially vertical positions, and legs hingedly connected adjacent the rear corners of the uppermost plate adapted for resting upon the ground with the said plates separated in their open operative positions.

2. A protector comprising armor plates hinged together at their forward edges with excisions in the plates forming firing ports positioned above the ground when the device is set up for use, legs hinged to one of said plates adjacent the forward'corners of the device adapted for resting upon the ground in substantially vertical positions, hinged plates shiftably connected to the op posite sides of the uppermost armor plate adapted for lateral swinging movement, legs hinged to said hinged plates adapted for supportingly positioning beneath the upper armor plate with the hinged plates in flat engagement therebeneath when the device is set up for use with the free ends of said last named legs resting upon the ground adjacent the rear end of the device.

3. A protector comprising an upper armor plate having excisions at the forward edge thereof, a lower armor plate of less'width than the upper plate having excisions in its forward edge adjacent the excisions of the upper plate and therewith forming firing ports, hinged connections between the forward edges of said plates, front and rear legs at each side of the device of a width equal to the difference in dimensions between said armor plates, hinged connections between said front legs and the forward corners of the upper plate and hinged plates hinged between said rear legs and the rear corners of the upper plate whereby the rear legs are adapted for positioning beneath the upper plate when the device is set up for useand for overlying the forward legs adjacent the inner face of the upper plate with the armor plates in fiat contact with each other.

4. In comblnatlon, two armor plates hingedly connected together having a firing port at the forward end of the device, hinged legs at the forward end of the device adapted for engaging the ground with the lowermost plate in an inclined position when the device is set up for use and folding rear legs attached to the other plate adapted for resting upon the ground with said last named plate positioned at an opposite inclination from that of the lower plate.
