To all @1J/tom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, lNlATTHEW J. SLoAN and HUGH H. l/VIGGINS, citizens of the United States, residing at Arch Creek, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Oilers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in saw oilers, and particularly hand saw Oilers.
The principal object of the invention is to arrange an oil reservoir within a cutaway portion of the handle, the reservoir being provided with Va discharge opening in its bottom arranged in vertical alinement with the saw blade and has cooperating therewith a spring-pressed needle valve disposed vertically through the reservoir and orovided with a cam actuating lever wherey the valve may be opened or closed to permit of predetermined quantities of oil to be discharged on both sides of the saw blade to eectively lubricate the saine while it is being used in sawing.
A further object of the invention is to cover and maintain the reservoir'within the handle cut-away portion through the medium of side plates that are secured to the opposite sides of the handle and saw blade, the upper edges of the side plates being ex-A tended above the reservoir and provided with a slide plate adapted to be slid into position over the filler cap of the reservoir and the valve actuating lever, whereby the same will be protect-ed and at the same time give the device a sightly appearance.
ith these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the appended claims.,

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of our improved construction of saw oiler.

Similar characters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the accompanying drawings and the following description.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral l represents the saw handle which is cut away at its upper forward portion on the lines 2 and 3 to provide a recess or pocket for the reception of all Oil or lubricant reservoir t. rIhe lower portion of the handle below the reservoir is provided with a kerf intermediate the'lower edge of the handle forthe reception of the lower portion of the saw blade 5. The upper portion of the saw blade extends upwardly and `bears against the forward edge of the reservoir.
As shown, the reservoir is of substantially rectangular construction and the rear wall 6 thereof is flat and bears against the vertical wall of the cut-away handle portion, while the forward edge of the reservoir converges outwardly, as indicated by the numeral 7. The reservoir is provided at its top with a filler opening 8 which is cio-sed by a `filler cap 9 threadedly connected toA 10 surrounding the l the upstanding collar filler opening.
TheV reservoir is provided in its bottom with a discharge opening 11 which. is surrounded with an upwardly extendingbearing sleeve 12, the inside ydiameter of which is slightly larger than that of the discharge opening l1 and at the juncture of the larger opening of the discharge opening is formed a beveled valve seat 13. The bearing sleeve 12 is provided with laterally extending inlet openings 14 which communicate -with the valve seat 13. Slidably mounted within the bearing sleeve 12 is a vertically disposed needle valve 15, the upper end of which is non-circular, as indicated by the numeral 16, and is slidably disposed through a bushing 17 threaded into the top of the oil reservoir. One side of this non-circular portion 16 is provided with a groove orchannel 17 which when the valve stem is moved upwardly will serve to provide an air vent for the oil reservoir to facilitate a free flow of the lubricant therefrom, and when the valve stem is moved downwardly the air vent will be closed, thus effectively preventing a further discharge or leakage of the lubricant.
The valve 15 is provided with a fixed collar 18 between which and the bushing 17 is positioned an expansible spring 19 which serves to normally maintain the needle valve in closed position upon the valve seat 13 and thus prevent the escape of the lubricant to the saw blade. The upper end of the valve l5 has pivotally connected to it a cam actuating lever 20, the inner end adj acentits pivotal connection with the valve rod l5 being curved as indicated by the numeral 21, so that when the cam lever is moved upwardly to a vertical position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, the valve rod l5 will be moved upwardly suiiiciently to permit of the discharge of the oil from the opening 11 onto the opposite sides of the saw blades.
The opposed sides of the -lrerf in the saw handle which receives the saw blade are provided with opposed grooves 2v2 that are disposed in vertical alineinent with the di"- charge opening l1 in the bottoni of the reservoir, whereby as the oil is discharged from the reservoir, it can freely and readily pass down through the grooves 22 on opposite sides of the saw blade.
Arranged on opposite sides of the reservoir are side plates 23 which are connected to the saw handle and the saw blade through the medium of screws 2li, the forward ends of these plates being converged inwardly to iit the forward converged edge 7 of the oil reservoir and then extended forwardly in parallel overlapping relation on opposite sides of the saw blade and held in this position through the medium of the screws 24.
The upper edges of the side plates are eX- tended above the top of the oil reservoir and are provided in their opposed edges with grooves or channels 25 for the reception of a slide plate 2G which is adapted to be slid into position over the filler cap and the cam actuating lever upon the top of the oil reservoir. The rear end of the slide plate is provided with a transversely extending bead 27 that is adapted to lockingly engage recesses 2S formed in the upper edge of the saw blade. This slide plate 26 is made of resilient metal so that when it is desired to slide it forwardly from over the top of the reservoir, the bead 28 can be sprung out of one recess and moved forwardly into engagement with the other, thus locking it in an open position as well as a closed one.
From the foregoing it will be seen these side plates cover the reservoir, iiller opening and valve actuating means against possible injury and at the saine time give a sightly appearance to the handle.
We claim 1. A lubricating handle for hand saws Copies of this patent may be obtained for comprising a saw handle having a cutaway portion, a lubricant reservoir mounted within said cutaway portion a filler opening in its top, a iiller cap for said opening, said reservoir being provided in its bottom with a discharge opening, a
needle valve disposed vertically through said reservoir for controlling the opening and closing of said discharge opening, means connected to the upper end of said needle valve for actuating it, side cover plates arranged on opposite sides of and inclosing said reservoir and rigidly secured to said saw blade and handle, the upper edges of said side cover plates projecting above the top of said reservoir and provided in their opposed faces with grooves, a slide plate mounted within said grooves and adapted to normally cover and protect said filler cap and valve actuating means, and means for retaining said slide plate in open or closed position.
2. A lubricating handle for hand saws comprising a saw handle having a cut-away portion, a lubricant reservoir mounted within said cut-away portion and provided with a iller opening in its top, a filler cap for said opening, said reservoir being provided in its bottom with a discharge opening, a needle valve disposed vertically through said reservoir for controlling the opening and closing of said discharge opening, a cam lever pivoted to the upper end of said needle valve to bear on the reservoir for actuating said needle valve, side cover plates arranged on opposite sides of and inclosing said reservoir and rigidly secured to said saw blade and handle, the upper edges of said side cover plates projecting above the top of said reservoir and provided in their opposed faces with grooves, a resilient slide plate mounted in said grooves and adapted to normally cover and protect said filler cap and valve actuating cam lever, and a bead formed on the forward end of said slide plate and adapted to selectively and lockingly engage recesses in the upper edge of the saw blade to retain the slide plate in Y open or closed position.
