larly to those employed for use in connection I with wood and metal workers hand saws. The main object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple oiling device which may be inexpensively and expeditiously manufactured. i
Tn carrying out the above end, a further object is to provide a removable oil receptacle and a pivoted retaining plate for securing the'same in position, and to provide the oil receptacle witha removabletop likewiseheld in position by the retaining plate.
Yet another object is to provide an extremely simple yet hightly e'flicient valve and packing for the stem thereof. f
With the above and minor objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein;

In the embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, H represents a saw handle of the type commonly employed in connection with most forms of wood working hand saws, and some forms of metal working saws, said handles comprislng the usual body or attaching portion'B, and hand hold 71. in the rear thereof, the rear edge of the body B being here shown as lying in an upright plane. The usual saw blade S is secured within the slit 8 formed The rear portion of the body B is provided with a rectangular recess It which opens through the rear edge ofsaid body,
one side of said recess being here shown in the form of a cover plate 1, which is inset in one side of the body and secured in position by screws 2. Removably positioned in the recess R, is a rectangular oil receptacle 3 whose rear side is closed by a removable cover 4-, said cover being here shown as having aninwardly extending flange 5 between which and the adjacent edges of the receptacle 3, a rectangular packing gasket 6 is located. The frontwall of the receptacle 3 is preferably rounded outwardly at its intermediate portion as indicated at 7 and provided with an oil discharge opening 8, said opening being normally closed by a flexible valve disk 9 carried by the forward end of a horizontal valve-stem 10, the latter passing slidably through an opening 11 in the cover 4: and having a suitably shaped operating'head or knob 12 on its rear end, a packing gasket 13 being preferably interposed betweensaid head and the cover as clearly seen in the drawings.
The flexible disk 9 is normally forced forwardly into the portion 7, constituting a valve-seat, by a coiled spring 14 which surrounds the stem 10 and bears at its forward end against a stop pin 15 which extends through said stem, the rear end of said spring bearing against a washer 16 between which and the cover 4-, a flexible packing disk or washer 16 is interposed, said disk or .washer being preferably though not necessarily,'formed of cork. By this construction and arrangement of parts, it will be seen that the spring 14: acts not only to retain the valve 9 in active position, but forces the packing washer 17 into binding contact with the cover f thereby compresshandle connecting the upper ends of the hand hold 72. and the body 13. The plate 18 is here shown as provided, on its inner edge, with a notch 21, the walls of which are out of contact with the packing washer 13 and the head12. When the parts are assembled the plate 18 forces the removable cover 4: tightly upon the receptacle 3 against the compressible quantities of the packing gasket 8, thereby preventing leakage of oil. When, however, it is necessary to remove the receptacle 3 or merely to remove the cover thereof for the purpose of filling said receptacle. it is simply necessary to swing the attaching plate 18 to the position shown in dotted lines in-Fig. 3, in which position, the entire receptacle or the cover thereof may be removed.-
VVhen it is desired to lubricate the saw S the head 12 is pulled rearwardly thereby unseating the valve 9 and allowing oil to be discharged through the opening 8 into grooves 22 which are formed in the body B on opposite sides of the slit 8 therein as clearly seen in Fig. 5. By then holding the entire saw in the proper position, the discharged oil will run downwardly upon the blade thereof, thus effectually lubricating the same.
1 have described the recess R as having one of its sides closed by a removable cover plate 1,'since this is the most simple manner of forming said recess, but it is to be under stood that the device, as above described, might well be employed when the sides of the recess are formed by portions of the handle 'H.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that an extremely simple lubricating device has been employed, yet which has a number of advantageous features.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
-1. The combination with a saw handle having a recess in one side, of an oil receptacle in said recess, a removable cover plate closing the rear end of said receptacle, and a retaining plate attached to said handle and contacting with said cover plate whereby to retain the same in active position, said rece tacle havin a valved oil dischar e opening.
2. The combinatlon with a saw handle having a recess in one side, of an oil receptacle within said recess andhaving a valved oil discharge opening, a removable cover plate closing the rear side of said receptacle, and a retaining plate pivoted to said handle and contacting with said removable cover plate, whereby to retain the same in active position.
3. The combination with a saw handle having a recess in one side, of an oil receptacle within said recess and having a valved discharge opening, a keeper adjacent one side of the recess, and a retaining plate having one of its ends removably located in said keeper, its other end being pivoted adjacent the opposite side of said recess, said plate contacting with said cover plate whereby to retain the same in active position.
4. The combination with a saw handle having a recess formed in one side, of a removable oil reservoir within said recess, and having a valved discharge opening, a removable cover closing the rear side of said receptacle and means for simultaneously retaining said cover in position on the receptacle and for retaining said receptacle within the recess.
5. The combination with a saw handle, having a recess in one side, of an oil reservoir in said recess, a removable cover plate closing the outer end of the reservoir and designed to be forced into frictional contact therewith, and a plate pivoted to the handle, said plate being swung across said recess and into contact with the cover plate, whereby the latter is held in frictional contact with the reservoir.
6. The combination with a saw handle having a recess in one side, of an oil reservoir in the recess, a removable cover plate closing the outer end of the reservoir and designed to be forced into frictional contact therewith, a keeper adjacent one side of the recess, and a plate pivoted at the opposite side of the recess and extending across the latter and into the keeper, said plate contacting with the cover plate, whereby the latter is held in frictional fluid tight contact with the reservoir.
