Description

W. H. SHIPLEY.
BAG HOLDER.
APPUCATION FILED JULY 15. I918.
1,287,471; Patented Dec.10, 191s.
14 HIS/$175k an on WALTER H. SHIIPLEY, OF ST. ANNE, ILLINOISv BAG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedDec. 10, 1918'.
Application filed m 15, 1918. Serial No. 244,944.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TALTER H. SHIPLEY, citizen of the United States, residingat St. Anne, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 1
This invention relates to certainimprovements in bag holders and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby it may be employed with convenience and facility in connection with bags or sacks of'different sizes.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character provided with members engageable. with the mouth of a ba or sack for maintaining the same in a position to be readily filled together with means whereby, said members, may be adjusted with convenience and fa cility one relative to the other in order to permit the device to be employed in connection with bags or sacks of different sizes.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved bag holder whereby certain important advanta es are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a portion broken away of a bag holder constructed in accordance with an embodimentof my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of my improved holder as herein disclosed;
F ig. 3 is a view in top plan of my improved holder as herein set forth, and
big. 4: is a transverse sectlonal view illustrating the mounting of the slide upon the head.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings B denotes a base or platform of predetermined dimensions and which is provided at a marginal portion with an upstanding post or standard P. v
H denotes an elongated and substantially horizontally disposed head provided at one end' portion with the vertically directed opening 1 which snugly receives the post or standard P and which head is also adapted to be adjusted longitudinally of the post or standard as the occasions of practice may require. The head H at opposite ends of the-openi'ng l is provided with the depending arms 2 contacting with the side edges or faces ofthe post or standard P whereby the head H is effectively held against wabbling or rocking movement. The lower end portions of the arms 2 are connected by the transversely disposed beams 3 disposed across the opposite faces of the post or standard P and contacting therewith.
The rear face of the post or standard P is provided with a plurality of recesses or notches 4 in each of which is adapted to seat the lower or free end portion of a gravity pawl 5 carried b the head H and whereby said head H may be effectively maintained at different elevations as may be necessary. The outer face of the head it is provided with the longitudinally disposed. channel 6 extending the entire length thereof and in which is mounted for rectilinear movement an elongated slide 8 preferably of a length greater than the length of the head H. Secured to the outer face of the slide 8 and arranged adjacent an end thereof is an outstanding arm 9 and a similar arm 10 is secured to the outer face of the head H below the slide 8 and at the end portion of said head H remote from the arm 9.
The outer or free extremity of each of the arms 9 and 10 is rovided with a depending arm 11 and at the lower end portion of said arm 11 is a laterally directed and outstanding hook or enetratin member 12. Also coacting with each of the arms 9 and 10 is a plate 1 1 having a slot 15 through which the arm is directed and the lower end portion of said plate is provided. with a hook or penetrating member 16 extending in the same general direction as the hooks or members 12 hereinbefore referred to. The upper mar inal portion of each of the arms 9 and 10 is provided with a series of longitudinally spaced notches 17 in which the portion of the plate at the upper end of the slot 15 is adapted to seat in order to hold the plate 9 or 10 it will be self-evident that my imf proved device may be employed with bags or sacks of differentsizes.
' The use of my improved device in connection with bags or sacks of diiferent sizes is further facilitated by the slide 8 as this slide permits a relative adyustment of the arms 9 and 10.
As herein set forth movement is imparted to the slide 8 through the medium of the upstanding lever L. The lower end portion of the lever L is pivotally connected as at 18 with the outer end portion of an arm 19 and which arm 19 is pivotally engaged at its opposite end portion, as indicated at 20, with an end portion of the front beam The lever L is also pivotally engaged substantially midway its length. as indicated at 21 with the forward face of the slide 8. The operator, imparts the desired movement to the slide 8 by imparting the requisite pull 1 upon the upper end portion of the lever From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a bag holder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A holder of the class described comprising an upstanding post, a head slidably engaged therewith for movement in a vertical path, a slide carried by the head and movable in a horizontal path, a lever pivotally engaged intermediate its length with the slide, an arm pivotally engaged with the head below the slide an end portion of the lever being pivotally engaged with the arm, and bag engaging means carried by the head and slide.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALTER H. SHIPLEY. Witnesses:
