Improvement in Pipe-Vises.

CORNELIUS E. HAYNES, OF BOSTON, 'ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ISAAC NITED STATES- GARDNER, 2D, OF HLNGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-*VISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,727, dated July 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS, E. HAYNES,
of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Pipe-Vises, of which the folj be referred to.
To provide for gas-fitters and others a light portable vise, that may be readily operated and of simple construction, is the object of my invention, which consists in a bifurcated jaw provided with a screw-shank and moved to and from the stationary jaw by turning a nut placed in or at the top of the frame-work orblock containing the stationary jaw.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, Ais the frame-work or block provided with a rectangular opening, the two lower sides a a of which ,are intended to be serrated and form the stationary jaw B of the vise, the interior of the body of the vise being hollow from its base to its top, to allow of the passage, in a vertical direction, of a bifurcated jaw (J and its shank b, which is pro vided with a screw-thread and passes up through a cylindrical nut, D, set in a cylindrical opening in the top of the block A. The lower end of the cylindrical nut D is provided with a circular flange or enlargement, c, and the top of the nut is provided on its outside with a thread, over which is screwed a flat nut or head, E, which is prevented from turning independently by screw-pins d, by-which construction, when a wrench is applied to the head or nut E, the cylindrical nut D is revolved within the top of the stationary portion of the vise, thus causing the screw-shank b of the movable jaw to move to or from the stationary jaw, as required. G is the pipe to be out or provided with a screw-thread, this pipe being rigidly held between the two jaws B 0, both of which are intended to be serrated, to prevent the pipe from turning around therein when the cutting is being performed. The screw-thread on the outside of the top of the cylindrical nut D may be dispensed with, and
- it may be of square or polygonal form, and a hole of corresponding form and size may be made in a head, .9, to be fitted and properly secured thereon, in order that the nut D may be revolved when a wrench is applied thereto. (See Fig.3.) An opening may be made in the side of the frame-work leading to the stationary jaw B, (see Fig. 4,) in order to facilitate the placing of the required part of the pipe or rod between the jaws, and thus avoid the in convenience caused by entering the end of the pipe or rod and pushing it along to the required point.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire,
CORNELIUS E. HAYNES. In presence of- N. W. STEARNS, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
