OF FOLSOM, NEW MEXICO.
DOOR-LATCH.
To all whom z't-may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES D. FISCHER and SARAH ANN VERNoN,'citizens of the United States, residing at Folsom, in the county of'Union, State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches; and'we-do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which I it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in latches for doors, drawers and the like, and more particularly of-the type wherein the latch is retracted by pres sure exerted by the operators hand in grasping the handle of the door or drawer, without necessitating a rotative movement to retract the latch.
It is the object of our invention to provide a latch of this nature which is of sim ple and durable construction, which is capable of efficient and easy operation, and which may be associated with a door or other member to be secured, in a most ready manner.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out on the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure l is a sectional view taken transversely through a door, and showing one embodiment of our improved latch mechanism associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. .1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the latch mechanism.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the latch turning member.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates the body of a door, which is provided with a transverse passage for reception of the latch mechanism. 'Mounted inv this passagevis a tubular casing 6 having one end open and extended outwardly of the assage and through the door handle knob ,to which it is secured. The other end of the casing extends slightly past the inner face of the door, and has a closure wall 8 apertured to form a bearing for a latch stem 9 extending through the casing. A nut 10 is threaded Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
i i p I Application filed March 5, 1918. Serial No. 220,647.
on the casing and bears against the door to hold the casing therein. The latch stem extends outwardly of the casing and has a semi-circular latch plate 11 secured to its end by the screw 12 threaded longitudinally thereinto, the latch plate coacting with any suitable keeper member 13 for release therefrom upon rotation of the plate by its stem 9.
Forjrotating this stem by pressure of the hand in'grasping the knob 7 a casing 14 is slidably mounted in the casing 6 at its knob end and is held against relative rotation by longitudinal ribs 15 thereon mating with grooves 16 in the casing 6. One end of the casing 14 extends outwardly of the knob and carries a finger plate 17, and its other end is provided with a closure wall 18 apertured to form a bearing for the latch stem 9 and provided with a slot 19 extending from its bearing aperture for the reception of a thread rib 20 formed on the stem 9. The stem is provided adjacent the main casing wall 8 with an abutment shoulder 21 preventing longitudinal movement, and thus upon inward sliding movement of the casing 14 the latch stem is rotated to carry its plate 11 to 1 retracted position.
For normally holding the casing 14 outwardly in position to turn the stem 9 and for holding the stem in latching position, a spring 22 is disposed in the casing 14 and bears against the outer end of the casing and against a head 23 formed on the stem 9 within the casing.
A comparatively simpleiand readily manipulated latch device has thus been provided. It is noted that the casings and stem 9 form a complete assembled unit in conjunction with the knob7, and thus the device may be most conveniently associated with a door by inserting the casing 6 through the door passage, threading the nut 10 to clamp the casing in place, and then attaching the latch plate 11 by the screw 12.
What is claimed is;
1. A latch of the class described comprising a casing, a latch stem rotatably mounted in the casing, a latch member on the stem and a member slidably mounted in the casing and having screw thread connection with the stem to rotate it upon sliding movement of said member.
2. A latch of the class described comprising a casing, a second casing slidably mounted in the first, end closures for the abutting the casings, a stem journaled in the end closures and having screw thread connection With the slidable casing, a shoulder on thesteIn endclosure of the first named V.
casing, a head on the stem Within the slid able casing, and a spring in the slidable cas-M ing bearing against said head. p the class described comprising the combination With a door having a casing disposed in 3. A latch of the casing and bearing against thedoorto hold the casing therein, said latch stelnexstem.
