BARnEL-TArrrNG DEVI E.-
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HAMILTON B. SPEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley Springs, in the countyo'f Morgan, State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Tapping Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved bar-- rel tapping device, and an object of the invention is the provision of a device of this kind for tapping barrels either in vertical positions or upon their sides.
A further object is the provision of an improved barrel tapping device that can be used as a gage, whereby it is possible to ascertain the level ofthe liquid in the barrel.
A further object consists in an improved barrel tapping device for turning on and oil the liquid.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling with in the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a View inperspective of a barrel showing the improved tapping device and gage applied.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the barrel showing the tapping device and gage in full lines in a vertical position, and in two dotted line positions, one for drawing the liquid from the barrel, and one whereby the amount of liquid in the barrel can be ascertained.
F ig. 3 is avertical sectional view through the tapping device showing it applied to the end of the barrel which is in section. Referring more especially to the drawings ldesignates a conventional form of barrel, which in the present instance is disposed upon its side. A bunghole fitting 2 is fitted in a bung hole 3 of the end of the barrel, ad jacent the chines. This bung fitting 2 has a flanged end 4. The bunghole fitting 2 extends through an opening of the coupling 5, whereby the flanged end mav seat in the coupling. An elbow 6 is threaded into the coupling, thereby clamping the flangedend in place. A pipe section or tube 7 is threaded at 8 into theelbow. Carried by the upper end of the pipe section or tube 7 is a split Specification of Lettersv Patent.

pair of spaced upwardly and laterally eX-' tending lugs 12, between which on a pin 13 PatentedDec. 3, 1918 collar 9, the ears 10 ofwhich receive a bolt 11, for drawing the collar tight but removably to the upper end of the pipe section This collar is provided with a the contracted shank 14 of the cap or cover plate 15 is pivoted. The shank has a handle.
16. Projecting laterally and downwardly from the collar is a lug 17, between which and the handle 16 a spring 18 is interposed acting to normally hold the cap or'cover closed against the upper end of the pipe sec tion or tube 7. An angle plate 19 is secured in any suitable manner to the end of the barrel, substantially diametrically opposite the bunghole fitting. Pivoted upon a pin 20 carried by the angle plate is a member 21, provided with spaced forks 22 and a downwardly depending arm 23, the lug 2 1 of which is designed to contact with the end of the barrel to limit said forks in substantially lateralv horizontal position. These forks when so disposed straddle the pipe section or tube 7 thereby holding the same in a sub stantially vertical position. The flanged end of the bungholefitting is not clamped tight enough to prevent swiveling of the coupling 5. In other words the pipe section may be thrown or moved'pivotally toward one side or the other, to assume such dotted line positions as indicated in Fig. 2. When the pipe section or tube 7 is moved to the dotted line position a in Fig. 2 and the cover or cap 15 opened, the liquid in the barrel or other container may be drawn off into a receptacle, such as indicated. When the pipe section or tube 7 is moved to any position between the vertical position and the dotted line position a, for instance such as indicated at b, and then the cap or cover 15 opened, the
operator may ascertain the level of the liquid The invention having been set forth what isclaimed as new and useful is The combination with a container, of an the forks may strad vertically, means carried by and; depending outlet pipe comniunicatively sWiveled to the lower part of one end of said container and disposed normally vertically in parallelism :with said end, whereby said pipe may be swung laterally in either direction at all times in parallelism with said end, a forked member pivotally mounted on said end and adapted to operate said pipe to retain it from the pivoted end of the member and Copies of this patent may be obtained for b gravitation, whereby di e In testnnony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in thepresence of b two subscribing Witnesses.
