To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l. Junws R. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnace-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to doors for electric furnaces.
The primary object is to provide a furnace door equipped with an electrode-holder,
which is durable andwell adapted to its purpose and permits, nmnipulation of the electrode in a desirable manner.
A further objectis to provide an electrio furnace with an electrode-supporting door of the character indicated, which may be termed an auxiliary door, and to provide the furnace with a' main door for the same opening, said doors being mounted to swing out of the path of each other, so that either door may be used to close the door-opening,
It may be stated preliminarily that the construction herein described is particularly desirable in electric furnace construction wherein there is employed anauxiliary electrode adapted to be temporarily used in preliminarily heating the. furnace. that is, in heating the furnace until the bottom or wall-contacts become sufficiently conductive to carry the current, after which the auxiliary electrode may be withdrawn. In the construction illustratech the main door is retracted or moved to an inoperative position and the auxiliary door is motor] to the closed position and-serves to hold the auxiliary electrode in the furnace during the prelin'iinary heating operation, after which the auxiliary door is moved to the inoperative position out of the path of the main door, and'the main door is thereupon closed and 'the operation of the furnace proceeds,

The slide 22 is provided beneath the electrode with a transverse bearing 22? in which is journaleda shaft 23 which 'is "equipped with a pinion 23' which meshes with the rack 20. 'I he manner of use will be readily understood from the description given. To 'prepare the furnace for operation. the charge is introduced through the door A, while the main door 13 is in the elevated position and the auxiliary door C is in a position at one lateral side of the door-opening. lVhen the furnace is to be set in operation, the auxiliary electrode-holder is swung from the dotted position shown in Fig. 3 to a position parallel with the full-line position shown in Fig. 3; and by means of the hand-wheel 23" the pinion :23 is caused to operate on the arm 2-1 and shift the electrode-holder C to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3. In this movement, the shaft '23 moves out of the hooks 20 and the slide 22 passes on to the guides 20, so that when the electrodeholder C in the operative position it .will
be firmly held on the guides. The auxiliary electrode-holder C is then adjusted in the holder C until its inner end comes-in contact with the charge in the furnace. In the operation of swinging the door C to the c osed position, the switch comprising the arms 25 and 25" is thrown to the connecting position, thereby throwing theelectrode C into circuit with the wall-contact, or wallcontacts, of the furnace. In the operation, the current will pass from the main elecdome of the furnace to the auxiliai trode C, it being understood that in this operation the main electrode or electrodes are so adjusted as to afford arcs between their lower ends and the charge, so that the metal or material will be fused and form a pool at the bottom'of the furnaoefthus heating the.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for'clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be considered as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.

In means of the character set forth the combination with a furnace-walldprovlded with a door-opening, of a door a opted to said opening and mounted to be swung to a position removed from the opening, an extension carried by said door and provided with a guide and rack and equipped also with hooks an electrode-holder mounted on said guide an adapted to be disconnected therefrom at the outer end of the traverse, and a shaft journaled in said slide and equipped with a pinion working in said rack, said shaft adapted to engage said hooks and serve as a pivot for the electrode-holder.

In means of the character set forth the combination with a furnace-wall provided with a door-opening, of a, door adapted to said opening and mounted to be swung to a position removed from the opening, an extension carried b said door and provided with a guide on rack and equippedalso with hooks, an electrode-holder mounted on said guide and adapted to be disconnected therefrom at the outer end of the traverse, a shaft journaled in said electrode-holder and equipped with a pinion working in 'said rack, said shaft adapted to engage said hooks and serve asja pivot for the electrode-holder, and ineans for securing the electrode-holder in tilted position.

In means of the character set iorth, the combination with a furnace-wall, provided with a door-opening, of a door adapted to said opening and provided with an opening through which an electrode may extend, an extension detachably carried by said door and an electrode-holder movably mounted on said extension.

In means of the character set forth, the combination with a furnace-wall provided with a door-opening, of a door adapted to said opening and mounted to be moved to a position removed from the door-opening, means for circulating water through said door, regardless of the position of the door, and anelectrode-holdcr mounted on said door. 19. the combination with a door-opening, of a door adapted to said opening and mounted to be moved to a position removed from the opening, an inclined guide extending outwardly from said door, and an electrodeholder shiftably mounted on saidguide.

24. n means of the character set forth, the combination with a furnace-wall rovided with a door-opening, of a main oor and an auxiliary door adapted to close said opening, said doors having mountings adapting each door to be moved out of the path of the other door and said auxiliary door being equipped with electrode-holding means.

In means of the character set forth, the combination with a furnace wall provided with a door-opening, of a. main door adapted to close said opening, a mounting for said door adapted to carry the door to and support itin position above said dooropening, an auxiliary door adapted to close said door-opening, said auxiliary door equipped with electrode-bolt ing means, and a mounting for said auxiliary door adapted to carry the same to and support it in position at one lateral side of, said door opening.
