 The door is shown .appliedto the vertical wall of an electric it'urnace of circular horizontal crosssection. This wall comprises the usual steel shell 1 and firebrick lining 2, through which. the dooropening A is made. The frame A preferably comprises an annular casting which has an external flange 3 which is riveted to the shell 1. At

 The yoke B may conveniently comprise an angle-iron bent to the required form. To the flanges of this angle-iron, near the junction of the intermediate portion  7 with the oblique arms  7*, are secured pivot-lugs 12,

 The door B in the construction illustrated, comprises a frame 13 in which are suitably secured fire-bricks 14. The inner surface of the door presents a fiat face which rests against the annulus A forming the frame of the door-opening. The door opens'and closes by a vertical shifting movement, when the yoke 13 swung on the horizontal pivots B The pivotal conne tions B between the yoke and the door are above the center of gravity of the door, so that the door will always hang in a vertical The door is of sufficient weight to considerably more than overcome the counter-weights 11, so that the door will tend to slide downwardly along the outer face of the frame A of the door-opening and wedge itself firmly between the yoke B may "be disposed to lower the counterweighted end of the yoke and lift the door' B tothe elevated or open position. -The door may be supported in the open position by means of a link  17 which has its upper end pivotally connected with a lug 18 carried by one of the arms  7. The link  17 works through a loop or guide  19 secured to the body of the furnace, and is provided with a series of perforations  17, any one ofwhich may be caused to register with a perforation  19 with which the loop- 19 is provided. The link  17 may be held in adjusted position by means of a pin  20. 
 From the description given it will be understood that the door B may be shifted from the closed position shown in-full lines in Fig. 2 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 by simply depressing the foot-lever  16. A pin may then be passed through the perforation  19 of the loop and a registering perforation  17 of the link  17 to hold the door in open position. \Vhen the pin is removed, the door will automatically close, or fall of its own weight to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2; and in this operation the door will wedge itself firmly between the bearings of pivots B and the frame A of the door-opening, with which the door has sliding contact. If desired, the device C may be omitted, and the door may be opened by simply lifting upon the intermediate portion  7 of the yoke B. 
 It will be understood that the construction described is simple, durable, affords a close joint, and is largely free from danger of warpage. The door will close automatically when permitted to do so. and will firmly wedge itself in the closed position. While the improved door was primarily designed for use in connection with electric furnaces, it may be advantageously used for fire-chambers or heating chambers wherever desired. 
 The patent of 'Villiam K. Booth, No. 1,2 14 i-15, granted October 23, 1917. describes the use of an auxiliary electrode for use in the preliminary heating of an electric furnace. Such auxiliary electrode may extend either through an integral part of the furnace-wall, or through an auxiliary door. The present invention may be used either alone, or the improved door may be used in cooperation with another or auxiliary door in which is mounted an auxiliary electrode, as described in my co-pcnding application, No. 226,576 filed of even date herewith. 
 The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art. 
 What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination with a vertical furnace-wall provided with a framed charging door-opening, of a door-carrying member mounted to swing about horizontal pivots, and a door connected with said member by horizontal pivots which approach the plane of the face of the frame of the door-opening in the closing operation, said door having a rear contact surface adapted to make sliding contact with the face of the frame of the door-opening, said construction being such that the door will be forced against the face of the frame of the door-opening in the closing operation. 
2. The combination with a vertical furnace-wall provided with a door-opening, of 
ayoke supported on horizontal pivots which are parallel with the plane of the door-openmg and so disposed as to cause the intermediate portion of the yoke to describe an are which approaches the plane of the doorill) opening as the door nears the completely closed position, and a self-adjusting door suspended at its intermediate portion on the intermediate portion of said yoke said construction being such that the door will be forced against said wall by the action of said yoke when the door is closed. 
 3. The combination with a vertical furnace-wall provided with door-openings, of a yoke having an intermediate portion adapted to pass in front of the door-opening and having rearwardly-extending arms, pivotal connections between said arms and the wall of the furnace so disposed as to cause the intermediate portion of said yoke to approach the furnace as. the door nears the completely closed position, and a door suspended at its intermediate portion on said yoke and disposed between the inter mediate portion thereof and the wall of the furnace, whereby the door will be forced against the face of-the door-opening as it moves to the completely closed position. 
4. The combination with a furnace-wall provided with a door-opening disposed in a vertical plane, a door-carrying member having arms connected by horizontal pivots with the wall of the furnace at points in the rear of the upper portion of the door-opening, and a self-adjustingdoor suspended on said member and so disposed with relation thereto as to be forced into close contact with the wall as the door reaches the completely closed position. 
 5. The combination with a furnace-wall provided with a door opening, of a mounting carried by horizontal pivots so disposed relatively to said door opening as to cause portions of said mounting to describe an are which approaches the plane of the door opening as the mounting carries the door to its completely closed position, and a door having horizontal pivotal connections with said arc-describing portions of said mounting at an aXis slightly above the center of gravity of said door.
