T0 all whom 'it may concern Be it known that. I, ('izsAm-i Batiment, a subject of the king of Italy. residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllmois` have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu lllevating- Machines, of which tlu .following is a descrip tion.
Ny invention relates to mans for receiving granular material at one level and automatically raising the same and discharging itat a considerably higher level.
The object of my invention is to provide a. simple, convenient and reliable device of the kind described whereby material is taken from the receiving bin or level and discharged into the elevating mechanism proper by an auxiliary device'or loader arranged to operate automatically.and partially counter-lmlancc the weight of the moving part-s of the main elevating mechanism.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction. arrangement and combination `of parts herein shown and described and mor particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings for the purpose of illustration I have shown my improved mechanism as applied to a coal handling station,

'2 the storage binand 3 the receptacle for elevating the material to the storage bin adapted to move in substantially a vertical path controlled by the guides -1 and operated by suitable cable or other convenient means 5 attached to the receptacle and passing over the head pulley (l and thence to the winding mechanism 7. The receptacle 3 is provided with a discharge door 8 controlled by auxiliary guides 9. whereby the material in the receptacle is discharged into the storage bm 2 when the receptacle is raised to the proper elevation. all constructed and arranged in substantially the usual or any desired manner.
)ly improvement. comprises apparatus for receiving the material from the bin 1 and transferring the same to. and discharging the. same into the receptacle 3. ln the form shown the bin 1 is provided wit-h a hoppered bottom having a discharge opening 1() substantially at the apex of the hopper to permit the escape ot' material tlwrefrom. l closure l1 is provided for the opening 10 arranged to operate. in suitable guides 1'. at each side of the opening. suitable container 14 is also provided of suitable t'orm to tity beneath thc opening 10 and receive material from thel bin 1. A pair ot' guides Y 15--15 are provided one for each side of theI container for directing the movements of the container 14 and suitable mechanism is provided for moving the container along the guides 15 from the receiving position at thel opening 10 to a position for discharging the contents of the container into the receptacle 3 when the receptacle is at the' lower limitl of its movement. In the preferred form shown the container 14 consists of a substantially rectangular box having a discharge opening 16 in its lower side. A door 17 comprising substantially one wall of the container is pivotally mounted at the bottom of the opening 16 and provided with suitable side plates 18 adapted to partially inclose the adjacent sides of the container when the door 17 is closed and serving as side walls upon the door to form a trough and direct the material from the container 14 into the receptacle 3 when the door is opened as shown in Fi 1.v
Any suitale means may be provided for controlling the operation of the door 17. As shown a lug 19 is provided upon each plate 18' and a latA-h Q() is pivotally mounted upon the side wall of the container 14 adapted to engage the lug 1%) to hold the door closed. A spring 21 or other convenient means is also preferably provided for normally holding the latch'QO in engaging position. Suitable means are provided for disengaging the latch and permitting the door to open. As shown a ortion 22 of the latch 20 extends beyond t e pivotal connection 29 attaching the latch to the container 14 and an adjustable strop 23 is provided upon the guides 15 adapted to eni tainer reaches the upper limit of its inovement and disengage the latch from the lug 19, thus releasing the door 17.
A roller 28 is also provided upon each plate 18 adapted to cooperate with an auxiliary guide 29 positioned below the guides 15 to normally maintain the door in its closed position and to fully and positively close the same when t'lie container starts upon its return movement after discharging' the material into the receptacle It.
Any suitable means may be provided to move the container upon thefarins 15. the form shown a shaft 25 extends transversely of and is rotatably mounted at the lower'end of the guides 15 and a similar shaft 26 is mounted parallel to the shaft 25 at the upper end of saidl guides. llaeh shaft is provided with suitable sprocket wheels near its respective ends to carriY a. chain'27 extending between the shatts and the side walls ot' the container 14 are. rigidly secured in any suitable manner to the. respective chains 27. Then thusl arranged it is obvious that the container 1t will be moved upon the-guides. 15 to correspond to the direction of movement ot the shat't '26.
Suitable means are provided uponl the container 14 to engage the closurel 11 and operate rthe same. In the form shown a projection 30 is provided upon each Aside wall of the container and a pivotally mounted 'atch 31 is provided upon the closure 11 for each projection adapted to vengage the projection to lock the closure to the container. A pawl 32 is also pivotally mounted upon the closure 11 adapted to engage a statiopary block 33 upon the, guides 15 or oth/rscdnvenient stationary portion ot" the mechanism to hold the closurel in position before, and close. the opening 10. The continued movement of the container toward the opening r forces the closure out of position before the opening: and permits the material in the bin 1 to flowv by gravity Vhen the mechanism f `is operated to move the container from its position before the opening 10 the closure 11 moves with the container until the opening 10 is closed. When this poin't is reached the inclined face. 35 of the catch 31 engages a stationary member 3G thereby raising the catch 3 1 from the projection 30 and releasing the closure' 11 from the container, at
the same time the movement of the' pro- 3 reaches the lower limit ot its moveme At this point the stop 23 engages the por-` jection() permits the pawl 32 to fall into engagement with the block thereby positively locking the closure 11 in position be fore the opening 10.
Any suitable means may be provided to rotate the shaft 20 to move the container 14. In the form shown the winding` mechanism 7 employed tor operating the receptacle 3 is connected directly to the shaft .26 so that the movements of the container 11 will accurately correspond to, and partialliv countei-balance the movements ot the recep tacle The container 14 moves downward toward the opening 10 as the receptacle 3 moves upward tov discharge its contents into the storage bin and when the receptacle moves downward the container is moved from itsposition before the openingA 10 upn ward toward the receptacle 3 arrivingat its discharging' position when the ieeeilitael tion 22 of the latch 2() (listingraging the latch from the lug i9 aiid permitting' the door 1T to t'all open, and discharge the contents ot' the container into thereeeptaele it through the trough formed b v the door 1T and its side plates 18. In a device of the kind described, a bin having a discharge opening in its bottom, a vertically movable receptacle, in combination with al movable container arranged to move between said bin and said receptacle, and an operating means common to both the receptacle and the container for causing them to reach their respective limits of travel simultaneously.
3. In a device of the kind described, a bin having a discharge opening in its bottom, a movable receptacle, in combination with a movable container arranged to move in a direction substantially contrary to the movement of said receptacle between said bin and the receptacle, and an operating` means common to both the receptacle and the container for causin them to reach their respective limits o travel simultaneously.

In a device of the kind described, a bin having a dischar e opening in its bottom, a vertlcally mova le receptacle in combination with a movable container arranged to move between said bin and said receptacle, an operating means common to both the receptacle and the container formoving them simultaneously toward or from each other, and a means for automatically delivering the contents of the container to the receptacle when they reach the limits of their movements.

In a device of the kind described, a vertically movable receptacle, means for operating the same, and a bin having a discharge opening at its bottom, and a closure adapted to control the escape of material through said opening, in combination with a movable container, mechanism for moving said container between said discharge opening and said receptacle, means for automatically operating said closure to control thev discharge of material into said container and movable means upon said container for directing material from the container into said receptacle.

In a device of the kind described, a vcrti'ally movable receptacle. means for operating the same. and a bin having `a dischartfeiopeningr at its bottom and a closure adapted to control the escape of material through said opening. in combination with at? movable container, mechanism for moving said container between said discharge opening and said receptacle. means for automatically operating said closure to control the discharge of material into said container. and movable means upon said container adapted when closed to prevent the escape of material from said container and when open to direct material from said container into said receptacle.
