To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FINLY F. Josnrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hoisting apparatus.
My improved hoisting apparatus is especially adapted and designed by me for use as a coaling station, or coal loading device for cars, and I have shown it so adapted in the accompanying drawings, although it can be readily adapted for usein various other relations.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved hoisting apparatus in which the buckets are automatically charged. Second, to provide an im oroved hoisting apparatus in which the buckets are iu'itomatically discharged.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described inthe following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawin the hoist shaft 1 is preferably made up 0 suitable timbers connected by cross pieces, and provided with a roof, as 2. Suitable ways 3 are provided for the hoist bucket 4. The cable 5 is ar ranged over a suitable pulley 6 in the top of the shaft.
In. practice, 1 preferably employ two buckets connected to be alternately o erated, but as this arrangement will be wel understood, and as a description of one will clearly disclose my invention, I do not illustrate the second bucket herein.
At one side of the elevator shaft, I provide a supply hopper 7, the track 31 bcin laid across it so that the coal may be dumped into the hopper from a car, if desired. This track is also so positioned that a carto be loaded may he run into position thereon. The charge hop er 8 is located at one side of the supply l iopper to receive the coal therefrom. The bottoms 9 of the hoppers are preferably inclined and in the same plane so that the coal runs freely from the supply hopper into the charge hopper. The charge hopper is provided with an inlet door 10, which is arranged to reciprocate vertically through the bottom 9. The supply hopper is provided with a discharge door 11, which is also vertically movable. These doors are connected, preferably, by means of cables 12 and 13, which are arranged over gruidc rollers 14, sec Fig. 3, arranged above mu] below the some so that when one door is opened, the other is closed, thus permitting the charge hopper 8 to either fill or disharge accordingly as the inlet or discharge door is opened or closed. i
The discharge door 1.] is provided with an arm 15, which projects into the shaft to he engaged by the bucket 4- on its downward movement. so that the discharge door is opened by the bucket and the inlet door closed. On the upper end of the discharge door I pivot an apron-like chute 16, adapted. when in its extended position, to deliver into the bucket, see Fig. 1. h The door 11 is so arranged that its upper edge is in alinement with the bottom of the charge hopper to swing up to receive the bottom 19, as
S so that the coal runs from the bottom into 5 the bucket over the chute. 0n the hoisting movement of the bucket, it closes the discharge door 11 and opens the inlet door 10.
The chute 16 serves as a connection for the bucket to the door in closing the door. When the door is opened, or partially opened, the counterweight 1.7, which is rigiuly connected to swing with the door, bears against the way l8 for the door acting like an arm to preient the closing movement of the door on its pi rot so that the bucket engages the chute and lifts the door ll. When the door is in its closed position, the ways in are of such length that the counterweight can swing over the upper end thereof, thus allowing the chute to swing out of the way and retain it in the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, until the bucket again mmes downwardly engaging the projection 15 thereon and carrying the door downward. As the counterweight is fulcrurned .ver the ends of the ways 18, this downward movement swings the counterweight upward and the chute into its delivery or extended posi tion, as appears in Fig. l, and the counterweight, being rigidly connected to the door, as previously stated, and bearing against the way 18, the chute is held in its extended position.
I thus 'secure, in a simple and effective manner, mea s by which the bucket is automatically charged with a fixed quantity of material. I also preferably use, in this con nection, means for automatically discharg 1D the bucket. To accomplish this, 1 provide the bucket with a lunged bottom 19, which is held in its closed position by the pivoted latch 20 adapted to eiu age over the keeper 21 on the bottom of the bucket. The latch is held yieldingly in its engaging position by the spring 22. A reciprocating trip 23 is mounted on the bottom to engage the latch and release the bottom. This trip is mounted on suitable guides, as 24, and is arranged to engage the cam-shaped trip member 25 when the bucket reaches its discharging position, thus releits'in the bottom, allowing it to drop down to discharge the load. Thedischarge chute, or spout 26, is mounted on the pirot rod 27 and is adapted clearly appears in Fig. 2, the end of the chuteswineing out of the eleyator shaft to discharge into the conduit 32.
To automatically swing and retain the chute 26 in positim, I provide the same with a bail 28 which is engaged by the bucket. thereby lifting the chute into position to receive the load and support it and the bottom at the same time allowin it to swing down out of the way on the downward movement of the bucket. The cross-piece 29 of the bailis extended at each end to ngage the end ways 30, see Figs. 2 and 4, so that the bail is held in position to be engaged by the bucket. By these means, in a simple and cii'rctirc n'ianner, the parts are autos inatically brought into their discharging position and discharge the load so that the entire operation of charging and discharging of the bucket is automatic. I have not shown, hercin, the power means for hoisting the bucket. as such means will be readily understood by those skilled in. the art to which this invention relates.
.l. have illustrated and described my improved hoisting apparatus in detail in the form preferred by me on account of its structural simplicity and ccmiomy of operation. I am aware, however, that it is capable of consic'lerable variation Without departing from my invention, and I desire to be uiidcrstoml as claiming the same specificnlly, as illustrated, as well as broadly.
l loving thus described my invention. what I claim a-s new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

The combination with. a hoisting bucket; oi a supply hopper; a charge hopper to which said supply hop or is arranged to deliver, said hoppers raving inclined botton'is; a vertically slidin inlet door for said charge hopper arrange to reciprocate through the floor of the hoppers; a vertically sliding discharge door for said charge hopper: a connecting cable for the upper and lower 'ends of said inlet and discharge doors; guide rollers for said cables arranged so that when one door is opened the ot er is closed; an arm on said discharge door adapted to he engaged by said bucket as it descends, whereby said discharge door is opened and said inlet door is closed; a chute pivoted on the upper end of said discharge door adapted, when opened, to extend into said bucket; a counterweight for said chute and a way for said discharge door adapted to engage said counterweight on the o ening movement of said door whereby sai chute thrown into its extended position and held in engagement witlr'said bucket so that on its hoisting movement said discharge door is closed, said counterweight being adapted to swing over the upper end of said way and close said chute and release said discharge door when said discharge door reaches its closed position.
