Application filed January 2, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD M. HERBERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Vise, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to vises and has for an object the provision of an improved construction which may be used for gripping lightly objects of different shapes, and then by a manipulation of a lever tightening said grip.
Another object in view is to provide a vise which is designed to grip round objects especially and particularly a cable of comparatively soft wires so as to hold the same during a splicing or other operation.
A further object in view is to provide a vise which may be used not only for holding cables, but for firmly gripping pipes and irregular objects by a single movement of a tension member.

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary end view of a slightly different form of vise to that shown in Fig. 2, the same being formed with jaws especially adapted for receiving round or irregular shaped articles.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a support of any desired kind, as for instance a work bench, to which the base 2 of the vise is secured, by any suitable means, as for instance screws or bolts. The base 2 may be cast or stamped as preferred. The base is provided with upwardly curved end members 3 and 4 and a transverse central member 5 which merges into laterally extending projections 6 and 7..
The extension 7 is bent upon itself forming an end section 8 which acts as a guide for the vertical bar 9 of the movable jaw 10. An aperture 11 is provided in the section 7 whereby the bar 9 may freely move upwardly or downwardly. Extending from the transverse section 5 are stationary or fixed jaws 12, any desired number of these jaws may be provided, two pairs being Specification of Letters Patent.

shown, though one or more than two may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In operation a cable 13, or other article is placed in these jaws as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and then the jaw 2 dropped by gravity so as to lightly press against the cable, ever 14 is then brought from the dotted position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, whereby the cam 15 will engage some of the threads 16 of the bar 9 and move the bar 9 and jaw 10 downwardly so as to press against the cable 13. This form of vise is especially adapted for use in holding cables of different kinds, as for instance telephone cables, so that the ends may be in proper position for splicing.
From Figs. 3 and 4 it will be seen that the cam 15 is provided with a beveled or inclined entering section 17 which eoaets with the beveled end of the thread 16 so as to be absolutely sure of entering the space between said threads and thereby pulling downwardly 011 the movable jaw. In order to prevent the lever 14 from moving over too great a distance a depending lug 18 is provided on the extension 16 s shown articularly in Fig. 2. Lever 14 may bepivotally mounted in any desired manner, as for instance by the bolt 19 passing through the lever and through the extension 16. By providing this construction and arrangement of cam 15 and associate parts, a single movement will cause the jaw 10 to move to a closed position.
The vise as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, though especially adapted for cables, may be used for gripping other things, such as pipes, or other objects of any desired shape. lVhere the vise is intended for use largely as a pipe gripping device the jaws 12 are constructed as shown in Fig. 5, namely with teeth or shouldered portions 20 for gripping to a certain extent the pipe; thus the jaws and the remaining part of the vise could be cast or stamped as preferred. It is also evident that these jaws could be formed integral with the base 2 or independently thereof and rigidly secured thereto, the integral structure, however, being preferable as it is simple and strong. 7
\Vhat I claim is:
1. A vise comprising a base stamped from a single blank so as to provide end members, a transverse bar, a plurality of pairs of upstanding jaw members forming forked structures, a pair of opposite lateral extensions, one of said extensions being bent downwardly for forming a stop, said last men tioned extension having a slot extending therethrough, a movable jaw member ar ranged between said pairs of jaws, said movable jaw member having a depending bar extending through said slot, and means acting on said depending bar for causing the movable j aw to move downwardly for compressing an article in said pairs of jaws, said stop limiting the movement of said means.
2. A vise comprising a base formed with jaws, a forward extending section having a stop depending therefrom, a rearwardly eX- tending section having a slot formed therein, a movable jaw coacting with the first mentioned aw, said movable aw having a depending bar formed with transversely arranged teeth, said bar being positioned in said slot, a lever pivotally mounted on the forwardly projecting section, said lever having a transversely bent end, and a cam member extending longitudinally of said ends, said cam member coaoting with said teeth when the lever is moved in one direction for operating said bar and said adjustable jaw, said cam being movable out of the way oi said bar for permitting a quick manual adjustment in either of two directions.
