USTABLE GUIDE-BOARD FOR 'VEHICLE-ROUTES.
` Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 26, 1918.
Application `filed January 9, 1918. Serial No. 210,958.
.line of travel adapted for visually indicating conditions Vof travel at vadvanced points along the route. y
A further object of thedevice is the arrangement of a 'route sign that possesses simplicity, utility and durability, adapted for mounting upon any convenient support for indicating the distance and directionof a certain locality aswell as exigencies of travel conditions at intermediate points along the rway, whereby the .traveler` may be on the 'lookout for such occurrences as dangerous road crossings and railroadcrossings 1n the `direct order in vwhich the same will be encountered. w
A still further Yobject ofthe invention'is the arrangement of a distance and direction sign provided with interchangeable indicia of travel conditions, whereby` the sign may be arranged to correctly indicate succeedingroads and vcrossings upon any line of travel, such indications being also Areadily changeable in the event of achange in such conditions.
With these general objects in view, and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter Amore fully described, illustrated in thev accompanying drawing, andy then claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to the corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device operatively positioned -upon a post..` f Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal longitudinal sectional' view of a portion thereof taken upon line 11-11 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the said Portion' 0f the deve.-
A device of the nature hereinbeforeindicated is especially serviceable for automobile drivers in giving advance information respecting the distance and direction of a 4destination as well as a warning of dangerous places such as curves in road crossings and also railroad crossings as well as interl secting and branch roads.
4The device broadly consists of a sign ,board 10 preferably in the form of a large arrow which may be made of metal and suitably colored if desired. An advance point of travel such as a city is indicated up- 4on the rear plate portion ll-of the arrow such as New York while the distance from the sign to such city is also vindicated thereon The sign board 10 is readily mounted upon any support as the post 13 conveniently positioned at the side of the roadway. It will be understood that the said board may be mounted in this 'manner upon any desirable support and if the loccasion requires, the sign` may be bent -as at '14 in'angularar- .rangement to accurately indicate theddirection of the destination,;with"the triangular pointv member 17 pointing. out the path` of travel. A- plurality of indica-tors .18, 19, 15,20,
18' 21'and 22 are arranged for use "upon the reduced shank or shaft portion 23,0f the board 10, struck up receiving socketsor bands 24; being arranged upon the shank for the interchangeable reception thereof. Indicator 18 is `L-shaped` and pointstow-ard the left which shows that a crossroad from the left willmeet the main road at av point' dicator 2O shows that a road crossestlie main Y line of travel diagonally while 18 shows a crossroad entering from the right; the yindicator 21 shows that there is a dangerous railroad or other crossingarranged at right angles to the route of. travel; while indicator 22 shows the presence of a rdiagonal branch Yroad lto' be found therebeyond.
The indicators 18 may be arranged fto point either toward the right or left to show lthat -afuture road branches either `tofV the right or lett from the line of travel, While the indicator 2O which is i`shaped in torni with an oblique head may be reversely positioned tor showing the arrangement ot the diagonal cross road. ln a like manner, the indicator may be reversed for showing in which direction the angular cross road. extends from the line ot travel.
1n this manner it ivill be apparent that a code language arranged :tor use upon road signs that may be readily understood by the driver` of vehicles passing over the route so that troublesome points ahead maypbe safely guarded. against. indicator 19 may indicate a dangerous curve ahead it desired and this indicator may be slightly curved or bent as herein indicated by dotted lines for showing the -character ot such curye. Any of the indicators may be colored it desired While these may also contain Words or numbers stating what they indicate, or may bel inthe tcrmoll code letters or iigures it desired. Y
T his sign board `is placed in'an exposed location tacing the direction vfrom which the traveler would approach at the right hand side ot the road so that the saine may be readily read atter the manner of a guide book. Every possible dangerous condition to be approached may be indicated and anticipated. A route book might also be employed in connection with my system of sign boards' thereby constitutinga form of general road directory. The' bands 24 may be arranged with indented retaining lugs 25tor seating Within similari recesses 26 in the several-indicators, thereby maintaining the indicatorsproperly positioned upon thel board 'l0 although readily'removableftor interchanging Whenever desired.
A reinforcing Wire or barl' is arranged longitudinally `on either side kot the sign or shaft portion 23 secured through struck up loops 2?'tornied in the shaft, the said bar overlying the bands, tightening 'the same upon the indicators as Well as preventing the shaft trom bending by the action of the Wind or .other causes.
l/Vliile the form ot the inventionherein shown and described is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is never theless understood that minor changes 'may be made therein without departing from the spirit and .scope of' the invention asclaimed.
`1lizi-t1v claimy as neyv is 1.' A route sign comprisinga direction indicating means and a vplurality'ot indicators thereon depicting road conditions at distant points.
' 2. A route indicatorcomprisingadestination direction indicator and a plurality of diiierentlyiormed indicators mounted thereon corresponding in meaning Ato .distan'tly positioned conditions of travel upon the route cesignated'bv the direction indicator.

4. A device or" the class described coniprising a board adapted for arrangement adjacent a route of travel for indicating the direction and distance ot a stated destination, and diii'erently shaped means interchangeably and detachably associated therewith adapted for indicating conditions of travel to be encountered along the route ot travel toward such destination.
ltinat-ion along a route of travel. diiferently formed indicators vcarried by said board adapted for designating cross roa`ds,'bran`ch roacls,'dangerous curves and railway crossings arranged inthe-orderin whichv such conditions of travel occur upon the' routein the' direction indicated by the board.
7. A. sign board for automobile routes comprising ad'istance 4and direction indicator for a Ydesignated lpoint upon the line of travel. separatev indicators t'orv diiierentcon ditions ot travel upon the route in the direction indicated and detachable mounting means therefor.
