CROSSING ENDICATOR.
Application filed July 24, 192,2. Serial No. 577,185.
State of North Dakota, have invented newy and useful Improvements in Crossinglndicaters7 of which the following is a specification.
rlhe object or this invention is to provide means for indicating a danger point in the road ahead so as to warn vehicle drivers oi said danger point in time for them to check their speed before they reach said point.
Another object of the invention is to make the device movable so that it will swing out of the way when struck by a loaded vehicle of great height.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide streamerson the device to attract attention thereto. y
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specically pointed out in the Vappended claim.
ln describing my inventionV in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing a portion of a road with my invention in place.
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a Section on line 5- 5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 5. Y
Heretofore danger signs have been placed alongside the road but as most drivers keep their eyes on the road ahead it often happens that such signs are ignored by not being seen and thus the driver strikes the danger point without warning.
It is the object of my invention to so place the sign that the driver cannot help but see it and l also place streamers on the sign to attract the drivers attention thereto. In carrying out my invention I place a post 1 alongside the road and place a frame 2 at the top ci the post, the ,major portion of which projects ontv over the road. This frame carries a sit-n 3 which may be ofany suitable construction yand'which may contain any warning symbols.
Y Y rEhe frame is pivotally connected withthe post, as shown at 4, and springs 5, connected with the rear end or" the frame' and with an arm 6 on the post, tend to hold the frame in a position at right angles to the' road. Streamers 7 are suitably connected'with the lower edge o' the frame and extend downwardly over the road. rlhe frame may be provided with clips for containing small signs containing advertisement, as shown at 9. The -post is supported by Vthe braces k10, one of which contains a spring 11 and I also may provide a brace rod 12 for the post.
The symbols may be placed on the sign by luminous paint' or the device may be illuminated by a lamp or the like.
As will be seen from Figures 1 and 2. the sign extends out over the road and islocated at a suiiicient height to permit vehicles to pass under the same. If a vehicle with a tall load should pass along the road,V such as a load of hay, and strike the sign, the frame would simply swing on its pivot to permit the vehicle to pass and then the .springs would. bring 'the frame back to normal position.
As will be seen a driver with his eyes on the road ahead cannot help but seen the sign as it is in his line of vision and the streamers suspended on the frame will attract his attention to the same. be warned and it is impossible for him to go by the sign without seeing'it.
The device may be provided with means forfindicating the route and it may also be providedV with a flag holder and with projections for enabling a person to climb up the same.
It is Ythought from the foregoing description that the advantages'andfnovel features vof my inventionwill be readily apparent.
Thus the driver will e noo" m geniee a post placed alongside a road, a frame fname, said springs holding the frame ai pivotally secured to the top of the post and right angles to the road, a symbol carrying extending eut ovei` the road with its rear member in the frame and streamers attached 10 part extending beyond the post an arm carto the under edge of the frame.
ied by the post, a pair of springs, each havn testimony whereof I aiix my signature. ing one end connected with one end of the arm and its other end with the rear of the YJOHN L. SANFACON.
