To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnonon 2V. Ensure, a citizen of the United States, residing" at hlew Rochelle, Westchester county, New iork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Correction Devices for Dictation- Machines, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.

This invention relates tocorrection devices for dictation machines. It has heretofore been proposed to provide correction devices with a straight-edge extending transversely to the scale of the correction sheet to serve as a pencil-guide in marking desired points in the relative traverse or" the sound-box and record tablet. Devices of this type heretofore proposed, however, have not proved satisfactory for a number of reasons, among the more im ortent of which are the following:

in or er that the mark on the correction shectcorrectl designate the exact location of the soundox with respect to the record tablet, it is essential that the pencil employed not only be quite sharp but also be so positioned in making the mark that the latter lies at the intersection of the plane of the straight edge and the plane of the surface of the correction sheet. Remembering that the convolutions of the record groove have ordinarily a pitch of one one-hundredth (1/10( of an inch, a slightdeviation of the pencilpoint from the intersection of the aforementioned planes may result in an incorrect designation of the record groove amounting to several convolutions thereof, whereby it becomes difiicult for the transcriber to properly set the reproducer in selecting or locating designated portions of the recorded matter. Yet, owing to the appreciable dimension of the straight-edge at right angles to the surface ofthe correction sheet, it is difficult, in prior devices, to position the point of the pencil so as to make a line at the intersection of said planes, the pencil being easily tilted in one direction or the other about its point of engagement with the -straight-edsge so as to throw the markaconsiderable distance out of its proper position.

It is also desirable to employ in correction devicese pad of correction sheets and, even I if indicator, whether pointer or straight edge, be in engagement with the top cor- 'rection silcet when the pad is complete, a

space exists between the indicator and the surface of the pad after the top sheets are removed, which space continually increases as successive sheets are removed from the pad. This space between the lower edge of the indicator and the surface of the pad increases the likelihood. when marking the correction sheet, of a tilting of the pencil so as to throw the designating line an appreciable distance out of its proper position. Even if the indicator be not used as a pencilguide, the increasing space between the indicator and the surface of the pad renders it increasingly difficult to properly sight the point on the correction sheet scale designated by the indicator.

It is an objectof this invention to provide a correction device for dictation machines which remedies each and all of the defects above discussed. Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the type characterized with ,an indicator having a pencil-guide which is equally convenient whether the pencil be held in the left or right hand. Other objects relate to the provision of a device of the type in question which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in use.

Stated generally, the correction device for dictation machines comprises a support for correction sheets, an indicator, and means whereby the indicator and support have re iative movement in proportion to the relative movement of the sound-box and record tablet, said indicator comprising an indicating member constructed to rest on the correction sheet or sheets and movable to follow the surface of said sheets as successive sheets are removed. While the embodiment of the invention illustrated on the drawings has been described with particularity, it is to be especially understood that the-invention-is not restricted to the form shown, as the same is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, some of which readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, while certain features thereof are capable of use without other features thereof. Reference is therefore to be had to the appended claims for a definition of the limit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. In a correction device for a dictation machine, a support for a plurality of correction sheets and an'indicator movable with the sound-box of said machine, said indicator comprising a member constructed to rest on the top sheet and movable to follow the surface of said plurality'of sheets as successive sheets are removed.
