To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HAROLD E. SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vestboro, in the county of W'orcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skate- Fastening Devices, of which the followlng is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements 1n a skate fastening device and more particularly to an improved clamp for attaching the toe portion of a skate to the sole of a shoe.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a clamp of this character having a pivoted member adapted to conform itself to the curve of the edge of the sole of a shoe so that a greater gripping surface may be acted upon by the clamp for retaining the skate in position on the shoe.

One other object is the provision of an adjusting screw member having engagement with the sole engaging elements for moving the said engaging elements into and out of engagement with the sole of the shoe.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a skate fastening device which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form 'of my invention, in which;

Figure 1 is a bottom plan view.

Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the sole-plate 1 is shaped to fit the sole of the shoe and a pair of longitudinal movable clamp arms 2 and 3 are mounted upon the, bottom surface of the plate 1 and held in engagement therewith by the rivets l. The rivets 4 extend through slots 6 in the arms 2 and 3 thereby permitting the arms to be moved transversely across the surface of the plate 1. Retaining ears 7 are formed on the inner end of each arm 2 and 3 provided with screw threaded apertures for receiving the adjusting screw 8 provided with right and left hand screw threads. Depending from the center of the sole plate 1 is a finger 9 having a bifurcated portion adapted to embrace a neck 10 formed by reducing a portion of the adjusting screw 8 intermediate its ends.

The end of the bar 3 is provided with a downwardly bent portion from which extends a retaining flange 11 having a central opening for receiving a fastening bolt 12. Mounted upon the flange 11 is a clamp "13 formed of a right angular piece of material having its base flange provided with a central opening through which the bolt 12 is extended. The vertical flange of the clamp is provided with a series of serrations adapted to engage the edge of the sole of a shoe. The bolt 12 is provided with a nut 14 while interposed between the nut and the bottom of the flange 11 is a flat spring 15 having a central opening through which the bolt 12 passes. The pivoted position of the clamp 13 permits the vertical flange thereof to be disposed at an angle from the clamp arm 8 whereby it may adjust itself to the curve of the shoe sole. Since the outside edge of the sole of an ordinary shoe is provided with a sharper curve than the inside edge thereof, it is unnecessary to provide a clamp similar to the clamp 13, for the clamp arm 2. This clamp arm has the sole engaging flange 16.

I claim:

1. A skate fastening device comprising a sole plate having a pair of clamp arms attached thereto, one of the said clamp arms being adjustably mounted for movement toward or away from the other clamp arm and adapted to extend over the edge of the said sole plate, each of the said clamp bars having a depending ear provided with an aperture, a rotatable screw member received in the said apertures and oppositely threaded to move the ears toward or away from each other when the said screw is rotated, one of the said clamp arms having its terminal depressed to extend below the plane of the sole plate, a screw stud extending through the said depressed portion and having an enlarged head, and a retaining clamp engaged by the said stud and mounted upon the said depressed portion of the clamp bar and adapted for pivotal movement on the screw stud.

2. A skate fastening device comprising a sole plate, clamp arms carried by the said sole plate and adjustably mounted to move toward or away from the edge of the sole plate, each of the said clamp arms having a depending ear provided with an aperture, a rotatable screw member received in the apertures and provided With oppositely threaded portions engageable with the ears to move the clamp arms toward and away from each other when the screw is rotated, 15 one of the said clamp arms including a flange having a clamp mounted thereon, and a flat spring interposed between the bottom of the said flange and the end of the bolt for the said clamp bar. 20
