RAILROAD-TIE MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed May 21, 1917. Serial No. 169,954.
To all whom it may comm.-
Be it known that I, JOHN OARsoN GRAY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at,
Waskish, in the county of Beltrami, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Tie Molds and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in concrete molds, and pertains more particularly to a mold especially adapted for molding composition railway ties.
The main object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which after the tie has been molded may be collapsible for the purpose of removing the molded tie.
A further object of the invention is to provide means carried by the mold by which the rail fastening means carried by the tie may be supported within the mold during the molding operation.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1, is a top plan view of the mold,
Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4, is a detail view,
Fig. 5, is a detail view; and,
Fig. 6, is a detail view of the side and end securing means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a bottom member 10, two side members 11, and two end members 12. The bottom member 10 is provided near its side edges with rectangular perforations 13, and as shown in Fig. 1 the side members 11 are provided on their bottom edge with depending integral lugs 14 which are adapted to be received within the rectangular perforation 13 of the bottom member 10. This bottom member 10 is provided near each of its end edges with rectangular perforations 15, and the end members 12 are provided on their bottom edges with integral depending lugs 16 which are ada ted to be received in the rectangular per orations 15 of the bottom member.
As shown in Fig. 6, the side members are provided at their upper corners with eyes 17 which project therefrom in the same plane as the side members, and secured to the upper corners of each of the end members and extending therefrom at right angles thereto are eye members 19 which when the side and end members are placed on the bottom member 10' are adapted to register with the eye members 17 of the side in such a manner that a bolt or rod 20 may be passed therethrough tosecure the said side and end members 11 and 12 in vertical relation with respect to the bottom member 10.
Suitably positioned and secured by screws or the like within the mold near each end on its upper face is a block 21 provided with a pair of recesses 22 and 23, for retaining rail clamps or the like in place within the mold during the molding operation and in such a manner that said rail clamps will be embedded in the complete molded article. A plate or the like 24 is provided on one of its edges with a circular cut out portion 25, and the upper face of the block 21 is recessed as at 26 adjacent the opening 22 for the reception of said plate, the curved face of which is adapted to engage the rail clamp, and the lugs 27 on opposite sides of the curved face 25 are adapted to overlie the ends of the recesses 22 to prevent any of the concrete or material from which the article is molded from entering the said recess 22. The blocks 21 are permanent parts of the mold and the sockets 22 and 23 therein will support rail clamps for engaging the inner and outer sides of the base flange of a rail, and these clamps are held vertically in the block 21 when engaged in the sockets therein.
In use, the mold is set up by inserting the integrally depending lugs 14 of the side members in the recesses 13 of the bottom member, the depending lugs 16 of the end members being inserted in the rectangular perforation 15.
- VVit-h the parts in this position the eye members 17 and 19 are positioned so that their openings register with each other and the bolt or rods 20 are inserted therethrough. The blocks 21 are then placed in the mold with the rail clamps in position therein. The mold is now filled with plastic material and when said plastic material has set, by removing the bolts or rods 20 the mold is readily knocked down to permit of the removal of the molded article.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is:
A mold of the character described comprising an elongated trough-like body having detachable sides and ends, means mounted exteriorly on the sides and ends and adapted to overlap and register with each other, fastening bolts i'eniovztbl engaged in said means, blocks fixed within the body on its bottom and having sockets in their upper faces and extended vertically only partially through the same, the bottom being formed with slots, and lugs formed from the lower edges of said sides and ends and engaged in 10 the slots.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
