.mvENfoR WITNESSES ATTORNEY EDWARD I-I. WEHLIEL OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
HEADACHE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1918.
Application filed January 19, 1918. Scria1No.212,674.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, EDWARD H. WEHLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Headache-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to medical appliances and it has particular reference to appliances for the treatment and relief of conditions due to congestion of the brain such as headaches, dizziness, drowsiness and in fact any condition due to high blood pressure in the arterial and venous system of the brain and medulla including that of the spinal cord.
The invention has for its object to produce a simple, inexpensive and efficient device of improved construction which may be safely used for home treatment as well as in the hands of a medical practitioner.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved device of the character set forth which in many cases may be easily and safely used by the patient without the assistance of others.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the 'dev1ce.
Fig. 2 isa sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the use of the device.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the ,drawings are denoted by like characters of reference.
A supporting bar 15 which is preferably of slightly arcuate form is provided at the ends thereof with slits or notches 16. C designates a harness consisting of a band of flexible, preferably textile, material, said band having a relatively wide portion 17 which will be regarded as the front portion thereof. The band is doubled upon itself to form two loops 18, the bights of which are inserted in the notches 16 of the supporting bar, said notches being obstructed at or near their outer ends by obstructing members 19 which will prevent accidental engagement of the loops from the notches but will not prevent movement of the vband forming the loops transversely with respect to the supporting bar. In other words, the band may be so adjusted as to make the front and rear portions equal or unequal as may be desired. Each of the loops 18 is surrounded by a sleeve or ring 20 which may also be made of textile material. It has already been stated that the wide portion 17 of the band C is regarded as constituting the top portion thereof; the diametrically opposite portion 21 thus becomes the rear portion.
Connected with the top of the supporting bar 15 about midway between the ends thereof is one end of a chain 22, the other end of which is equipped with a hook 23. The chain 22 is trained over a pulley 24L journaled in a block or casing 25 having a ring 26 whereby it may be suspended in any convenient position for operation; for instance on the top hinge of a door or on a stout nail or hook provided for the purpose.
In the operation of this device the patient is seated in an erect posture in an ordinary chair directly beneath the apparatus which latter is now adjusted to the proper height by holding the front and rear portions of the band C level with the chain and then securing the suspending bar by engagingthe hook 23 at the end of the chain, after drawing the latter taut, between two links of the chain. The sleeves 20 are now pushed upward until the front and rear portions of the band C may be conveniently passed over the head of the patient, the wide front portion 17 being adjusted under the jaw bone, and the narrow rear portion being so placed that it will rest on the occipital bone of the skull or at the junction of the head and neck. The sleeves 20 are now moved downward so as to retain the band in adjusted position without, however, impeding the circulation. The patient will then permit his arms to hang loosely and relax his entire body permitting it to sag or slide down in the chair sufliciently to cause the band to exert considerable pressure on the parts engaged thereby but not enough to cause pain or inconvenience. This posture may be maintained for a period of one-half minute to five minutes according to the comfort of the patient, and the treatment may be repeated at intervals of ten to fifteen minutes.
By thepressur'e applied in the manner de promptly relieved.
The improved device, as will be seen, is of extremely simple construction and of such a nature that it may be readily adjusted to fit anyperson. The use thereof is also entirely safe.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the class described, a supporting bar, suspending means for said bar, and a head harness carried by the bar, said head harness comprising a chin strap and a back head strap, said straps being connected together and the bights formed by the con nections between said straps being slidably engaged with the bar, and sleeves slidable on said straps toward and from said bar to ad- 'justably connect said straps-together at )ortin bar means forsus endin said bar 1 and a flexible harness con-nectedwith said bar adjacent to the ends thereof, said-harness comprising a relatively wide front portion, a relatively narrow rear portion, and slidable adjusting sleeves encircling the said front and rear portions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWARD H. WEHLE, M. D.
