To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Am SAMUEL Veer, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Blow- 'ers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in blower devices for steam locomotives sults. In this latter connection it is proposed to provide a device which may be entirely independent of the exhaust pipe for support, and of such a construction that the steam jet openings thereof will not become stopped or cloggpd by oil from the locomotive cylinders who usually hardens or solidifies at or about such openings and interferes with the.
proper performance of the blower.
A further object of the invention is to provide a blower device of such a character that it may be readily secured to the lower end of the lift pipe from the outside thereof through the use of suitable fastening devices, thus greatly facilitating the installation of the evice and its removal in case of necessity.
Another object of the invention is to provide a blower device in the form of a rmglike casting wherein the steam jet orifices have a novel disposition with regardto the lift pipe, whereby steam discharged there from w1ll effectively sweep the lift pipe of the air and gases contained therein to thereby create a partial vacuum in the smoke box which the air beneath the grate, and products of combustion will seek to fill, thus causing the roper draftfor the locomotive,
ith these and other ob ects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination andarrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a locomotive smoke box showing the blower device fitted-to the lower end of the lift pipe. Fig. i is a, transverse sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 3, showing more clearly the relation of the blower device to the usual form of exhaust pipe.
Figs. 5 and 6 are respectivelylongitudinal and transverse sectional views showing the blower device installed in a smoke box wherein the lift pipe is formed in sections.
Similar references designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Heretofore it has been customarily the practice to secure the blower casting to the exhaust pipe by suitable fastening means or locate-the same in such a osition with reference thereto that the 011 from the locomotive cylinders carried out through the said pipe has an opportunity to solidify or harden around the jet orifices to such an extent that it often closes such openings or at least reduces their diameter to such an extent that the efficiency of the blower is greatly reduced.
Accordingly, the present invention aims to eliminate this objection by "suspending the blower device a suitable distance above the exhaust pipe and also arranging the jet orifices in such a manner that the ossibility of oil collectin there-about is re need to a minimum, thus keeping the blower in a proper state of efliciency." In carrying this idea into effect no change or alteration is contemplated in the usual smoke box construction, nor in the design of the exhaust pipe or smoke stack. That is tosay,the present improvement is particularly directed to a novel blower device which is preferably in the form of a ring-like casting, designated in the drawings generally as 10 and having formed at one end thereof a suitable attachbe readily secured together by means of suitable fastening bolts 12. As'will be observed from the drawings these bolts are arranged in such a manner that the nuts thereof ma be placed thereon from the exterior of e pipe and blower device, thus facilitating the securing of the latter to-the lift pipe. And, as willalso be observed from the drawings, in order to assist in properly fitting the blower device to the end of the.
lift pipe, the same is preferably provided with an interior annular shoulder 13 for abutting against the lower edge of the lift pipe.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the upper end of the blower ring is adapted to be fitted to the lift pipe and held at a fixed distance above the discharge end of the exhaust pipe, and with further reference to the features and characteristics of the device it may be noted that the lower end 15 thereof is outwardly flared, or of hellshaped formation, whereby the products of combustion in the smoke box will be assisted into the lift pipe, as well as the steam from the exhaust pipe, whereby they mayreadily make their exit through the usual smoke Stack 16.
The intermediate or body portion of the blower ring 10 is formed with an annular steam channel 17 which is preferably located on the exterior surface of the ring, and also includes a plurality of inwardly projecting nozzle portions 18, each ofwhich has an upper inclined face l8 disposed obliquely to the plane of the shoulder 13 and is provided in such face with a jet orifice 19 whose axis is disposed obliquely to the axis of the lift pipe and blower ring.
It will be obvious that the novel formation of these nozzle portions 18 prevents the accumulation of oil and the like. That is to say, owing to the inclination of the face 18 all liquids will drain rapidly therefrom, and materially assist in the cleaning action produced by the steam issuing from the jet orifices 19. As there is a. plurality of these jet orifices 19 disposed in the manner indicated around the interior of the blower ring, it will be apparent that the steam jets issuing therefrom will converge to a point as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3, thus providing in effecta conical steam spray which will efi'ect'ively create an up-draft in the lift pipe 11.
For the purpose of supplying necessary steam to the passage 17 the same is provided at a suitable point with a securing flange 21 which is adapted to have fitted thereto the corresponding flange 22 of a coupling asso-' ciated with the steam supply pipe 23 shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive it will be observed that pipe 25 must pass through the bell-mouthed portion 15 of the blower ring and thence through the lift pipe 11 to the stack 16, which has the advantage of providing a more eflective draft, sincethe full force of the steam issuing from the exhaust nozzle 25 as well as from the jet orifi es 19 is concentrated in the lower end of t elift pipe and has the effect of an ejector for all of the products of combustion in the smoke box. In this form a true forced draft is obtained, there being no provision for any of the products of combustion to escape from the smoke box under natural draft since the smoke pipe 11 is in eflect a continuation of the stack 16, and the only outlet is through the bell portion 15 which is located well down in the smoke box.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the same type of blower ring may be utilized as shown in Figs. 1 to 1 inclusive. However, in these figures the blower ring is shown in connection with a lift pipe which is made in sections instead of one piece as in Figs. 1 to 4. Thus in this form of the invention the lift pipe 11 consists of a tubular section b, of uniform diameter throughout and an upper section 0 of tapering cross section, said latter section 0 being spaced from the upper 'end of the section 6, thus providing three points of outlet for the gases from the smoke box, namely at the points w, 3 and z instead of one as in Figs. 1 to 4. In this form the products of combustion may escape from the smoke box to the stack 16 by natural draft through the passages indicated as well as with the assistance of the blower device.
Although in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 a different type of lift pipe is shown, the functions of the blower device 10 nevertheless remain the same.
Without further description it is thought that the invention will be readilv understood bv those familiar with the art and it will of course be understood that minor changes in the form, proportion and details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims:
