UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-LINE RE ELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.-1'28,539, dated July 2, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Clothes-Line Reel and Tightener, invented by SAMUEL DRAKE and J osnrn DRAKE, of Canton, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois.
Our invention relates to putting up and tightening any ordinary clothes-line on which clothes are hun g up to dry after being washedl Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
A represents any ordinary clothes-line post firmly set in an upright position, or it may represent a wooden block to be bolted to such post. 13 13 are wrought, malleable, or eastiron brackets secured to opposite edges of (the post or) a block of wood to be bolted to the post. 0 is any ordinary crank and used for winding in the line. D is the crank end of E is the ratchet end of reel. F is the drum of reel, around which and between D and E the line is wound. G is the pawl which holds the line from paying out. H is a lever attached to the shaft of reel, having the pawl I to couple it to the ratchet end of reel. J is the line which passes over the pulley set in the top of the post or wooden block A.
In the construction of this machine, A is of wood. D is a wooden wheel. F is a wooden drum, and the outer end of the lever H is of wood. All other parts are designed to be of metal. A covering, not shown in drawing, protects the line from the weather.
To operate this machine, throw back the pawl G, nn gear and drop the lever H. Then take the end of line, place it over the pulley, and uurcel as much of the line as desired and fasten the end. Throw in gear the pawl G and raise the lever II, which will readily gear with pawl I to the ratchet-wheel E. With this lever moving back and forth, tighten the line, as desired. In taking in the line use the crank 0. Set the reel at any desired height.
\Ve make no claim to a mere reel for holdin g or taking in a clothes-line; but
VVh-at we do claim is- The several partsns shown, to wit: A, the wooden block; B B, the wrought or cast iron brackets; O, the crank; D and E, the ends of the reel F, the drum of the reel; G, the ratchet; II, the lever; and I, the pawl; all in combination, when made and operated substantially as shown, as and for the uses and purposes herein set forth.
