SIGNALING-TORPEDO.
@pacification of Letters Patent.
'remiten am. ie, raie.
Application led June 30. 1917. Serial No. 178,006.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERTO CrMonosI, a sub'ect of the King of Italy, residing at Bu alo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signaling-Torpe' does, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved form of signaling torpedoes, such as aroused on railroad tracks for the purpose of notify'- ing an oncoming train that there is danger ahead.
Signaling torpedoes of this type arel attached to the head of the rail, and as they are engaged by the wheels of the train, will explode, thereby producing iorms the signal.
lrior to my' invention, the construction of these torpedoes was such that in many instances the wheel of the train instead of running over and exploding them would merely push them o the track. The reason for this was that the torpedo projected so far above the track as to provide a shoulder or npwardly projecting edge which, when the wheel engaged it. would merely act as a means for dedecting or sliding the torpedo from the track prior to the time when the wheel should pass over the explosive compound within the torpedo.
@ne or the objects of my invention is to provide a torpedo with a relatively thin portion which extends sufcientlv beyond the explosive portion of the torpedo that the wheel of the train will be compelled to ride on said thin portion.. and when once thereon, will edectively bind or press the torpedo to the track and compel the explosive portion to remain thereon until the wheel reaches and runs over it.
Another object of mv invention is to provide my improved torpedo with mechanism :tor retaining the explosive within the body,
tit
the retaining means being such that it may be easily removed or inserted, but when once in place. will act to eiectively retain said ex losive within the body portion.
A st l further object of my invention is to so construct my improved torpedo that it may be quickly assembled and may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
'lhese objects. and other advantageous endswhich will be described hereinafter, l attain in the following` manner, reference a noise which1 being had to which*- Figure 1 is a tion.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved torpedo as shown in Fig. l, and illustrated 1n connection with a rail.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sections taken on the 11nes a-a and b-b respectively, of Fig. 1.
'Fig'. 5 is a top plan View of a modified form of mv invention. and
ig. 6 is a section taken on the line c-c of Fig. 5.
the accompanying drawings in top plan view of my inven- Referring to the drawings, 1. is a base l plate or body portion made of thin sheet material of any suitable character which'can be easily cut and bent into shape. This basev has an upwardly projecting recess 2 formed therein by stamping or other means, and this recess provides a housing for the explosive material 3, the latter being coniined within the recess by means of a cap 4 having an 11p-turned annular Harige 5.
The explosive material and cap are of such size as to completely fill the recess 2, the lower face of the cap e being iush with the under face of the oppositely tapered end extensions 6, 6, of the base 1. These extensions 6 may be of any length desired, and by the above mentioned construction are of a single thickness of sheet metal and designed to be engaged by the wheel of a train prior to the engagement of the wheel with the raised portion 7 which provides said recess 2.
A. retaining strip 8 made of em'ble metal or other material extends through slots 9,
Fig. 2 illustrates the wheel ll of a train in engagement with and riding one of the extensions 6, and it will be understood that the pressure exerted upon said extension 6 will prevent its removal from the trackl after the wheel has once engaged it, thus compellin the wheel to ride over the portion 7 and expode the explosive material 3.
