IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC STOPS FOR STEAM HOISTING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,495, dated July 2, 1872.
l SPECIFTCATION.
I, WILLIAM H. LAvINIA, of the city of Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stop for Steam Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a full description, reference 'being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation; Fig. 2, a plan of the`plate A with the face-plate B removed;
4 B, face-plate, resting on a shoulder in A; b, a
channel on the inside of the face-plate; O, a slide, having on one side a projection, c, fitting the channel b, and on the other side a projection, e, fitting the spiral channel a; D, reversing-lever, which operates the valve; E, reversing-cable. The length of the channel a depends upon the entire distance through which the platform travels. The parts A B may be pivoted upon any suitable standard, so placed that the plate A will be revolved by the'friction-pnlley F, which is to be secured to the shaft of the driving-wheel. dis a bar, one
end of which is pivoted to the face-plate B,
and the other to the lever D.
In Fig. 4 the slide C is represented at the outer end of the channel a, in which position the platform is supposed to be at its lowest point. As the platform ascends the plate A will be revolved by the friction-pulley F, and
thevfaceplate B will remain stationary; the
yslide O will travel both around in the channel a and along the channel b until it reaches the inner end of the channel a, when the platform will have reached its highest point; and the slide O, coming in contact with the end of the channel a and ceasing to move, the face-plate B will commence to revolve with the plate A; and, by means of the bar d, the reversing-lever D will be operated, shutting off the steam. When the platform descends the movement will be reversed, but the operation will be the same.
Instead of the friction-pulley F, a gearwheel may be used, A being also provided with suitable gear.
The lever D is attached to any suitable shifting devices, and when the slide O reaches the end 2 of groove c the plates or wheels A and B are locked together; they then raise the lever D, which reverses the movement. Plate B then remains stationary until the slide O strikes end l of the groove, when the plates are again locked, and the leverD is depressed and the movement again reversed, thus reversing the movement at each extreme limit. As the lever D and plate B can be moved in either direction when the slide O is anywhere between the ends l 2, the intermediate stops or changes are made bythe rope E in the usual manner.
What I claim as new is as follows:
The combination of the plate A having a spiral groove or channel, a, and plate B provided with a radial channel or ledges, b, and slide C, with the shifting-lever D, 'substantially as and for the purposes specified.
