Be it known that I, EDWIN W. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Bearings for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to side bearings for cars and the like, of the type disclosed and broadly claimed in a copending application, executed of even date herewith and filed by Franklin L. Barber and myself.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention with some parts broken away and sectioned;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2, but illustrating the movable parts of the side bearing moved to one of their extreme positions.
The numerals 6 and 7 indicate, respectively, the body bolster and the truck bolster of a railway car. The improved side bearing is carried by the body bolster 6 and includes a cast rectangular housing 8, with an open top and bottom. Cast .with the upper portion of the housing 8, at the corners thereof, are four horizontally disposed ears 9, having bores 10 through which rivets or other fastening means, not shown, are passed to rigidly secure the side bearing to the body bolster 6. The top surfaces of the housing 8 and ears 9, extend in an oblique plane to conform to the surfaces of the body bolster to which they are secured, and have flat engagement therewith.
On the inner 4faces of the end walls of the l'housing 8, 'are shoulders lil, on which iS loosely supported a cover 12, which fits within the housing 8 and is held thereby, against horizontal movement. The upper surface of the cover 1.2 extends in the same oblique plane as the upper surfaces of the housing 8 and ears 9, so as to bear directly against the body bolster 6. The top of the cover 12 is cored for the sake of lightness and the saving of material. The ends of the cover 12 terminate short of the respective ends of the housing 8, and cast therewith, at the bottom thereof, are small lianges 18, provided for` a purpose that will presently appear. 0n the bottom of the cover 12, at the ends thereof, are guides 14 which slidably receive and support a wearing plate 15. When the cover 12 is in position the wearing plate 15 is held thereby, against removal from the guides 14.
In the four corners of the housing' 8 are formed pockets 16, having on their bottoms, roller seats 17, which from their centers have upwardly diverging contours. The ends of a pair of rollers 18 are mounted in opposite pairs of seats 1-7. Supported on the rollers 18, is a self-centering H-shaped carrier 19, the ends of which work in the pockets 16. On the under surfaces of the ends of the side members of the carrier 19, are formed roller seats 20, of the same form as the seats 17, with the exception that they are inverted with respect thereto, and rest directly upon the rollers 18. In the upper edges of the side members of the carrier 19, on each side of the transverse member thereof, is a pair of transversely alined fulcrum notches 21.
The body bolster 6 is supported from the truck bolster 7 by a pair of rockers 22 located, the one in advance of the other, within the carrier 19, with the transverse member of the said carrier extending therebetween. The upper and lower ends of the rockers 22 are segmental and the former thereof supports the wearing plate 15 and the latter thereof rests directly on a wearing plate 23 secured to the truck bolster 7l. Both of these segmental surfaces of the rockers 22 are widened at their ends to increase their hearing surfaces and also to add weight to the lower ends thereof.

On each extended end of the upper segmental surfaces of the rockers 22, is a stop surface 25, arranged to engage the carrier 19, under certain extreme movements of the rockers 22, as will presently Stop flanges 26 are formed on the lower inner edges of the ends of the housing 8, with which the rockers 22 engage to limit certain extreme movements thereof.
Normally the rockers 22 rest on the wearing plate23 and support the car body and load through the wearing plate 15 and cover 12. Vhen the load is thus supported, the fulcrum hubs 24 are entirely out of contact with the carrier 19 and as long as the load continues on the rockers, the motion is simple and said rockers move back and forth on .the wearing plates and Carry with them the carrier 19. n I, K y A Then the car is on a curve, the rockers 22 will be positioned as shown in Fig. 5 to agrea'ter or less degree and as the rockers 22 are interlocked to the carrier 19 by the fulcrum notches 21 and fulcrum hubs 24, said ycarrier .will be moved therewith. This movement of the carrier 19moves certain of the inclined surfaces ofyits roller seats 2O onto the rollers 18 and also moves said rollers onto certain of the inclined surfaces of the roller seats 17. With the rollers 18 on the inclined surfaces of the roller seats 17 and 20, the carrier 19 is lifted into a position to bring the fulcrum notches 21 into close relation to the fulcrum hubs 24.
If the rockers 22 continueto support the load from the wearing plate 23, until the car passes beyond the curve, the movable parts of the side bearing will return to normal positions, under the action of the bolsters with respect to each other, but if the car body liftswith respect to the car truck, the carrier 19 will lift the rockers 22 out of engagement with the wearing plate 23 and said rockers will then swing on their fulcrum hubs 24, in the fulcrum notch 21, into perpendicular or normal positions. This swinging movement of the rockers will carry with them the carrier 19, which carrier will, at
kthe same time, assist in positioning the rockers. lThe rollers 18 and carrier 19 will, at the same time, self-center lthemselves and also assist in positioning the carrier 19. It will thus be seen that the rockers 22 are instantly returned to normal position and are again ready to support the load Vwhen the'car body again assumes a normal position.
Extreme movements of the rockers 22 are limited by the engagement of the stop surfaces 25 of one thereof, with the carrier 19, the engagement ofthe other of said rockers with the stop flange 26 and the engagement ofbovth of said rockers with; the transverse portion of the carrier 19. l y
In assembling the improved side bearing,
the rollers 18 are first mounted on the seats 17 and the rockers placed in the carrier, with ltheir hubs 24 in the notches 21, said assembled rockers and carrier are then placed in the housing, with the ends of said carrier resting on the rollers 18. The wearing plate 15 is then secured to the cover 12 and said cover placed in the housing and supported on the shoulders 11. To hold the parts in 'assembled relation before the side bearing is secured to the body bolster, the upper edges of the end walls ofthe housing 8 are bent inwardly, as indicated by broken lines at 27, by pounding or otherwise, so that they will overlie the flanges 13, 0n the vend of the cover l2, land thereby hold said cover in position.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In a side bearing, the combination with a body bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured to thebody bolster, a pair of Yrollers mounted. in the housing, a carrier mounted on the rollers, and a rocker normally supportingthe body bolster from the truck bolster, said carrier and rockers having interlocking normally separated Cooperating fulcrums, the ffulcrum on the rocker being located above the center of gravity thereof.
2. In a side bearing, the combination with a rbody bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured to the body bolster, a pair of rollers mounted in the housing, a carrier mounted on the rollers, and a rocker normallysupportingthebody bolster from the truck bolster, said carrier and rockers having interlocking normally separated coperating fulcrums, the fulcrum on the rocker being located above the center of gravity thereof, said fulcrum arranged to hold the carrier in an eXtreme 'position when the rocker is in a like position.
3. In a side bearing, the'combination with the body bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured vto the body bolster, a pair of self-centering rollers mounted in the housing, a self-centering carrier mounted on the rollers, and a vrocker normally supporting the body bolster from the truck bolster, said carrier and rocker having interlocking normally separated eope'rating fulcrums, the fulcrum on the rocker being located above the lcenter 0f gravity thereof, said rocker arranged to engage the carrier to limit its rocking movement and t0 hold the carrier in an eXtreme position therewith.
4.V Infa sidebearing, the combination with the body bolster and a. truck bolster, of a housing secured tothe body bolster, a pair of selfcenterin'g rollers mounted in the housing, a self-centering carrier mounted on the rollers, and a yrocker normally supporting ranged to engage lhe carrier to limit its rocking movement and to hold the carrier in an extreme position therewith, said rocker arranged to engage the carrier and housing to limit its rocking movement and hold the carrier in an extreme position therewith.
5. ln a side bearing, the combination with the body bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured to the body bolster, a pair of self-centering rollers mounted in the housing a self-centering carrier mounted on the rollers, and a rocker normally supporting the body bolster from the truck bolster, said carrier and rocker having interlocking normally separated cooperating tulcrums, the Eulcrum on the rocker being located above the center of gravity thereof, said rocker arranged to engage the Carrier to limit its rocking movementJ and to hold the carrier in an extreme position therewith, said rocker arranged to engage the carrier both above and below its ulcrum to limit its extreme movement in one direction and to engage the housing and carrier to limit its extreme movement in the other direction.
6. In a side bearing, the combination with a body bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured to thel body bolster, a pair of seit-centering rollers mounted in the housing, a self-centering carrier mounted on the rollers and having a' ulcrum notch, and a rocker normally supporting the body bolster from the truck bolster, said rocker having a hub projecting into the fulcrum notch and normally out ot engagement therewith, said hub being located above the center ot gravity of the rocker.
7. In a side bearing, the combination with a body bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured to the body bolster, a pair ot self-centering rollers mounted in the housing, a self-centering carrier including a pair ot side members having their ends mounted on the rollers and also having a pair of fulcrum notches, and a rocker located between the side members of a carrier and normally supporting the body bolster from the truck bolster, said carrier having a pair of hub-s extending into said notches, and normally out of engagement therewith, said hubs being located above the center ot gravity of the rockers.
8. In a side bearing, the combination with a body bolster and a truck bolster, ot a, housing secured to the body bolster, a pair of self-centering rollers mounted in the housing, a self-centering carrier including a. pair of side members having their ends mounted on the rollers and also having a pair of fulcrum notches, and a rocker located between the side members ot a carrier and normally supporting the body bolster from the truck bolster, said carrier having a pair of hubs extending into said notches, and normally out of engagement therewith,
said rocker being laterally extended above and below its hubs to increase the bearing surfaces thereof.
9. 1n a side bearing, the combination with a body bolster and a truck bolster, ot a housing secured to the body bolster, a pair of self-centering rollers mounted in the housing, a seit-centering carrier including a pair otl side members having their ends mounted on the rollers and also having a pair of fulcrum notches, and a rocker located between the side members ot' a carrier and normally supporting the body bolster from the truck bolster, said carrier having a pair of hubs extending into said notches, and normally out of engagement therewith, said hubs being located above the center' of gravity of the rockers, the extended upper bearing surfaces ot the rocker having stop surfaces engageable with the carrier to limit the extreme movements of the rockers and carrier.
10. ln a side bearing, the combination of a body bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured to the body bolster, pairs ot roller centering seats in the housing, a pair of rollers having their ends mounted in said seats, a carrier including a pair of side members having in their ends seats resting on the rollers and arranged to center the carrier, 'said side members having ulcrum notches, and a rocker located between the side members of the carrier and having a pair or' hubs extending into said notches, said hubs being located above the center of gravity ot the rocker.
11. In a side bearing, the combination with a body bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured to the body bolster, a pair of roller centering seats in the housing, a pair ol' rollers having their ends mounted in said seats, an irl-shaped carrier having in the ends of its side members seats resting on the rollers and arranged to center said carrier, 'said carrier also having in its side members on each side oi its transverse member a pair of fulcrum notches, and a pair of rockers located one on each side of the transverse member of the carrier and having pairs of hubs extending into said notches said hubs being located above the center of gravity of the rockers.
12. In a side bearing, the combination with a body bolster and a truck bolster, of a housing secured to the body bolster, a pair of roller centering seats in the housing, a pair of rollersv having their ends mounted in said seats, an H-shaped carrier having in the ends of its side members seats resting on the rollers and arranged to center said carrier, said carrier also having in its side members on each side of its transverse member a pair of ulcrum notches, and a pair of rockers located one on each side of the transverse member of the carrier and having pairs of hubs extending into said notches,
