To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLOYD MoNRoUGH America, residing. at Muskogee, in thecount of Muskogee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Innn'ovements in Automobile-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automobile locks of the type wherein the control lever is locked in reverse gear.
it has heretofore been customary to lock an automobile so as to prevent same being moved, and in case of fire or other disturbance if it was found essential to remove the vehicle, it was necessary to push or slide it, or lift it bodily to another place. In other cases means have been provided to lock the control lever in neutral, which, while permitting of the removal of the vehicle manually, it was impossible to move it by means of its own power.
According to myinvention, I provide means for locking the control lever in reverse position; consequently when it is found necessary to move the car, for instance in case of fire or other unusual disturbance, the clutch can be disengaged and the engine started in the usual way, and the car by its own power can be backed to a point of safety and yet for ordinary purposes stealing is prevented.
The invention, therefore, comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

3 indicates my improved lock, and it comprises a casing 4, provided at the top with an overhanging flange 6, and a depending reduced portion 7, one side of the latter is a section on the line 55, of
being beveled to rest on the control lever when the same is thrown in reverse position in the slot formed in the plate.
A recess 8 is formed in the depending reduced portion, and mounted therein, on a pivot 9, 1s a dog 10, the upper outer end 11 of which is adaptedto be-projected beyond ed in an opening l5 formed in the casing.
On one side of the rod 14:, areteeth 16, with which teeth 17, on a key 18, mesh when operating the dog, the key fitting in a vertical opening 19 in the top of the casing.
A spring-20 is located in the recess 8, and is interposed between the inner edge of the dog 10, and the-wall ofsaid recess'to normally rock the dog on its pivot and project the upper end beyond the-plane ofthe face of-the depending reduced portion. A shield 21, is fitted over the face of the depending reduced portion to protect the dog and prevent unauthorized persons from tampering with the lock.
In operation, the key is inserted in the vertical opening, and its teeth mesh with the teeth on the rod, and by turning the key the dog is withdrawn against the tension of the spring.
In the meantime, the control lever 1, is shifted in the slot in plate 2, to reverse position. Then the depending reduced portion is inserted in the slot, and in the shield, the overhanging flange 6, resting on the top of the plate 2, and a recess 4 on the casting, engages the yoke 1 on the control lever 1. The key is turned, or rather pressure thereon is removed, and the spring rocks the dog and projects its upper end 11, beyond the face of the casting and under the edge of the plate 2. It follows that inasmuch as the opposite edge of the casting is confined by and is in engagement with the control lever and the yoke, and as the upper end 11 is caught under the plate 2, the lock cannot be withdrawn, nor can the control lever 1 be moved in the slot. Hence, the car is locked in reverse gear and affords protection against theft, but if it should be necessary to back the car from a curb or its stored position in the garage, the clutch can be disengaged and the engine started and the car backed by its own power.
What I claim is:
1. An automobile lock to look a control lever in interlocked gear position comprising a casing, a pivoted dog normally projected beyond the face of the casing, a flange on the casing to cooperate with the pivoted dog to lock the lever in interlocked gear position, a rod extending from the dog, teeth on the rod, interlocking means between the casing and the control lever, and a key having teeth to mesh with the teeth on the rod to retract the dog to remove the lock.
2. An automobile lock comprising a casing having a top overchanging flange and a depending reduced portion formed with a recess, a dog pivoted in the recess, a spring for normally projecting the upper end of the dog to cooperate with the flange to hold the lock in locking position, a rod pivotally connected to the upper end of the dog and mounted to reciprocate in an opening formed in the casing, said rod having teeth on one edge, and a key having teeth near one end to engage the teeth on the rod to withdraw the dog in the recess to unlocked position.

An automobile lock comprising a casing having a top overlapping flange and a reduced depending portion formed on one edge with a recess, a dog mounted in the casing to be projected beyond the edge of said casing when in locking position. which with the recess and overlapping flange prevents the removal of the look when fitted to the control lever oft an automobile, and a 163; for withdrawing the dog to remove the 4.
