MARY CIERPIEN, OF CHICOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed July 6, 1917. Serial No'. 179,025;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY CIERPIEN, a citizen of Austria, resident of Chicopee, county of Hampden, and State of Mass, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in brushes, and particularly to types used in a moistened condition.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby the bristles of a brush may be maintained in a moistened condition, without the necessity of dipping the same in a liquid.
Another object is to provide a brush in which the liquids are conveyed to the bristies direct, under control of the user.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a brush made in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away in order to show the construction.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the liquid dispensing head.
Fig. i is a side elevational view showing a modification of brush construction.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 66 of Fig. 5.
In the form of brush shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a holder or backing plate 10 has projecting at its lower side a plurality of bristle elements 11, while from the upper side of the plate extends a stem or handle 12 by means of which the brush may be manipulated.
Also attached upon the upper surface of the brush 10, by rigid clips 14, is a tube 15, extending downward from a reservoir 16, provided with a flexible compressible top or cover 17, having an actuating knob 18, by means of which the cover may be depressed, thereby forcing out the contents of the reservoir 16 in such quantity as may be desired, the quantity being controlled by the operation of the valve 20, the tube leading ultimately downward through the backing 10 to a header 22, in which are provided a plurality of fine openings 23, so that thecontents of the reservoir 16 are relatively uniformly disposed throughout the bristles 11.
In the adaptation shown in Figs. t and 6 inclusive, a header 22, of thesame description-is supplied through a pipe 23'communieating with a flexible reservoir 25, as a rubher bag, contained within hollow elements 26 and 27 forming the brush handle, the abutting surface of the hollow elements being extended into flanges 28 and 29, in the latter of which is formed an arcuate groove 30, concentric with the exterior, and which is adapted to receive a pin 32, rigidly set in the upper flange 28, the groove limiting the movement of the pin, so as to prevent a complete revolution between the elements 26 and 27, the flanges being held in proper relation by means of a band 33, having inturned flanged surfaces 34:, holding the parts of the sectional handle in close relation.
A filling nozzle 35 is provided for the reservoir 25 the same extending out through an opening in the handle 26 and fitted with a tight cap 36, which can be removed when it is desired to renew the contents of the reservoir 25, from the lower end of which the tube 23 extends to the header.
Secured to the ends of the reservoir 25 are eyes 37, secured by flanges 38 in such manner as to avoid the leaking of the reservoir, and through which pass pins 4.0 and 41, respectively above and below the reservoir, the pins engaging rigidly in the tubular elements 26 and 27, so that as one is turned with relation to the other, the reservoir 25 is given a twist, forcing the liquid downwardthrough the tube 23 into the header 22 in an obvious manner, and it is to be noticed that the effect of the pin 32, with relation to the groove 30, is to limit the movement, thereby preventing an undue stress upon the flexible reservoir 25.
In operating a brush made in accordance with the adaptation, the reservoir 25 having been filled, the brush may be operated in the ordinary manner. When it is desired to compress the reservoir, so as to cause a flow of the liquid contained therein, the upper portion of the handle is turned relatively to the lower portion thereby twisting or wringing the reservoir, forcing the liquid out and into the header 22 in an obvious manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
In a brush of the character described, the combination of a backing and brush material disposed at one side thereof, and a hollow sectional handle on the opposite side of said backing, abutting flanges at the meeting ends of the sections forming said handle, one of said flanges having an arcuate groove, a pin in the other flange adapted to enter said groove, a band having inturned flanges for holding the flanges in proper relation, a flexible container disposed within said hollow handle, a filling nozzle provided with a cap at the upper end of said container, and a liquid distributing nozzle below said backing within the brush material, a pipe connecting the lower end of said container with said nozzle, eyes secured to the opposite ends of said container, and pins passed through said eyes and engaged in the upper and lower sections respectively, for giving the flexible container a twist upon the turning of the sections one with relation to the other, the ends 01 the groove in one of the flanges limiting the movement of the pin in the other flange for preventing undue stress upon the flexible container, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my 30 signature.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
