To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ERIC W. BAsooM, a citizen of the United States, residin at Alstead, in the county of Cheshire and tate of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stanchions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cow stanchions and has for its object the production of a simple and eflicient stanchion which may be used for the purpose of securing or tying an 1iinimal in a desired position within a sta Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and eiiicient means for facilitating the locking of the stanchion, and at the same time preventing the stanchion from becoming accidentally opened by the animal.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stanchion.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the locking means for the stanchion, one of the side rails being removed from the lockin means.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a portion of the stanchion showing the locking means carried thereby.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that 1 designates the stanchion which is provided with a securing chain 2 at each end thereof.
The stanchion frame 1 comprises an upper section 14 and a lower section 15. These upper and lower sections 14 and 15 are connected by means of an adjustable siderail 16, the side rail 16 being firmly secured betweenv the side plates 17 of the respective upper and lower sections 14 and 15. The side plates 17 of the upper and lower sections 14 and 15 are firmly connected to- 'ether and held against spreading relation by means of the transversely extending bolts 18. A suitable filler block 19 is interposed between the inner ends of the side plate 17 as shown is Fig. 5 and the chains 2 are secured to these filler blocks 19 by means of suitable eye-bolts 20 shown in Fig. 5.
The side plates of the upper frame 4 are provided with projecting fingers 21 these fingers 21 constituting a guide for the springing upper end of the locking bar 22 of the stanchion. This locking bar 22 is adjustably secured to the lower frame 15 by means of a suitable bolt 23 extending through one of the adjusting apertures 24. By considering Fig. 1 itwill be seen that the locking bar 22 may be adjusted upon the stanchion to suit the different sizes of cattle upon which the stanchion is used. The upper end of the locking bar 22 is provided with a reinforcing substantially V- shaped plate 25, this plate 25 being secured, over the upper ends of the locking bar by means of suitable screws 26, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
A pair of filler blocks 27 are interposed between the outer ends of the plates 17 of the'upper sections 14 and these filler blocks are similarlv constructed and are provided with inwardly extending web portions 28, these web portions 28 fitting between the side plates 17 as shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawing. Each filler block 27 is also provided with a pair of laterally extending flanges 29, these flanges 29 overhanging the side plates 17 and constituting a support for thediller block 27 and holding the same against accidental displacement. The lower and upper blocks 27 are pivoted by means of pivotally extending bolts '30. as shown in Fig. 4. The upper filler blocks 27v are provided with a longitudinally extending notch 31 formed upon the upper face thereof, within which notch 31 fits a securing spring 32. This securing spring 32 is also held in engagement with the upper filler block 27 by means of its securing bolt 33. The spring 32 is provided with an enlarged latch head 34, this latch head 34 being adapted to overhang the upper end of the locking bar 22 for the purpose of firmly holding the locking bar in a closed position. As shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing. the lower filler block 27 terminates short of the outer end of the upper block 27, the outer end of the upper block 27 being beveled as indicated by the numeral 35 for the purpose f conforming to the inclined upper end or edge of the locking bar 22. These filler blocks 27 not only constitute a means for spacing the side plates 17 but also constitute an abutment for the upper end of the locking bar From the foregoing it will be seen that the locking bar 22 may be readily and automatically locked in a closed position as soon as the same is swung into engagement With the abutment block 27. T he latch 32 will au tomatically engage the upper end of the looking bar 22 andfirmly hold the same in a closed position until this locking bar is released by means of an operator throwing the latching spring plate out of engagement With the locking bar 22. It should be further understood that the Projecting end 21. of the upper frame 14 will constitute an efficient means for guiding the locking bar 22 in engagement with the filler blocks 27.
It of course, should be understood that detail mechanical changes may be made in the present device Without departing from the spirit of the invention so long as these changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
As shown in Fig. 1 the projecting end 21 carries a transversely extending bolt 21 for limiting the outward swing of the locking upper frame comprising a pair of side plates, said flanges overhanging the upper and lower edges of said plates for assisting in holding said filler block in engagement with said plates, means for connecting said plates together, a spring latch secured to one of said filler blocks, and provided with a latching end adapted to overhang the outer end of said locking bar tor-holding said locking bar in a closed position.

A stanchion of the class described comprising a frame, a pivoted locking bar, said frame comprising an upper section, a plurality of filler blocks carried by said upper section, said filler blocks adapted to con stitute an abutment for the upper end of said locking bar, each filler block provided with laterally extending flanges, said upper :t'rame comprising a pair of said plates, said flanges overhanging the upper and lower edges of said plates for assisting in holding said filler block in engagement with said plates, means for connecting said plates together, a spring-latch secured to one of said filler blocks, one of said side plates provided with a projecting finger constituting a guide for directing the upper end of said locking bar in engagement with said memher.
