IMPROVEMENT IN BED=B OTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,438, dated June 25, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW TURNBULL, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in
Figure 1, a top view of a full piece; Fig. 2 a top view of a half piece as they come from the flask; and in Fig. 3, the manner of uniting the parts to form the bedbottom.
Thisinvention relates to an improvement in the construction of the bed-bottom for which Letters Patent were granted to ltudolphus L. Webb and myself, hearing date April 9, 187 2.
In that patent the bed-bottom was formed by links extending from one ring to another, and were made from wire. The object of this invention is to reduce the cost by combining one set or four links and their rings in one and the same piece from cast metal; and it consists in combining the links of one section in one and the same piece with the rings or hooks which serve to connect the several sections, as more fully hereinafter described.
The four sides A form a single section, and these sides may be in any desired relative po sition to each other-by preference, that of a diamond form, as seen in Fig. 1. Upon opposite ends a hook, B, is formed, and upon one side a similar hook, C. In this form the section is molded and cast of a malleable material, or made malleable after casting, so that the hooks may be turned one-fourth over-that is, turned down-as denoted in Fig. 3. These sections are then attached together, the hook at one end intersecting a corresponding hook upon the end of the next section, and the hook on the side taking the hook of the next section, as seen in Fig. 3. For the edges I prefer to make a triangular link, as seen in Fig. 2, unitin g with the other sections in the manner described, and as seen in Fig. 3.
It is not essential that a hook be formed upon each end, as the hook of one end maytake into the end of the next section in like manner, as described for the side; also, if preferred, a hook may be formed upon each side, instead of one side, as described.
By this construction I am enabled to greatly reduce thecost of the bed in material, but to a greater extent in labor.
I claim as my invention- The sections or links for a bed-bottom, as described, formed from cast metal and each provided with means for attachment to the adjoining sections, in the manner specified.
ANDREW TURNBULL.
